Tasty, interesting and beautifully presented dishes - Edit
Nice place for special occasions, it's a meal that takes some time and is well presented so feels special.
Read moreI was here a few years ago and now it's mainly vegan (previously most dishes had either eggs or diary) which is wonderful.
Some starters are delicious but I think best is to treat them like tapas and get a selection as I remember not liking one of the mains the last time. Also looking at other reviews people have mixed views on mains.
We got lots of starters and it worked very well, for example Thai salad was a great side dish but if I had it as a sole starter I don't think I would have liked it as much.
Waiting staff were attentive and polite but they seemed stressed and not smiled at all, made me feel like they don't like working there.
Great vegan tiramisu.
Pros: Beautifully presented food, mostly vegan, Lots of tasty starters, Vegan tiramisu!
Cons: Staff seem stressed

Great treat for special occasions - Edit
WHAT I HAD - SUNDAY ROAST [3 courses for £22.50]: Crispy Marinate Tofu (Starter) – Fried tofu marinated in maple syrup & soy sauce with a quinoa, avocado & tomato salsa, coriander & lemon dressing; Artichoke Terrine (Starter) – Truffle & hazelnut infused artichoke, homemade sundried tomato & basil salsa, grilled bread; Beetroot Cheese Burger (Main) – Pretzel bun, smoked tomato relish, cornichons & raw vegetable salad with wholegrain mustard & maple dressing with vegan cheese; Root Vegetable, Chestnut & Sage Wellington (Main) with roasted potatoes, seasonal vegetables, madeira sauce; Peanut Butter Brownie (Dessert) with vanilla ice-cream & chocolate sauce
Read moreBoth the starters we got were amazing! The crispy marinate tofu was nicely fried – crispy batter and tender tofu inside that had a tasty marinate. It was served on a generous bed of quinoa that was delicious with the salsa. The artichoke terrine was so good! Buttery, creamy and very flavourful! The salsa was fresh and fragrant.
To me, the mains we got wasn’t as outstanding as the starters. The Wellington had a nice and flaky pastry, but it wasn’t my favourite because the filling was more sweet than savoury (too much sweet potato). The veg wasn’t as well roasted too. The burger was ok, nothing special/outstanding about it to me, nevertheless, a solid well-made vegan burger. The Peanut Butter brownie? Very decadent – moist, fudgy and gooey. It is a bit too sweet for me, and the vanilla ice-cream served as the perfect balance for the richness of it.
The restaurant has a simple and contemporary décor. The staff could be more attentive to our needs, they were quite slow too. One thing is the table we sat at, there was a time when the sunlight was shining directly at my friend, shining right at his eyes (he had to squint). Very uncomfortable yet the waiter/waitress was hesitant to let us switch tables when there were plenty of free tables. Please, add some curtains or shades to the windows! It is very uncomfortable for customers at the tables by the window!
Overall, food of solid quality and taste. Some were not as good as the others, but generally above average! The prices are on the expensive side, but I think it’s reasonable for the portion and quality you get. From my experience, you can’t go wrong here with good Vegetarian/Vegan food (that will probably satisfy a non-veggie too!) – so I do recommend The Gate for special occasions/when you want to treat yourself.
Pros: Most Dishes are vegan, Delicious and Flavourful Food
Cons: Moderately High Prices, Service could be more attentive

Loved it - Edit
I chose The Gate for our work meal so there was 6 omnis and me and we all loved it. The waitress who served us was lovely and helpful in assisting the indecisive amongst us. I had the soup with gf bread for starter, mushroom risotto for main and apple and prune crumble for dessert. They were all delicious. It was nice to have good gf options though neither of the starters which can be made gf were labelled as such. Restaurant was absolutely packed for a Monday night, with a nice atmosphere. Would definitely recommend.

Wonderful gourmet vegan options - Edit
I had two wonderful meals here recently. This is a wonderful restaurant to go to when you want to enjoy a longer multi-course meal with friends. The food items are very unique and the food presentation is beautiful. I highly recommend any specials they happen to have and definitely look at the dessert menu. The majority of the menu is vegan but this is a wonderful place to take a mixed group because the food would be wonderful to wide-range of taste palates.

Great for a fancy meal - Edit
Had a lovely work Christmas dinner at The Gate - it's a mini chain a bit like 1847 but more generous portions. If you find yourself in London and looking for a fancy vegan meal I heartily recommend it.

Rude staff, pretty food - Edit
Lovely presentation and nice tasting meals. But service was poor. We booked ahead and arrived at an almost entirely empty restaurant. Despite this we were shown to the worst table (3 people crammed round a 2-seater, and right next to the only other diners). Staff twice barged past me on the stairs and also in the main restaurant. Our waitress did not know which dishes were vegan and gave the wrong information.

Spacious place. nicely renovated.

We had a lovely dinner. Mezze platter to share as a starter. Mushroom risotto and tortillas as main, and chocolate dish as dessert. Delicious!
Food was served very swiftly. Friendly service.
On the expensive side though
Wheelchair accessible + accessible toilet on ground floor (bit shabby though)
Pros: nearly all vegan, accessible, nice food, original
Cons: on the expensive side

Hit & Miss - Edit
I have visited The Gate a few times over the years. Some dishes I have had were good, some others not so. Its not the cheapest, and I have left disappointed at times but if you are in the area then give it a go. Its good for lunch.

Non-veg friends loved it - Edit
Enjoyed a team lunch here a few weeks ago. I was the only vegan in a non-veg group. We all ate vegan and everyone loved it! The food came out quickly and the presentation was amazing.

Tasty veg institution - Edit
Definitely a London vegetarian classic, the food is good although I have had a few misses with some dishes (but definitely plenty of hits). It is a bit pricey although lunch is not too much. Nice atmosphere. Would also recommend their easy cookbook, although the vegan options in that are limited.

Stylish and Tasty - Edit
Stylish restaurant. I was told it was an entirely vegan menu (but they serve dairy milk as an option for hot drinks). Interesting menu. We had desserts only and they were delicious (the Eton Mess and Tiramisu). I’d be very comfortable bringing a non vegan to this place for a meal as I think everyone would find it an appealing menu..

Best vegan meal and dessert I had - Edit
Very nice place, extremely professional and polite staff, most of the menu is vegan, the quality and presentation of the food is out of this world and the dessert I had (3 days ago) still brings smile to my face.. The chocolate mousse in dark chocolate shell blew my mind. Simply amazing, I will not hesitate to go all the way to London just to experience it again. 10/10

Really good food - Edit
I and my two friends went here for lunch recently and can’t complain about food at all. It was really delicious, good portions and looks really nice as well. Prices are a bit higher (appetiser, glass of wine, water, main, desert cost each of us £40) but as I said for quality of the food and also nice interior I am fine with it. What I didn’t like is that as we arrived with baby in buggy we were given table next to the bar where all waiters and cooks walked so I was a bit worried that they will drop something on buggy or us. I would really appreciate if were given different table. Another big disappointment was waitresses. They didn’t clear up our table before serving another meal and looked like they were expecting us to do that for them. Am I going to eat here again? Yes. But I will try different location next time.

Vegan luxury - Edit
If you want something a bit more high-end, that balances flavour and health, then The Gate is the best place to go. There are lots of vegan options and the food is delicious. It's definitely an expensive spot but the perfect place to go for a date night or a meal out with friends.

Unimpressive Over-all - Edit
My wife and I visited The Gate while in London this past August. The venue is nice, open and inviting, but the cuisine & experience did not justify the very high prices. It was an odd experience in that we had at least five different members of their staff wait on us during the course of the evening, the hostess, manager & three waiters - one who may have actually been a busboy. Two stacks of dirty dishes adorned the bar counter, quickly growing higher and higher, in view of patrons in the elevated dining area. It was early in the evening, so restaurant was not so busy that they couldn't have dispatched the soiled dishware to the kitchen. The menu items seemed somewhat limited, the actual meal was not particularly impressive. Between the two entrees we chose, my wife's was sufficient, yet mine was a remarkable small portion, and neither was inspiring to the palette ... In the end, it seemed we were paying more for the idea of what The Gate its supposed to be - vegetarian fine dining, rather than what we experienced.

My non-vegan husband loved the four mushroom risotto. I enjoyed the terrine with three kinds of lentils. I guess it was a food with numbers kind of evening. Anyway, everything was very delicious. And the waiters were extremely pleasant as well.

Something has changed here - for the better! - Edit
I've been going to The Gate on and off for quite a few years, it's fancy, so only for special occasions and so on. It's always been pretty good but I've often found the staff unfriendly and the food good, but not quite good enough for what it costs. However, the last two times I've been it has been exceptional. The vegan food has taken off in a big way, incredibly tasty and interesting dishes, the asparagus tart with cashew cheese was a particularly good choice, that really feel like they're proper top of the line cooking. The deserts where great too - and they had an eaton mess, the meringue was to die for! Also, the staff are totally different, really happy, friendly and welcoming, which makes such a difference. Perfect place for a more upscale vegan dinner out.

pricey but worth it - Edit
i visited the gate in hammersmith twice, even though it's a bit above my normal price range. my parents took me there a bit over a year ago, and back then the food was ok, but not amazing. this summer i was back in london and we went again, and i'm not sure what changed but it was definitely for the better. the food was not just tasty but like fancy extra tasty. we were really impressed. the place looks very nice, has a high-end atmosphere but also not too uptight. if you can afford it it's definitely worth it. otherwise convince your parents to take you there ;)
