Solid vegan option - Edit
The food is really good, and clearly marked vegan options which can be hard to find in this area at times. The juices are pricey and a little small, but the food portions are large and very filling. The salad toppings are really flavorful too (carrot salad, beet salad, pickles etc). They are great at the local farmers market and just takeout from the store. They also have INCREDIBLE baba ganoush.
Read moreI do wish they were a bit healthier. It’s a bummer when ordering online that you *must* choose a protein, and none of the options are healthy for vegans (2 types of deep fried falafel, and one tofu that isn’t grilled). I would be thankful for an option for no protein and extra greens, lentils, or something like baked chickpeas.

every city should host a Yalla Hummus Café - Edit
Like several hummus cafés in Manhattan, this one is owned by an Israeli émigré who observes Kosher dietary laws. But unlike those in Manhattan that serve dairy but no meat, Yalla serves meat but no dairy. Good for vegans who need not be concerned about yogurt in sauces! For its compulsory Protein category, Yalla lists four different meats, including steak (organically-groAn!), while for us vegheads it lists only falafel or tofu. As I shun fried foods, I tried the tofu, which was really pasta sauce with some tofu in it. My friend is less nutritionally strident than I, so he ordered falafel, and he enjoyed it.
Read moreA café with the word Hummus embedded in its name leads me to expect an exceptionally good hummus. The two flavors I tried both disappointed me, tasting no better than most commercial hummus, organic or not. (My friend, however, liked the hummus.) My two flavors both tasted too garlicy and too salty for my tender palette. But two big pluses are the brown rice and whole wheat pita.
For a surcharge, baba ghanoush can be served as a scant topping that gets lost amid the rest of the dish. Call me a connoisseur of Baba Ghanoush. I took home a pint container, packed into a cooler with ice. It had generous chunks of eggplant, but only a faint eggplant taste because not roasted enough. And it, too, tasted too garlicy and too salty, and was fizzy from being spoiled. The hummuses and BG all could be improved with a larger dose of tahini, but organic tahini is expensive.
For all organic, Yalla is not expensive. But the portions are small, so if you want a full meal you really need to order two plates or two bowls, not just one. That’s still inexpensive. The mix-and-match menu can be intimidating when you try to decipher it for your first time while standing at the counter, so you’re better off first looking it over online.
With only two snack tables and four barstools at a narrow bar, forget about eat-in. The staff at the counter are very friendly and accommodating, so they compensate for the lack of waiter service. Be aware that its credit card app does not enable tipping, so be sure to bring some cash for the tip jar for the very deserving staff.
Since visiting here, I have purchased their hummus and BG and beet salad in two stores local to me in SE CT. Same complaint: too salty and too garlicky. Worse, their list of ingredients is incomplete, as neither salt nor garlic is mentioned. Negligent if not outright illegal. And what else are they not listing?
Pros: inexpensive for organic, the mix-and-match variety is a novel concept to me
Cons: the hummus needs improvement, products sold off-site list incomplete ingredients, organically-groAn steak
