Okay

My husband and I are vegan and have been to Watertree Cafe numerous times. I personally am not wowed by the food but we go and support local vegan restaurants. I did enjoy the vegan panini special I had last time. We are usually there 2-3 hours even if no one else is there so clear your schedule. I do give props to the owner who is the only cook and server. Best way I can describe it is that it's like having a group of people come to your home and you cook each person a completely different meal. Obviously that takes time.

VERY Slow Service, but Delicious Food

Pay very, very close attention to all of the reviews (including mine) that discuss the incredibly long wait times at The Water Tree Cafe. Apparently this is how this business operates all the time, and isn't seasonal, etc.

The cafe is small, but welcoming. There is only one employee, the owner. I learned after we arrived and had been there awhile that she clears the tables, takes the orders, and cooks all food to order. They do have a dine-in business as well as a takeout business.

As a result, some of the tables may be messy when you arrive and you may have a long wait to have her take your order and/or refill drinks.

We ended up being at the cafe for over two hours by the time everything was said and done. It took more than 90 minutes for any food to come out, and none of our drinks were refilled during that 90 minutes. Had I known that this wait times would be so long, I wouldn't have ordered an appetizer.

The owner did not communicate how long things would take, and didn't check in with us often. I think that our expectations could have been much better managed with upfront communication from her.

I perceived that our wait times were even longer because some takeout orders came in after we arrived and while we were there. The people who came in to order takeout in-person were served their food before we were.

We arrived at 2:00 p.m. and were told that none of the quiches were available, which I thought was odd since the cafe opens at 12 Noon.

I am vegan, so I was happy to see that there were so many options for me. I was visiting the cafe with two people who are omnivores, so it was nice that there were options that they were happy with, too.

All three of us commented that the food was delicious. The owner clearly is an excellent chef and uses good, fresh ingredients in her dishes. The food gets five stars. The slow service and lack of communication is significant enough to bring my review down to three stars.

My main constructive feedback would be that I definitely think that hiring a second person would be so useful. They could take orders, clear the tables, and make sure that drinks are topped off, leaving the owner/chef available to focus on what she does best: cook delicious food. This would allow her to turn over tables more quickly and should certainly shorten down the time it takes for food preparation.

Ok vegan friendly restaurant!

It was nice to find a vegan friendly restaurant while on vacation at Myrtle Beach. Being a vegan, I can say it can be hard to find places to eat at when you are out and about. I appreciated all of the vegan options on their menu. It took me a while to choose because I wasn’t used to having that many options to choose from. I have a family of 6 and we all ordered bobo teas. I’ve had some phenomenal vegan bobo teas before but these were just ok. I ordered the vegan burger and vegan cheese fries. The fries were delicious with the chipotle ranch dipping sauce. The burger was ok. I am not a fan of the light life burger although I know it is probably one of the cleaner processed vegan meats out there. Definitely be prepared to wait a while for your food. There is one chef and everything is cooked to order. We waited about 10 minutes for our drinks and probably close to an hour for our food. I do appreciate that she sent the kids food out first as they were prepared. As long as our kids are squared away, I have a little more patience for my food. Overall, the experience was ok. It was the absolute best, but definitely a nice option for us vegans when you are in the Myrtle Beach area.

Pros: Lots of vegan options , Friendly service

Cons: Long wait

Tofu is too soft

Nice staff, but food was just ok. I order the tofu tacos, bbq tofu wrap, and a life light burger. I am very particular about my tofu. It was fried, but too soft in the middle and not seasoned. The burger was good.

Pros: A good amount of vegan options , Nice waitress

Cons: Not well seasoned , Soft tofu

Good Drinks

We visited Myrtle Beach, SC for our first post-pandemic vacation and after being fully vaxed, ready to try all the local vegan food during our 5 day trip! Looked around on Happy Cow and found the Water Tree Cafe with pretty rave reviews! Checked around to see the menu and I enjoyed that they had weekly specials that also include vegan items as well! Got us super excited to check it out!

The place is adorable, loved the vibe of it! Server was pretty nice, told us right away where we could find the vegan options and there was a TON!
We ended up ordering an appetizer of fried tofu and it was absolutely delicious! Loved the breading on it as well as the dipping sauce!

We also ordered the Vegan Hipster Burger(that was my partners) and I ordered the Vegan Cheeseburger Omelette and subbed the salad for the vegan mac! My partner said that the burger was good and I also enjoyed the flavors of mine!

I did have some issues with the food and overall service/timing of things, sadly. I’m not one to complain or talk about these things as I’ve worked in a restaurant myself and completely understand how things can get backed up and issues arise! But the most important thing a server or chef can do is to communicate with their customers, which that did not happen at all during our visit.

Our food took an hour and a half to reach us and there was only one other two-top table that ordered before us. One other walked in after us. Now there is only one chef, so, I get it but she was also talking constantly to another person there which I’m assuming was a friend and tbh that wasn’t a super big problem as it seems like she was still working while chatting but it gets frustrating when there is no communication after a long wait(the fried tofu didn’t hit our table till the hour and a half later btw) and all you hear is constant chatting instead of what should maybe be laser focus on getting this food out if it is going to take this long and/or communication to the customer. We finally got our main food at the two hour mark. And while it was good, it wasn’t so great that we’d come back and get stuck here for 2hrs😒

Our frustrations could’ve been alleviated by just some simple communication from them, which I hope they can work on. I’d visit again but just for the drinks alone as they were quite enjoyable and very quick since the server makes them!

Weekly Specials were delicious!

We enjoyed the weekly specials of "bang bang chicken bowl" and the "bang bang mango tacos". The chicken bowl was akin to chicken nuggets with rice and snow peas, but the sauce was the star, ask for extra ;)

The tacos came stuffed with cabbage, mango chunks. And a generous pile of fried tofu. Fir the side we elected for vegan mozzarella covered fries with a side of vegan Cajun aioli.

The margaritas were nice and strong and featured some unique flavors, Watermelon-Cucumber, and Prickly Pear!

Pros: Prices, Margaritas, Specials

Cons: Longer wait time

Sooo many options!

My (mostly non-vegan) family and I went to Water Tree Cafe for lunch. We enjoyed our service from the owner (?), who made it clear from the start-she was not a server, but she was hilarious, so she made up for it.
I got fried Mac and cheese balls (I think it was a special) omg- they were HUGE and delicious. Wish I took a picture of them.
I also go a bbq tofu wrap, which I was sadly kinda bummed about after the bomb mac balls. The tofu itself was lacking flavor. The rest of the wrap was just some chopped mango, lettuce and bbq sauce. It also came on a spinach wrap- I don’t believe that was stated on the menu & i would have preferred a regular tortilla.
Although it wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever tasted, I was far from impressed and wouldn’t recommend it.
Everyone else was pleased & I’ll be happy to come back next time we are in the area!

Pros: Friendly staff, Creative menu, Tons of veg options

Cons: kinda slow service, BBQ Wrap :/
