Amazing carrot dogs! - Edit
When I got to La Paz and my colleagues learned that I'm vegan, the first thing one of them said was: "I could never go vegan, I love hot dogs too much". So when I heard about this place, I knew what to do... And Veggie Jates didn't let me down. After two months and a half in Baja California, I finally got to taste the typical hot dogs everyone raves about but I couldn't get. I loved them, and my could-never-go-vegan Paseño friend approved them wholeheartedly too. The carrot, coconut bacon, avocado, and other dressings are just perfect, and I was pleasantly surprised by the tamarind water served there. It's way worth the walk from Malecón and the limited opening hours. We'll be back to try hamburgers and burros. It's a must for vegans in La Paz!

Dining at Veggie Jates was nothing short of magical! The sun had just set and we were driving through a quiet resident neighborhood thinking we must be lost- no commerce in the area. But Google Maps had done its job and we looked over to see a couple strings of lights and a simple sign. In the back yard, on a residential lot were a few tables with picnic tablecloths and candles and a small food cart with a grill and a cook. This is a very small operation owned by two single moms, one of whom served us. She was phenomenal and very passionate about her recipes which she described going to great lengths to perfect... and perfect they are! The menu was only a couple of items so we ordered them both- Jates (hotdogs that are regionally specific to La Paz, our server explained) made vegan using an outstanding (clearly perfected) marinated carrot recipe instead of meat and fully loaded with homemade condiments that were better than any I’ve ever tasted and sprinkled with coconut bacon. They were insanely good! Easily the best hotdog I’ve ever had! We then ordered the enormous burrito to share and words cannot describe how delicious and delectable this thing was! It’s also a regionally specific (Baja) type of burrito, more flattened than the burritos I’m used to and grilled after being filled. The filling... I honestly don’t know all the ingredients but there was definitely hibiscus marinated and with a sort of carne asada preparation. Really impossible to describe... a bit like jack fruit but way better texture and taste. It also had incredible condiments. Everything had plenty of sauce! This burrito is the best thing I’ve ever eaten and it’s not an exaggeration! I was begging this woman to write a cookbook as I ordered another one to go! I’ve been craving that meal ever since! It’s only open from 7-11pm on Fridays and Saturdays... these women have day jobs and kids. Go on Friday so you can go again on Saturday because you’ll surely want to! I wish I had! It’s worth a trip from surrounding areas like Todos Santos or even Los Cabos if you’re not staying in La Paz... come to La Paz for the day... there’s excellent coffee all over the place, drive up to Balandra for the afternoon and then come here for dinner. You will not regret it! This is truly world-class vegan cuisine in the most humble, unassuming environment. This food could stand up next to that of world renowned chefs! And I’m picky and live in a the vegan oasis that is the SF Bay Area! Come one, come all!!
