Great vegan shakshuka!

I ordered the vegan shakshuka with cashew cheese and tofu, and it was filling and flavorful. Nice for a morning out in Rockford.

Healthy and Unique Vegan Options

We love The Norwegian! They rotate out their menu every week, which is super unique for a restaurant. They always include 3 vegan options, which are clearly labeled and delicious. They are usually on the lighter, healthier side which is awesome. Always so much flavor, always unique. Atmosphere is really cool. Great service and bartenders. They are always busy, so recommend making a reservation.

Pros: Unique, flavorful vegan options, Clearly labeled vegan options

Cons: Rotating weekly menu- check their Facebook page

Delicious food & a cool restaurant

The Norwegian is great! They always have several vegan options. Today I got their potato skillet, which was potatoes, tofu scramble, cauliflower gravy, and cashew cheese and my partner got the impossible handheld (impossible sausage, tofu scramble, and cashew cheese). Delicious!

Sooo cool

I wasn’t cool enough for this place. We sat at the bar and made small talk with the bartender. The ambience was great and the food was amazing.

Pros: Cool setting, Tastey food

Great decor, good food

Very cute decor. The environment aspect was great, the seating was comfortable, and there was plenty of space for two people. The plating was aesthetically pleasing. However, the water had a smell to it and tasted like low-quality tap water. I decided to order a drink instead.

The tofu egg on the impossible handheld was a bit bland. In my opinion, it needs more seasoning. The actual muffin bun was prepared nicely as well as the impossible meat. The sauce was pleasant, but could have been spread around a little better because it was too concentrated in one spot.

The mushroom melt sandwich was great and the fries were extremely delicious and big highlight. The rye bread was good quality and there was a nice balance of sauerkraut that blended well with the mushrooms and other ingredients.

The shakshuka was a good balance between spice and flavor and the bread served on the side complimented it well.

If this place was fully vegan, I would rate it four stars instead of three.

Delicious and thoughtful

Our family of two parents and two kids aged 4 and 6 were lucky enough to eat a late lunch at The Norwegian in July 2019. Although it was 1pm on a Tuesday, there was only one table available, so it was already clear that this place is already popular. The interior has an open, all-wood aesthetic with simple tables scattered around a central bar. The lighting delivers guests gently to their thoughtful place. A cozy little stage is set up for live music. The decor on the walls includes an exhibit of drawings clustered about one spot, musical instruments mounted near the stage, and a framed vintage poster advertising biking tours of Sweden near the bathrooms. Eclectic, but it works. And then there is the food. Our kids split a double-order of six traditional scandinavian pancakes (æbleskiver), served with syrup and raspberry jam. They loved it of course. One of us parents ordered the Norwegian Handheld - the bread authentic, the sandwich of scrambled egg and harvarti satisfying, and the side-salad refreshing. The other parent ordered the scrumptious Schrute Farms salad. The Lingonberry Spritzer was a fine drink. I had the “Tivoli Garden” drink. I couldn’t taste the cucumber or honey as the ginger beer was overpowering, but the presentation (in a copper mug) and the fresh mint leaves were still worthy of a summer afternoon. We were none of us full afterwards so we topped off with some of their scandinavian cookies. This very veg-friendly restaurant alone is enough for us to look for more excuses to visit Rockford.

Pros: authentic, carefully-prepared food, dedicated staff / ownership, beautiful lighting
