Good food. Large portion - Edit
I really enjoyed eating here. I had a yummy lentil dish that had the perfect amount of spice to it. Eating with the injera was fun. Reminded me of a very soft sourdough. The lentils were seasoned nicely and cooked well. I loved the server she was very sweet and helpful with explaining how to properly eat with the injera.

One of my favorites as a local - Edit
I have been coming to Uchenna for many years, and for good reason. The food is delicious, gourmet drinks and desserts are divine! The ambience of the restaurant is lovely, and unique, very much like the owner and her story. The love that the owner pours into her food, the presentation, the personal touches, it hits all of the right spots for me. I have had other Ethiopian food, and this is very different as most of the entrées are lentil base, but that does not take away from the flavor and authenticity of the meal. Highly recommend!

Disappointing - Edit
The waiter was rude and made inappropriate jokes about having served us ground beef or about sneaking animal products into our food. We had to sit through a lecture on how the business wouldn’t be profitable if they didn’t also sell meat items.
Read moreThe food itself was less than stellar. The 100% teff injera is bitter and the vegetarian combo was not like the usual offerings at Ethiopian restaurants and the flavor profile was not enjoyable.

decent but not outstanding - Edit
This is a very pleasant little restaurant, tucked into a corner of a strip mall. Even on a roasting day it was very cool inside. The artwork is very good and the whole place has an inviting vibe. We dined early, so service was not a problem. Also, there are limited good veg options in this area, which makes Uchenna even more attractive.
Read moreThe food, however, was only so-so. The veggie platter was mostly lentil dishes, with very little vegetable. The dishes were also fairly dry. And finally, I'd say the portion was a bit on the smaller side.
By way of comparison, I've eaten numerous times at dozens of Ethiopian restaurants in several US cities. Of course, it's unfair to compare the options in a smaller Colorado city with those of cities with large Ethiopian populations like Washington, DC. And for all I know, this is a more "authentic" style of cooking. Either way, it didn't trigger a "gotta come back" feeling for me (though I'd certainly eat here again if I had to).
Pros: good veg options in an area without too many, very pleasant place
Cons: not much vegetable, somewhat dry, limited portions for price

Really good authentic food - Edit
I’ve been here a few times and the veg option doesn’t disappoint. I love the finger bread you use to eat with. Not many options on the menu in total and only a few for vegans though. The restaurant is kind of hidden and it was a bit hard to find the first time I went.

A different kind of Ethiopian - Edit
We've been to many Ethiopian restaurants and this place has unique flavors. The injira is all teff, which we like. The stews are a bit thinner in consistency than we're used to, so scooping it up is a little more challenging. Enjoyed the meal.

Patrons beware! - Edit
I had a very rude interaction with the host because I and my party of 3 didn't have a reservation to a nearly empty restaurant (wherein one "reserved" plaque adorned a single table). We ultimately left to find another restaurant for dinner. Don't waste your time attempting to eat here! In the words of a customer who was actually seated and eating, "there are plenty of other great restaurants here".

Disgusting. - Edit
I've never completely hated a meal out ever. It was very expensive and the wait was long, which I wouldn't mind if the food was actually edible. I had to hit up Chipotle afterwards. Idk if it was a bad day for them but I really couldn't finish it. The food tasted bland and the injera was sour but also bland. I would save my money and go elsewhere.

A Place for an Experience. - Edit
This restaurant is definitely worth visiting. The owner is very passionate about her food and enjoys checking up on her patrons as they taste her cooking. I tried the vegetarian sampler because I could not choose a single dish to commit to. I was so happy I chose this because I enjoyed every sample! I also was very appreciative of how knowledgeable the staff was about veganism as well as how friendly and caring they were. It was like I was walking into their living room, not a restaurant.

Sweet, little place,; needs some menu updating - Edit
Ethiopian is our favorite food. We were excited to find one in the Springs during our recent visit. The restaurant is cozy and inviting, and the staff is very friendly.
Read moreWe ordered the vegan platter for 2. The Injera bread was delicious however, the three options consisted of pureed lentis, two kinds and a kind of spiced sauce. Basically, it was like eating baby food. Where are the mushrooms, the beets, other great Ethiopian options that you can actually chew?
The seasonings were great, but I left feeling left than satiated. I hope they add more options.
On another note - the lighting does not coincide with their cozy, little restaurant. The lighting is fluorescent and very harsh. Little lamps on the table would be much more suited.
Pros: Cozy, Great staff, Delicious Injera, good seasonings
Cons: Needs more substanial dishes, Harsh lighting

Awesome! - Edit
The food here is great, and the owner is a gem as well. There is a very cozy feel to this small restaurant, and it is typically busy when I have gone there (twice now). Highly recommended, especially if you are vegetarian or vegan, as there are not a whole lot of places in the area that cater to veg/vegans. Highly suggested!

Lovely place, lovely owner - Edit
Maya is a truly beautiful human being, and each and every time I've been in her restaurant I've been welcomed in as if I was family. I've taken a few different people with me on trips down to The Springs and each one has raved about what a great experience they've had.
Read moreThe food is incredible - flavorful and spicy, they have a gluten-free injera option, and it's all made fresh to order. Last time we were there, my husband ordered the Ripe Tomato for an appetizer and wowza! I don't know what she does to the tomato, but it is so full of flavor.
The only thing you should know is that service can be a bit slow. Go in prepared to relax and enjoy your company. They are lightly staffed, but it is well worth the wait.
This place is a gem in Old Colorado City. Don't miss it!

My husband and I went for lunch yesterday, it's was so good, we didn't even leave a trace of food on the plates, the owner welcomed us with a sample of delicious rose water infused lemonade and orange tea, they were so good, make sure when u r there to get one of those. They have vegetarian and vegan options, they've got yummy dessert too! Loved it!

amazing experience! - Edit
Maya really made us feel welcomed to her restaurant as soon as we got there. She was very polite and warm. She gave us samples of her homemade drinks when we sat down, and she let us have a sample of one of the dishes we were thinking about ordering. The food was amazing. There are lots of vegetarian and vegan options, and her injera (teff pancake) is amazing. She even showed us the proper way to eat our dish with our hands. You can definitely tell she prepares her food with love and care. Overall, it was one of the best dining experiences I have ever had and will definitely be back to visit Maya and taste the wonderful food from her kitchen.

A real gem - Edit
We love this place. We always order the vegetarian platter. It is so satisfying and filling. I cannot say enough about how great this place is. Maya is a darling, she always smiles, caters to everyone and is a warm loving person. Our toddler son adores her.
