All-day brunch with funky decor - Edit
This is a branch of a popular chain of diners that serves all-day features clearly marked vegan items. I had the vegan scramble which I thought was fantastic. If I lived in the area, the limited vegan menu might eventually concern me, so I probably wouldn't go here too often. But for a visit, I was quite impressed.

Friendly is right! - Edit
What a nice group of people running an adorable restaurant! Honestly the staff are just so great I would love this place even if it didn’t have other things going for it (which it does). The food is good—nothing extraordinary, but well-made, fresh, and tasty—and the kitschy décor is hilarious. I went three mornings in a row while in Portsmouth and customized a slightly different tofu scramble each time. All were great!

Yummy burrito! - Edit
We had brunch here and really enjoyed the breakfast burrito, which is vegan and can be made gluten free. The portions were very generous, and the food was yummy and comforting. They were quite busy on Sunday morning with over an hour of wait time, so I’d recommend signing up on their waiting list online if you want breakfast on a busy morning. Luckily, we got donuts at Lovebird around the corner to tide us over while we waited!

Lots of vegan options! - Edit
Loved the bustling atmosphere and friendly service. We had to wait 30 minytes for our table, but it was worth the wait. I got the vegan breakfast burrito and a delicious bloody mary. Will definitely be back!

Awesome place - Edit
I really liked this place, with all the decoration and things to look at. They’re having a few vegan options, like vegan breakfast burrito, scrambled tofu (you’re also able to build your own), vegan pancakes. It was perfect for our road-trip and also boozey brunch😄

Veganized tostada - Edit
Not many vegan options on the new menu: pancakes and burrito are labeled. Other things starred as vegan with mods. We asked for the tostada with tofu instead of eggs and vegan cheese— it was delicious!! Vegan burrito was pretty good too. Coffee was good and they had oat milk. Fun retro decor and ‘00s alt music. Friendly and quick service (we arrived right at opening).

Delicious Fun Food with Fun Decor - Edit
We ate brunch here while we were on a road trip in New England. The food was totally delicious. It wasn't super healthy but it was fun! Sometimes you have to eat "fun food"! Everything was clearly marked vegan/vegetarian. We ordered the donut sandwich, huevos rancheros, stuffed tots, stuffed empanadas. Rest assured you should work out after a meal like this! But it was totally worth it! The service was friendly and happy. The décor was cute, retro and fun! We would totally go back!

Makes me miss the Kendall location. - Edit
It wasn’t too good which is a bummer since they have a lot of vegan/vegetarian options. They managed to both burn and under-cook my vegan pancake. It tasted like flour and burn. It wasn’t good. My husband made his own veggie burger which tasted fine but didn’t hold up after the first bite.

Fun and funky but not so fabulous - Edit
Came here for breakfast before heading back on the road for our trip. Three stars for the fun decor, cool vibe and options like vegan pancakes and scramble. However, in my opinion, the food was overpriced for what you get. Quality and taste were just okay. The scramble was kinda oily and at $15, not worth it. Also, the pancakes were not fluffy and slightly burned on one side…not enough to send back but definitely it negatively affected the taste. Service was slow, but it was during breakfast rush, so that may not be typical.

My Favorite Breakfast Place - Edit
It's all about the food, funky decor, and friendly vibe in this popular eatery.
Read moreThe vegan burrito is scrumptious, as are the vegan pancakes. I just wish they had vegan chocolate chips to add to them.

An old favorite, now very disappointing - Edit
As a vegan NH native now living overseas, I would always look forward to eating at Friendly Toast with my vegan kids when visiting relatives in the Portsmouth area. According to the very friendly staff during my recent visit, they've just introduced a new menu, and in my opinion it's a disaster. The impressive list of dishes is almost impossible to navigate (the staff agreed), and despite adding prominent symbols denoting new dishes and old favorites, there's no symbol marking vegan (or gluten-free) options. There are still a few vegan dishes, but you have to pay more for the necessary substitutions, and some key ingredients are just dropped with no compensation at all. Admittedly, the meals we ordered were tasty, but most were far too small for the price we paid. While I'm sure this eatery will continue to remain a local favorite, I wouldn't recommend it to the Happy Cow community, and I definitely won't be back.

Slightly biased, yet informative opinion - Edit
I have been bartending here for a couple years, so am slightly biased. I have seen the vegan Mac fall in quality, but also seen the addition of awesome dishes and products like the beyond sausage links.
Read moreMy main reason for leaving a review is to let the community know that we are now also carrying non-dairy baileys (almande). It isn't posted on the menu, as not all locations carry this product. However, vegans can get delicious espresso martinis and Irish coffees at the portsmouth location. Cheers!

The friendly Toast isn’t so friendly... - Edit
I am very disappointed with the service at the (un)friendly toast. I was very excited to try out the vegan options but the minute we stepped into the restaurant we were met with unlawful expectations. They wanted to sell us a face masks because they said our face coverings were illegal even though there is no such law. People are zombies. Our noses and mouths were FULLY covered but our face scarves. They just wanted to make an extra profit off of us. Very disappointed.

I love the inside of this place! But every time I've visited I haven't had the best service which makes me hesitate to keep going back. They have a fairly impressive list of vegan options but there food isn't out of this world. I think you would be happier visiting this restaurant as a vegetarian rather than a vegan.

Good Vegan Options but Beware - Edit
Yummy vegan options but be warned: I have been given non vegan items after being very clear about being vegan 2 times of the 4 I have gone. They’re vegan potato nachos are great, but my favorite option is the build your own tofu scramble. The mimosa flights are great if you’re in the mood for a drink.

Meh - Edit
I’ve gotten everything vegan here from the nachos, pancakes, wraps, tofu scramble to the mac & cheese and it’s all good but not amazing. Maybe I’ve just gone here too many times or I’m more into “healthy” fresh food now, but def good if you’re in the mood for junk food! FYI the veggie sausage and bacon isn’t even vegan??? and fries are cooked in same oil as other fried meat.

We had the Vegan Nachos and don’t get me wrong, they were really good, but will not live on in my dreams (sorry SusieDiV)... instead we have been there twice (and live about 2 hours away from the Portsmouth location) for their amazing Falafel Wraptor - I even love the name! We have gotten it as a wrap and salad!! We can’t get enough of that awesomeness!!!

Best. Vegan. Nachos. - Edit
This has place has by far the best vegan nachos I've ever had, and I consider myself something of a vegan nacho connoisseur. The cheese sauce and the chips are made on-site, and they add just the right amount of beans and salsa. They give you a side of guac, but I didn't even need it-- they were perfect without it. Honestly I scraped the plate to get every last drop! I also had a vegan breakfast burrito (delicious!) and their mimosa flight (4 yummy flavors-- also delicious). But those vegan nachos will live on in my dreams until I can get back to Portsmouth. We also had a very nice and helpful bartender. Thanks, Glynnis! Quirky and fun atmosphere with veg/vegan options - Edit
Great cocktails and fun place to go for Sunday brunch. Some pretty good vegan options on the menu, but no worries because the staff is very knowledgeable about making things custom vegan or if you have food allergies. I had the tofu scramble and thought it was excellent. Their breads are homemade and delicious too, but be sure to ask which are vegan and which aren’t. Definitely a fun place and I’ll be back.
