Great Vegan Options but..

Tofu bite appetizers, veggie dogs, tofu tacos or burritos, Beyond Burger tacos or burritos and vegan crab cakes - their veggie selection is awesome. First time i went, staff was ambivalent at best about my presence lol kind of had a customers optional vibe haha. The only thing tricky about Tricky Fish is getting service hehe. The good side of that it it was chill and i like that.

The food however wasn't that good : (
The tofu bites were buffalo tofu bites. That's ok but i wasn't expecting that and wouldn't have ordered them if i knew. The beans and rice lacked flavor of any sort.

Have been back a couple times now. The Beyond tacos were decent. Not blown away by the food here. But Charleston and West Virginia in general have such a paucity of vegan options i'm grateful this place is here.

We wouldn't recommend.

It's not a very nice atmosphere, they're understaffed which isn't their fault but not only was the service slow it was extremely poor and halfhearted. We repeated our order at least three times stating that we wanted the light life plant based hot dogs, and our server who seemed completely out of it still brought our vegan 3-year-old a meat-based hot dog that he took a bite of. We're incredibly upset by this and will absolutely not be back.

Pros: A few Vegan options

Cons: Overpriced, low quality, no concern for diet pref.

My go to for vegan patio food

I catch myself here at least once a week, it’s so good! They have many vegan options such as veggie dogs, tofu wings, beyond burgers, tofu tacos, vegan crab cake, and on occasion they have a tofu burger. I recommend the vegan cajun mayo with the wings or on a burger!

No Tricks from this Tricky Fish

Tricky Fish is not the place you would expect to eat as a vegan. But I thoroughly enjoyed their tacos (ask to be made vegan). They have two vegan/vegetarian options, tacos and a veggie dog. The staff person who waited on us was super nice. I absolutely loved the atmosphere, it felt as though we were on the waterfront even though there was no body of water to be seen. The restaurant walls were painted with fish and it was really cute. If you are driving though Charleston, West Virginia, this is a great place to stop and get lunch.

Pros: fun atmosphere, great staff, yummy tacos

Cons: only two options

Awesome atmosphere!

We landed at the Tricky Fish as North Carolinians meeting someone in West Virginia. The menu looked wacky enough to accommodate our small but wacky group. There were a couple of veggie options. I had the tofu tacos and they were okay and quite spicy, but I was able to cool off with a couple of beers.

Pros: Very decent prices. Super casual atmosphere. They

Cons: Not many veg options.

Yum!

Conveniently located off I77, we stopped at Tricky Fish for lunch on our way to Ohio. My husband and I had tofu soft tacos (sans dairy) with a side of chips and salsa. My children each had a veggie dog with side of chips. Everything was delicious! We were very happy with lunch and will definitely stop in again on our way home.

Pros: Nice outdoor patio, Friendly staff, Delicious food

Cons: Out of beans & rice and fajita veges

Hey I Got One!

Tricky Fish is a small restaurant located in Charleston, WV east side located in an urban area just a short walk from the beautiful Capitol building complex. The is no on street parking if you drive but there are spots in the back. The restaurant has a younger, eco vibe to it and has a small seating area and bar in the back which did have a WV micro on tap. The staff was very friendly and knowledgable about the menu. Nothing fishy so far.

The menu has two vegetarian dishes (veggie dog and tofu tacos) and several sides that are vegetarian and can be made vegan on request. I opted for two tofu tacos which came with a side for which I chose red beans and rice. Once again on travel, this time for the chemical spill in the Elk River, I delayed gastro gratification until I got back to the hotel.

I decided to try both a soft and hard taco which was no problema when I ordered. The soft taco tortilla was nicely grilled before stuffing with locally made tofu, iceberg lettuce, a little shredded cheese, and some crème fraîche. It was seasoned very nicely and the tofu was spot on. The hard taco was a typical yellow corn shell and filled similarly. I definitely prefer the soft taco. Next came the red beans and rice. Served in a compostable container, as is the green theme with for the utensils, napkins, etc. the dish was very good with enough of a cayenne kick to convert a napkin to a tissue. Well seasoned with a great balance of beans to rice and not a runny mess. Overall a very good meal, I just wish there were more options to choose from. Hopefully they will expand the vegetarian item on the menu. Nonetheless, I will stop in again given the opportunity as this place is all treat and no trick.

Pros: Great food, Nice staff, Fun atmosphere

Cons: Limited vegetarian cuisine
