You pay for the experience

If you are looking for a place to celebrate a special occasion this is your best option on Maui, considering there aren't many. The location is beautiful and the staff puts a lot of effort into making you feel welcome. They are also well informed about vegan diets and even made extra bread for us. The food itself was ok, nothing mind blowing and too much oil for European standards. If it wasn't for everything around the food wouldn't warrant the price but for the entire experience it is fair.

3-course, fine dining

Fine dining at the top of hill. Service and atmosphere are great. Vegan options don’t yet merit the price.

We chose Wailea Hotel for our special night out because it offered a completely vegetarian version of its 3-course prix fixe dinner menu in an area where vegan options are hard to find. The menu is vegetarian and labels what is dairy free. It does not list what is egg free, so you’ll have to ask the server, who does know what contains eggs. It would be great if the kitchen simply labeled the egg free options.

While there are 4 vegetarian starters, just two are vegan and they were out of those of those, so we had just one choice, which is kind of annoying when you are paying $110 for 3-courses and reserve a table for two vegans. There are four mains, two are vegan. We enjoyed the panisse, a fried chickpea fritter of sorts, tasty and unique. The other option was grilled tofu over vegetables. The grill marks were impressive, but the tofu was not marinated and didn’t have any sauce on it, the type of dish that would make anybody wonder why you’re vegan. For dessert, there’s 5 vegetarian options, but only one is vegan, so we got sorbet.

Would I pay $110 for a tomato salad, grilled tofu and sorbet again? Nope. I was expecting a little more creativity for that price point. This is a much better spot for vegetarians than vegans. At the same time, I applaud the restaurant for offering a vegetarian prix fixe menu, and charging $20 less for the vegetarian version than for the non-veg version. I’m hopeful that for our next trip to Wailea they will have expanded vegan offerings and taste-tested the vegan options before adding them to the menu.

Amazing special meal

Chef and local is pretty amazing! We ate here for breakfast and dinner. Menu for breakfast was marked as vegetarian and dairy free while dinner was a vegetarian menu with dairy free marking and notes that you can make almost everything on it vegan.
Lovebirds flying around (as well as native birds). Excellent waitstaff.
For breakfast, the avocado toast and healthy start breakfast were both delicious.
For dinner, which is a fixed price (3 courses for 110), the tomato salad was fine but the Panisse and desert (mango puree in a white chocolate casing) were both outstanding.
Highly recommend but be forewarned it's definitely a fancy splurge dinner!

Fancy Vegan Dinner

I called ahead for our reservation and mentioned I was a vegan. They provided a full vegan menu with options I could choose from for either a 3 or 4-course dinner!
