vegan-friendly - Edit
This place is pretty typical for a smallish Whole Foods supermarket and has a wide variety of vegan items for sale. There are plenty of vegan frozen foods (e.g., Amy's Vegetable Korma), vegan cheeses, yogurt, milks and margarine as well as fresh organic fruits and vegetables. They also have vegan soaps, toothpastes, beauty products, condoms and supplements (along with non-vegan options). Like most other Whole Foods, they have large (& smelly) cow-cheese and butcher sections, but these are pretty easy to avoid.
Read moreThis particular Whole Foods has a small vegan baked goods section (with moo-cluck vegan chocolate chip cookie dough and some vegan and raw-vegan desserts from Cafe Indigo). They occasionally have Whole Foods fresh vegan baked goods such as scones, apple pie or pumpkin pie, but that's irregular. They have a very limited selection of vegan ice creams.
Compared to other major, local grocery chains (Shaws/Star Market, Price Chopper, Market Basket, Foodmaster), they have an excellent variety of vegan processed foods, superior vegetables and clearly labeled vegan items in the "to-go" salad bar. Compared to other local Whole Foods (e.g., the three in Cambridge), they have fewer vegan options (especially in terms of ice cream). Prices are typical for Whole Foods (a little higher than most supermarkets).
This location is great if you're in Medford (as I am), but is not easily accessible by T (it's 2 miles or so from nearest subway in Davis Square).
Rating-wise, I'd give this a 3 compared to other local Whole Foods, but it really is a 4 compared to other grocery stores (especially anything else in Medford or Somerville). Also, the staff are very friendly.
Pros: salad bar with vegan options & soups, tons of vegan specialty foods, quality fruits, vegetables & organics
Cons: fewer vegan items than other Whole Foods, large raw meat and smelly cheese areas
