As vegans traveling through Japan, we were looking for good quality traditional Japanese sweets like daifukus and dorayakis but without any animal products inside and we found Wa no Kashi Meguri in a tourist brochure in Tokyo.
And it was a delight ! The sweets were vegan, gluten free, made with the best fresh natural ingredients and no chemical additives whatsoever. The sweetness only came from agave syrup which has a low glycemic index.
The tastes were very delicate. The textures were perfect !
The owner gave us a lot of explanations concerning the ingredients of the pastries, how they were made, the differences of tastesbetween them. It was really interesting !
We had a nice mulberry tea with the pastries. We loved that the place was not too big and it felt very cosy. We found this residential neighborhood very peaceful, yet easily accessible by train from the center of Tokyo (a couple of stations from the Yoyogi park).
It is definitely a place where we will go again on our next trip to Japan !
Authentic and friendly, this small shop offers sweets that are not so sweet, offering a more savory version of some classic Japanese treats like kuromame daifuku and dorayaki. Not quite my taste, but a nice experience for those looking for organic and unique food with friendly service. Although they did accidentally charge me for an item I didn’t buy.
