Best city centre shop

8th Day is the second best shop for vegan food in Manchester and the best near the city centre. The supermarket offers a wide range of prepared vegan and vegetarian foods and other products including a wide range of vitamins and supplements. Downstairs is the 8th Day cafe, which is one of the best vegan places that doesn't just offer junk food. Here you can find arguably the best vegan cake in the city centre. We'll worth visiting.

Pros: Largest selection of vegan options in city centre, Excellent staff, Ethical

Cons: Expensive, Not completely vegan, No parking

Great vegetarian shop :)

Review of the store:

I really like 8th day, it's great that it's totally vegetarian where you can get spices, grains and pulses, vegetables, toiletries, bakery, whatever you need!

I wish it was fully vegan, but it's still quite good and they have big selection of sweets, teas and soft drinks!

The prices are quite high, but at least they pay their employees living wages so I get it.
And it's nice to have a place like that in the city centre

Visited only the shop, haven't ate at the cafe.

The shop stock a lot of product, including Booja Booja chocolate and has a lot to offer.
I didn't like that they offer a 10% discount only to students in the UK. That really sucks.

Pros: Many products

Cons: 10% off only if you'r a student studying in the UK

Good Vegan options

I like the 8th Day and know that my lunch is going to contain the nutrition 8 need, I just feel the options are limited. Also portion sizes could be better. Amazing cake options, but a little on the pricey side for a student area.

Vegan Breakfast Top Notch

On the Eighth Day is an institution in Manchester located on Oxford Road, with a fabulous vegetarian shop on the first floor selling hundreds of products and a vegetarian and vegan cafe below the shop. I had avocado on toast with mushrooms and tomatoes, although you can add tofu or sausages to the breakfast if you wish. My husband had a full vegan gluten free breakfast, both dishes were delicious, just check out my photos.

I love 8th Day, both the cafe and shop, loads of options, with a huge display of vegan cakes in the chiller cabinet in the cafe and every kind of product sold in the shop.

One of the best vegan breakfasts in Manchester.

Unimpressed

I was very unimpressed by this place and I wouldn't recommend it. The food was okay but nothing special and it wasn't cheap either. There was an okay choice but for a vegetarian place I was expecting more vegan options.

Cons: Expensive, Not lots of choice

an alright place!

i appreciate any veggie place that’s been around for a while, therefore definitely wanted to check this out!
unfortunately they were out of the apple & berry crumble so i ended up with a walnut & carrot cake with ginger frosting. frosting was excellent but unfortunately there was a lot of it which made the cake extremely sweet. less frosting and it would have been perfect. but that’s personal preference.
prices are ok but when in the area i’d probably prefer going to sidney street cafe instead, as i preferred the atmosphere there.

the shop on ground level has a huge range of anything vegan. they also sell my favourite skin product brand „sukin“ which was a pleasure to find!
they also have an amazing amount of lovely little savoury treats close to the cashier. i found it a little awkward that prices are a lot higher (50/60p might not seem a lot but is when something is only about 2,50) in case you want to eat those hot instead if cold, but, well...

Pros: variety, location

Best vegan breakfast.... In the world!

This is our absolute favourite vegan breakfast. I take inspiration from this and try to recreate at home too - especially the fried tofu as an egg replacement.

There's nothing to fault. The sausages are meat alternative (not the salty glamorgan ones you often get), fried tofu is to die for, toast is really nice wholemeal, even the beans are suped-up!

Coffee also very tasty and they have a range of plant-based milks to choose from, including our fave; the barista oatly.

We come here a lot.... :D

The mains and lunches are also delish, but we don't often get to come here as the opening hours are during day only closed from 7pm. It's also closed on Sundays :(

Pros: Breakfast!!!!, Great milk alternatives, Lots of cakes!

Cons: Not open Sundays , Not open in the evenings

Comfort food.

Traditional, almost pub like food where you can get a good comforting meal with huge portions, and then your shopping on the way out.
Staff always nice and welcoming, and students have 10% off in the shop and the cafe.
Have been several times over the years living in Manchester and always a good place to chill and catch up with friends.
The shop can be a tad on the expensive side comapared to somewhere like Unicorn Grocery, but probably good value still when you compare it to elsewhere in the country.

great breakfast

the breakfast is really good and filling. we couldn't leave without trying some cake as well though. :)
I had the raspberry vanilla cake which was ok, but the icing was just wayyyy too sugary for my taste.
the atmosphere was cosier than expected.

Pros: friendly staff, nice atmosphere, good value

Cons: none really

I've been going there for two decades!

I've always been a fan, and have been going since the days when it was a very small shop and cafe, rather than spread over two floors like now. It's probably the best it has ever been. I love the way you can eat downstairs, then get some shopping upstairs on the way out.

The shop's takeaway counter always has a huge range of pasties and cakes, most of them vegan. The cafe has lovely food options - sandwiches, salads, hot meals, smoothies, and lots of cake options. Again, a lot of the options are vegan. I love 8th Day, it's a haven in the city.

Pros: Good options, lots for vegans, A really nice place

Cons: None

From the old school

Eight Day is very much a cafe of the 80s. It has the basement canteen thing going on, only ever a few options and pretty basic food. But they do that well. It's a pleasant basement canteen and the food is always tasty. I find the vibe and nice reminder of veggie cafe days gone by. I guess it reminds the (then) one veggie cafe in my nearest city growing up so it feels homely but I can see how now everyone would feel that.

I'd usually like a bigger portion, especially because it's not that cheap but it's still reasonable value for money. The food does taste good, occasionally very tasty but never anything exciting. Having everything be one pot dishes to sit on the hot plate really limits them. The choice of vegan cakes is great because they buy in from two different bakeries.

I still go here more often than any other cafe, it's quick, friendly and dependable. I know it's a bit dull but I just still like it.

Letdown

This cafe has been there forever, it used to be fantastic, great food at good prices. I think the food has gone down hill and the portions are tiny. I still eat there now and again hoping it has changed but alas it doesnt.

Pros: shop, its a co-op

Cons: Small portions, a bit expensive

Poor cafe. Good but expensive shop.

I'd been eating at 'Eighth Day' for over 15 years before it dawned on me that I'd never really enjoyed a meal there!

That might sound a little daft but I was always so relieved to have somewhere that I knew provided Vegan options that I'd never stopped to think about the food itself.

Let's put the positive(s) first: the desserts are generally very good with a variety of Vegan choices. There are also good, tasty smoothie options.

As for the rest of the food: personally I tend to find it quite dry and boring. They really do appear to embrace the "wholefood" philosophy which unfortunately can mean lots of bland pulses etc. A non-Vegan friend of mine ate here with me fairly recently as he was genuinely keen to try Vegan food and had an open mind to doing so in the future. The experience has completely turned him off such cuisine and he now refuses point blank to try anything Vegan! Such a shame because whilst what he tried at Eighth Day was pretty representative of their food it was not typical of the tasty Vegan food we all know and love.

A little like 'The Egg' in Liverpool, Eighth Day Cafe is a very dated interpretation of a vegetarian and Vegan eaterie. Certainly not fun or uplifting.

The shop upstairs is however very good and stocks a lot of Vegan foodstuffs as well as alcoholic produce. They also have a deli counter with a good choice of pasties, wraps, desserts and so on. The shop is quite expensive but I guess most places of this type are.

My 3 Star (Cow) rating is an average for both the cafe and shop. I would rate the Cafe itself as 2 stars and the Shop as 4.

Nice food

Got a nice lentil curry here, we chilled for hours downstairs sipping tea with soya milk. Lovely vegan cakes,
loved the vegan snacks upstairs, and staff were keen that we had enjoyed the food, asking was all ok.

Pros: vegan foods, snacks in shop, tasty

Cons: overpriced shop, looks like a student basement flat.

The factory records of food

A Manchester institution, my other half has been coming here since her student days in the city in the late 80s/early 90s. We always try to come for breakfast if we stay in the city and pick something up for lunch from the counter upstairs in the shop.

The shop is very well stocked and the cafe is not salubrious, more a cafeteria but the food is bloody good along with the music and the atmosphere. Love this place.

basement eating...

Not good for the less able. A bit canteen like...and expensive considering that...but the chick pea tagine was very good. Sausage casserole good too. both chocolate and vanilla chai cakes were very dry (if not stale).

Pros: downstairs to a vegetarian shop...

Cons: expensive. all options similar...stew, casserole,

Wholesome, flavoursome food

The shop upstairs is excellent, and has an impressive deli counter (look out for the vegan croissants, they're amazing!). Downstairs you find the cafe and a large seating area. As well as a small salad section, there's a daily bake, dahl and a few chilli/curry-type dishes, with the options of rice, potatoes and green veg. It's really flavoursome food, and the portions are generous. The breakfasts are also good, and it's one of the earliest starts for vegan breakfasts in Manchester.

There's also an extensive cake section (vegan options clearly labelled), and I've never been disappointed. The vanilla chai cake is my favourite.

It's not a fancy place, you collect your food at the counter like a canteen and clear your tray away at the end. Great value for money and a wonderful place in the vegan community.

great shop and cafe

Both the shops and the cafe downstairs are really great for veggies and vegans, either for picking up supplies, refuelling or meeting for social meet-ups. The salad bar is good for taking food away and the hot meals are really good if you have more time.

If you are visiting Manchester then you can't ask for much more!
