Very disappointing afternoon tea

So disappointing. We came to Manchester specially for this having been to the Allotment years ago and loved it. The sandwiches were ok but bread was a bit dry around the edges. Cakes were very dry and scone was extremely dense and pancake thin.
From reading the other reviews it seems the quality here varies a lot. We won't risk it again.

Lovely food, beautiful interior

First time I’ve been to the allotment as I was part of a hen party. When we first walked in we were greeted by a lovely lady and shown to our seats. We ordered our drinks I ordered a non alcoholic mocktail and it was delicious. I also ordered a sharing platter with my friend and have to say all food, service and vibe was spot on. I’d definitely recommend and would go again when I’m next in Manchester

Pros: The decor, Friendly staff , The food!!

Rereviewed - concerns

Enjoyed Allotment greatly in past years.

Appears to still be under the same owner/management on the business side as Lloyd St days, but no longer 'chef-led'. Food has famously been pretty erratic in recent yrs as a result.

Nowadays, shared management with the adjoining Mitre Pub/Hotel/Carnist Restaurant next door ('sister restaurant'). The relocation from Lloyd St was presumably to keep it open, and prop it up.

The extent to which the service areas and resources employed behind the scenes are 'adjoining' vs 'shared' is not clear. Tbh, they could brownie-promise me it's totally separate, but i see the adjoining door and think ... hmm. The bar does not look sufficiently stocked to support the cocktail menu on its own - hmm. My sense of assurance and confidence in this partition is currently at its lowest.

If you are happy to eat a 'vegan option' from a pub menu, none of this will bother you. However, many ppl use Happycow to find wholly vegan premises - for a reason.

We whizzed by this month, spotted (not-vegan) Dove soap in the toilets, and reversed out pretty quickly.

I've given the lowest rating I can - to flag these real concerns for others who want to know.

Cons: Attached to non-vegan business, Dove hand soap, Toilets open STRAIGHT onto dining area

Definitely a nice option in the city centre

Most vegan restaurants in Manchester tend to be fast food places which is not necessarily a bad thing but if you want a bit elegant presentation then Allotment is the place for you. I enjoy the food there however I would say the food is great but I feel for the reputation that the restaurant has as fine dining the food could be alot better but it's still worth visiting for sure.

Cons: The vegan fish was good but not amazing , In general the restaurant feels a bit understaffed

Nice Fish & Chips

We reach the restaurant and ask which dish does not contains Alliums, lucky that Fish & Chips is ok for us.

We tried the food and it was nice, the batter was crispy.

Recommend for vegetarian that don’t take alliums.

Disappointing

Ordered a selection of small plates, soup was cold and came without bread, other plates were very small portions and not that exciting. Cauliflower wings were tasty though. Ate again somewhere else a few hours later.

Pros: Nice location and decor

Cons: Small portions, Disappointing flavours, Cold soup!

Great Afternoon Tea

We stumbled across this vegan restaurant and were able to order afternoon tea even though we didn't make a reservation (which is usually required/recommended) and it was lovely! We paid 16£ per person including a hot drink (but you can upgrade for prosecco). The restaurant has a nice interior design and kind staff. The food was so delicious, we got different little savoury dishes like a sandwich, soup and cauliflower wings and three different desserts. We can highly recommend The Allotment and will come back to try out the other meals ☺️

Pros: All vegan, Delicious food, Kind staff

Inconsistent

Food quality is inconsistent. Some dishes are great and others awful. Some of the ingredients used taste low quality and cheap. Overhyped in my opinion, sorry 😞.

Really good food, great choice variety!

Really enjoyed eating at The Allotment. They had a choice of small plates, main courses and desserts. I had 3 small dishes, all ranging from £5,50-£7,50. All was very delicious and I would definitely come back here!

Sunday roast

Went for a sunday roast. Location is nice but the food was a bit deceptive (A whole block of unmarinated tofu, while the sauce served on the side was otherwise very good). And quite expansive also.

good food

We had a selection of the starters which surprised me in many ways in their taste. Definitely a restaurant to go to for vegans. Nice location vis a vis the cathedral with a possibility to sit outside. I would give 4,5 stars ⭐️ if I could !

Gone downhill

I was lucky enough to eat at The Allotment when it was based in Stockport and the food and service were top notch. I’ve been keen to return ever since but was sadly disappointed by my recent experience. The food quality has gone downhill significantly, a very poorly cooked and put together dish. I opted for the fysh and chips which is always a good benchmark in the UK, but it fell far short of expectations. The chips weren’t great, the battered banana blossom flavourless and a bit soggy, the ‘tartare’ sauce was just a squeeze of mayo! Service was a bit hit and miss. On the positive side the restaurant is in a great location and beautiful building.

Absolutely incredible

We visited twice, once for lunch and once in the evening. We thoroughly enjoyed both meals.

For lunch we had the satay, cauliflower wings and the truffle and garlic hand cut chips. Sticky toffee pudding for dessert.

This evening we had the garlic and truffle chips again. For mains we had the bahn mi sandwich and fish and chips.

Everything especially the hand cut chips were incredible.

Great vegan dinner

My wife and I had a great vegan dinner here on a visit to Manchester. The restaurant is right opposite the cathedral with indoor and outdoor seating. The menu offers small and large plates, we had a couple of small plates as starters. The king oyster mushroom “scallops” on mushy peas were delicious, as were the garlic and truffle chips! My main was a lovely spicy laksa curry while my wife had s summer bowl of veg, hummus, beans and quinoa. Both were excellent. And the sticky toffee pudding to finish was fantastic!

Dirty restaurant. Undercooked food. Inattentive staff. Avoid.

Staff were unwelcoming on arrival. My table was sticky where it hadn’t been wiped down from the last customer. The sides were dusty. Paid for a soup of the day as part of the sharing platter, that never came. Cauliflower was rock hard. As were the chips in the middle. Nobody came over to ask how the food was, possibly because they knew how bad it was. Really bad experience. Would definitely advise people to avoid this place (and have done now).

Annoyed that Happy Cow won’t let me give this 1 star. Or no stars.

Cons: Dirty , Uncercooked food , Inattentive staff

We didn't get olives on our sharing Platter (must have ran out) but we got wasabi peas instead which we enjoyed.

Great vegan food

They had delcious truffle fries and probably the best "cauliflower wings"/fried/breaded cauliflower I have tried. The banana blosson fish and chips was interesting and tasted great.

Pros: Cauliflower , Nice staff

Better Options

Rather overpriced for the taste. Considering how much of a vegan hub Manchester is, I found this place disappointing and devoid of taste. It was empty when we arrived and the food took about 20 minutes for each course.
We had the Cauliflower Wings and Tofu Kebab. These were nice with a hearty amount of dipping sauce. The tofu kebab was a little small for my liking, as i expected some more cucumber and quinoa.
Unfortunately, the food was only down for there. I got the Bahn Mi Sandwich. It had one slice of carrot and cucumber, with an undercooked baguette. The potatoes on the side were very nice, but I could not recommend the sandwich.
My partner got the Tom Yum. It was very watery and a bit sad. The taste was otherwise okay, but don't expect a depth of flavour.
I like the atmosphere and how they serve the soft drinks in pint glasses. There was only one waitress manning everything when we arrived and she was more than lovely, if not a lil busy when more people arrived. She didn't check on us at all.
Overall, it's fine. I would recommend the smaller plates over the main courses.

Food was very meh

I wouldn’t call it fine dining. It was just an average restaurant, nothing special. I had mushroom scallops and a sharer platter. It wasn’t very flavourful, quite bland, not really enjoyable. It felt like it just came out a jar, packet or tin, and not seasoned. The chickpeas and tofu skewers were not very nice. The soup and cauliflower wings were good though. I Wouldn’t recommend going as Manchester has so many incredible places for vegans.

Nice food, great location

We ate here on a recent trip to Manchester. Really great city centre location and lovely right by the cathedral.
We had the jackfruit tacos - amazingly soft jackfruit combined with lovely, crispy tacos. We also had the tofu laksa - unfortunately this was served with stale tortilla chips rather than poppadoms as promised on the menu. A minor point but a shame since everything else was first class. The chocolate raspberry tart for dessert was incredible.
Would definitely recommend this place - make sure to book since it's quite small.
Lovely service.

Pros: Location, Good food, Great chocolate tart

Not what I thought

Let's start with the positives. The staff were very welcoming and attentive. The décor inside was very homely, giving the restaurant a lovely warm atmosphere. Unfortunately the food was average for what it cost. Me and my partner had a salad and a curry dish. The salad dish was stacked with broccoli and not much else going on. The curry had some flavour, but once again, for the price it could have been considerably more flavoursome. With such great reviews, we will give it another go in the future, and hopefully we can tell a different story.

So-so

Eaten here twice, once pre-covid when it was in its old venue and had a seven course tasting menu and it was AMAZING.

Me and my omnivore partner went again for my birthday and were expecting similar. We were a bit disappointed. The menu was well thought out but when it arrived the food was quite basic (for the type of restaurant that it is) although it was tasty and good quality. The service was unenthusiastic, we were never asked how our meal was, we had to go in search of front of house staff to order more drinks and dessert, and the lights were on fully with no ambient music making for an unwelcoming atmosphere. However this was a mid-week night.

There are better vegan fine dining experiences in Manchester for a similar price. Given that we went to the trouble of getting a babysitter for the first time in ages, I wished we’d gone to Greens.

That said, given how well thought out the menu was; and our previous taster menu experience, I suspect the special taster days/nights that Allotment runs are still great, I’d like to try them.

Pros: Menu changes regularly, Tasted like good quality produce , Special taster days/nights

Cons: Unenthusiastic service, Expensive for what it is, Small portions (given that it’s 3-course)
