A pleasant time

We recently visited "Under the Bodhi Tree" restraunt in the search of a Vegan meal to take home for dinner. The facility exhibits a minimalist approach to furnishings that is both clean and friendly. With congenial, knowledgeable staff, and menu clearly indicating the Vegan options, placing our order was easy.

We selected 3 menu options, an avocado toast with side salad, "The Taureg" entree, and "The Temple" entree. Our selections gave us a nice contrast of flavors between bitter and sweet. In my experience, "The Taureg" was like a hearty pumpkin/potato based stew over a bed of brown rice, garnished with roasted peanuts, I enjoyed the way the slight sweet tones of the pumpkin played with the potatoes and peanuts.

For those who enjoy the taste sensation of bitterness, much like we enjoy coffee and dark chocolate, you should sample "The Temple". The Temple" was flavored with sesame tahini with a background taste of 5 spice, over a bed of rice.

For me, the avocado toast was more of a light snack or appetizer to be enjoyed on a short respite with tea or coffee.
Our overall experience was warm and we look forward to our next visit to "Under the Bodhi Tree."

Pros: Friendly, Clean, Warm

Cons: Speak no evil into this world, no "cons"

Everything on the menu is great!

Travelling vegans! This place is a must frequent if you are fortunate enough to to find yourself on Big Island. I came back numerous times to try different dishes.

Pros: Lots of vegan options

Love Their Breakfast

Under the Bodhi Tree has AMAZING food and drinks. The restaurant is very welcoming, and there is indoor and outdoor seating. My favorite dish there is the breakfast wrap, although I have not tried their lunch menu. The food can be changed to what you like, and most meals are vegan. If the food is not vegan, it can mostly be changed to being vegan.

Pros: Most food is vegan, Refreshing drinks, Many options

Cons: Expensive, Service is a little slow, Not much indoor seating

Not bad! Worth the visit. Pretty expensive, but lots of food choices. Smoothies are good but small for pricing! Basic flavours choices.

Best food near many resorts

If you're staying in one of the many resorts nearby, Under the Bodhi Tree is a lifesaver. The outdoor seating area is nice with many trees for shade (there are indoor tables too, but who wants to eat inside on the leeward side of Hawai'i?). But it's also a great location to quickly grab some breakfast to go. They had no problem putting baked goods, soup, coffee, and kombucha in my own containers, making it a great option for waste-free food to-go. I had many breakfasts from here and enjoyed each one.

Plant based, fresh, local deliciousness!

Great vibe here! The food is FRESH! House made cashew cheese, lots of plant based, fresh, local ingredients. An extensive selection, good portions, decently priced. A place you will want to return to again and again. The staff is so friendly, the atmosphere is very sweet and casual.

Pros: Great selection of options , House made vegan cheese & burgers , FRESH, local ingredients. Sustainable!

Cons: No bathroom might be a con, Limited seating

Food is good, service needs improvement

Very disengaged staff, includes the owner who just seems a little stressed (both times I was there).
Food is good, yummy vegan options.

Pretty good

Our family was very excited to find a vegetarian restaurant in this area. Nice atmosphere, and any dish can be made vegan - so many options! Everything was healthy and fresh, but we weren't blown away by the flavors of anything we got (Reuben, salads, avocado toast, desserts), except the Aloha Dog which was yummy. The vegan baked goods were kind of dry and definitely wouldn't fool a non-vegan. I would certainly go again and try some of the other items. *Note, be very clear about indicating if you want a vegetarian menu item to be made vegan: my sister ordered the Reuben vegan but they still put real cheese on it, and had to remake, which took awhile.

Pros: Many options, Healthy

Cons: Pricey, Not the most flavorful

Perfect breakfast

This place is located in a shopping mall and offers a lot of vegan options. The breakfast wrap was light (full of veggies) and the fruit was fresh and delicious. I made a custom juice (spinach, celery, cucumber, orange) and it was a perfect pairing.

Not be missed

Found this on HappyCow app. We were traveling thru the area and were so pleasantly surprised to find this place. We are new WFPB and it hit every mark. In a shopping center. Small place with some outside seating. We had falafel club and Nakhon Noodles Bochum was a green curry with tons of flavor. Too bad we are staying in Kona or would be back.

Pros: Vegan

Cons: Small order at counter

A gem

This is our sixth day of trying vegan restaurants on the Big Island, and this was my favorite meal. We had the Falafel Club and the Tropical Collusion salad. Both were extremely fresh and tasty, with generous portions. Lots of great choices on this menu, it was hard to narrow it down to two!

great since there are few choices in the area

Very excited to find a vegetarian place near our hotel in Waikoloa. Lots of menu choices that sounded good, both vegetarian and vegan. Food was tasty though my ramen bowl was too spicy, which I wasn't expecting. My husband's blt was very good. I tried it and the cashew cheese and coconut bacon were delicious. I like that they use whole grain bread items. Sadly my husband ended up not happy with the place because they charged $3 for a refill of plain $4 iced tea, and he felt price gouged at that point. They do close early, and turned the closed sign over before 7, when they close. I'd come again because there aren't many choices in the area, but there are some things they should improve on.

NOT gluten-free, NOT okay to advertise as such

Only 1 person in our group of 6 people liked their food.
More importantly, my daughter is a celiac, meaning that she has an auto-immune disease toward gluten. Almost every item on their menu is listed as gluten free, but she still had a severe reaction to her meal. One of the most severe reactions in a long time. We called and spoke with the manager only to warn them that there might have been some contamination and to watch out for anyone else specifically requesting a gluten free meal. The manager was entirely unapologetic and disinterested. They said that we should have informed them of her disease. She specifically requested a gluten free meal. Most restaurants offering gluten free options prepare those options separately, just like if someone had a peanut allergy or any other serious allergy. She does not normally go around broadcasting her disease to restaurants and almost never has reactions.

good option for the area

The only veggie restaurant in the vicinity. They do use eggs in some items unfortunately so that’s a 1 Star penalty in my book. And the hours are limited— staff likes to close kitchen at 645pm and couldn’t be bothered to accommodate late comers. The food is decent, a tad pricey, and a tad on the bland side. Lots of vegan and veggie options, be certain to ask if you have specific restrictions like eggs or gluten.

Pros: location , fresh ingredients

Cons: pricey, closes early

Great lunch spot

We were driving down from Hawi and stopped here for lunch. Ordered one of the bowls which was delicious and filling. There were plenty of vegan options but some items that were vegetarian seemed that they could have been vegan.
Nice atmosphere. Plenty of parking and seats.

Good food if you're nearby

It's fantastic to have this place in its location. If you're at the beaches or resorts on this part of the Big Island, you must stop by. It may not be worth a long drive (based upon our one meal which was fine but not lifechanging).

The Reuben was delicious but the tofu could use more texture to have it stand up to the rest of the sandwich. But the sauces on it were delicious.

The noodle bowl was a simple and a bit bland - but healthy and tasty nonetheless.

Nice outdoor and indoor seating and lots of amenities at their restaurant. And fantastic to have the owner right there.

The banana cream "ice cream" was fine but can't hold a candle to Banan in Honolulu.

Pros: Solid food
