very calm, peaceful place - Edit
Indeed a little tricky to find (look up).

The food is really tasteful - for 1000 yen you’ll get a lunch plate with a cup of tea.

Closed - Edit
Visited the cafe on 1/2/2018 and it was completely closed down. I could see inside the door and the furniture was all stored away and the decor removed.

calm space in shibuya - Edit
Very nice refuge if you need to get away from the masses in shibuya. The portions are not very big and quite pricey - we each had the soy nugget plate for dinner (1400 yen) and we were still hungry afterwards.

EXCELLENT - Edit
It was destiny that my friends & I came upon this spot last night, because today is their last day! I wish they did a better job promoting & advertising the spot, it has the potential to pop, but its not something you would randomly find without word of mouth. Super clean, minimalistic, good vibes, chill atmosphere! If I knew about this earlier I would come once a week easy! Veganism is abit slow in catching on in tokyo the lady said, & I totally agree. I hope you get a chance to step in for lunch today if youre in the area! Hopefully they will reopen in another location easier to stumble upon! Props Nylon 😋 lol*

Sooo good - Edit
Clean and neat restaurant up on the 5th floor of the building on the left before you get to outback steakhouse (if walking from the station). They don't speak English and are super nice and try really hard to communicate. Menu has some English on it. I had the Mexican salad which is a meal by itself plus the soy nugget plate. Sooo good! First satisfying dinner since arriving in Tokyo 3 days ago!!

Cute little find! - Edit
Finding the entrance to Umi Cafe was tricky at first - you have to walk around the corner as opposed where it shows you on the map.

Yummy! - Edit
Super cute café, we had to walk around the block to find the entrance. Nice interior and the food was delicious and filling, there was not a lot of choice but we had the soy nuggets and the "hamburger" which was more like a big meatball. 1000¥ for lunch including one tea.

Hard to find, but went back a second time - Edit
From the map, I thought it would be visible from the mains street. It wasn't. You got to turn down the small street, and turn right again, and it's around back.
Read moreI'm glad I persevered though. I got the croquette (because I had no idea what a croquette was and assumed it was one of those non-vegan things I wouldn't see very often in my life), and it came out looking like rectangular fried nuggets. I was a little scared I'd ordered the wrong thing, but they had confirmed what I was getting.
Well, when I picked them up, they were denser and softer than nuggets. Also, delicious! The lunch plate was a good size. And also comes with tea (or a drink, but I'm pretty sure it's tea).
The second time I went for dinner and got the taco plate (having seen it on a menu somewhere else, too) and the waffle dessert. The taco plate is essentially a burrito bowl. Tasty, but not particularly interesting (having previously lived in Mission, SF).
I don't know if their hours stabilized or what, but they were open both times I went (around 2pm and 9pm). The hours on the menu, though, list lunch from 7am to 3pm and dinner from 5pm to 10pm.
I wasn't really sure how to get the waitress's attention, but it sorta worked out. The thing I'd note is like most Japanese restaurants, you go up front to pay.

We went on our first day in Tokyo and had two lovely plates of food. I had the nuggets and my partner had the burger. Both came on a beautifully presented plate of food and were piping hot. Good service. Tried to go again but they were shut :(

OK - Edit
There are a few vegan options in Shibuya, so this cafe is precious.

One of the most surprising restaurants of our trip (in a negative way)" - Edit
First problem: we had to wait 10-15 minutes (literally) for a waitress to come to our table. I've never experienced that in years. That was very weird, as the restaurant was completely empty (no customer).
Read moreSecond problem: the two waitresses didn't speak English. Ok, so we're in Japan. That's not unexpected. They finally called the cook, who happened to speak English. Later, when we had the same communication problem, for some strange reason, they decided not to call the cook...
Several times during our meal, we had to wait a very long time to talk to a waitress.
Finally, the food was very simple. Too simple. The value for money was bad.
All in all, a very weird experience. Was the staff new?

Opening hours listed incorrect/unreliable - Edit
Can't tell by the given opening times whether it's AM or PM. I went there at 11:30am on Thursday and 3pm Saturday wasn't open either time. No indication on-site of opening times either.

Disclaimer: review is not based on food as I haven't actually been able to try it yet. I wish Happy Cow had a better way of leaving a comment without necessarily having to give a star rating, but unfortunately it doesn't.
Read moreI've tried going here on 4 separate occasions and have yet to find it open even though the hours listed indicated it should have been.
They should definitely clarify their hours and update their Facebook page with more relevant information.

probably the best meal we had in Tokyo - Edit
This is a wonderful place. It has a relaxed vibe despite being close to the whirlwind of Shibuya, and our waiter was very friendly and helpful.
Read moreWe both ordered the dinner plate option, which I'd heartily recommend - you get a plate piled with fresh salad, scrambled tofu, dressed mushrooms , rice and a choice of soya burger, soya nuggets or croquettes (korroge).
I had the burger which was about the tastiest I've ever had, and my other half raved about the croquettes. The mushrooms were possibly the star of the show, though everything was well flavoured.
Despite being full from the main we'd spotted waffles on the dessert menu so had to order them. Fluffy and crispy with ice cream, Maple syrup and fruit - absolutely perfect.
This was probably the best meal we had in Tokyo.
Pros: Amazing food, lovely service, good options, nice a

Very Hard to Find Worth it - Edit
!!!BEWARE!!!
Read moreI had SUCH a hard time finding this place, do NOT use the "Directions" button otherwise you will end up at Zara. It is a few blocks from there right next to Ikinari! Steak Shibuya Center-gai, Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan which you can Google, but make sure it's the Center-gai location! Otherwise you can go to Umi Cafe's Facebook and make it there!
With that aside, since it's not their fault, everything else was good! We ended up too late for breakfast and had to wait for lunch, menu is strange Breakfast from 7-10 lunch from 11-3 dinner 4-10 and bar afterward I'll post pictures of the schedule. The menu is not in English but that's okay because they are very accommodating and will help you! Lunch sets were very cheap 1000 yen for a plate with a choice of protein and salad and other small dishes. The Koroge was amazing! The only problem was finding it!
Pros: Fully vegan, cheap, delicious
Cons: Hard to find!

delicious vegan food - Edit
We had trouble finding this restaurant - the map isn't quite right so I've put a couple of pics up to help. Lovely quiet space with beach theme - amazing fresh all vegan food that was carefully presented and well priced. English menu and English speaking staff - my husband and I both opted for mixed rice plates which had great salads and soy options for protein. Also had the avocado bruschetta which was divine. Really enjoyable quality experience in a great location away from the crazy streets outside. Highly recommended .
