Mixed emotions - Edit
Vegan restaurants in the region are mostly concentrated in the city centre of Amsterdam. That's good news if you happen to be in Amsterdam, but not such good news for others. Public transportation can be unpleasant (sketchy people, unfavourable schedules) but parking a car can be more expensive than the actual shopping or dining experience.
Read moreSo we looked for an alternative and found it in "Thai from the Sky" located in the little shopping mall called "Kostverlorenhof" in the city of Amstelveen. It's easy to reach by car and parking is free for the first 2 hours.
Thai from the Sky has two entrances, so it's easy to find. But when we wanted to make an evening of it, the waiter said there's a staff shortage and it's take out only. No dining in the restaurant. Having little alternative (the Greek restaurant next door looks especially vegan unfriendly) we opted for take out.
The "Som tam vega" is a nice salad from vegetables and peanuts with a distinct lemon freshness. It's really different in taste and structure to what a Chinese, Indian or Japanese restaurant would serve so we were quite happy. However, 16 euro is a bit steep for what is basically a simple salad. Also, papaya should be the main ingredient but was hard to find.
Thai from a Sky has a number of main dishes based on "Fhicken", which is vegan chicken. Based on the waiter's advice we went for the "Fhicken Pad Prik Bai Prapauw". It is vegetables with basil, onions and pepper. Based on the original starter, we had great expectations but they were not met. Although the "fhicken" tastes great, the rest of the meal isn't anything special. The taste differs little from the average cheap Chinese meal and the ingredients don't particularly work well together. Considering the price of 19 euro, it's again much overpriced.
Therefore we were left with mixed emotions: although we don't regret trying "Thai from the Sky" once, it is not worth a second visit. It's not special enough while the prices are far too high.

So Vegan Friendly that they can make almost any dish vegan - Edit
This has become our favourite Thai restaurant in Amsterdam/Amstelveen not only because of the lovely server, Juliet, and the owner Oded, but since my husband and I have been vegan since 1990 and 1991 respectively, we so value a restaurant that works so hard in being vegan friendly that they are able and willing to make nearly everything vegan on their menu. They label many of the items vegan, but then when speaking to customers, they explain that they can make anything vegan. It is comforting and refreshing to have a Thai restaurant that is so accommodating and promotes veganism. The food is fabulous. The portions are large. The staff is great. The prices are reasonable. This place is highly recommended. I would give five stars if I could, but five starts is reserved for completely vegan restaurants.
