Tasty Veggie Thai Food

The best Thai restaurant in Davis hands-down. Thai Canteen is a simple counter-service restaurant serving authentic Thai food with large portions and at an affordable price. Service is hit or miss depending on who’s working. However, no one has been particularly mean spirited.

They offer quite a few vegan and vegetarian options such as their yellow curry, pad Thai, pineapple fried rice, stir fried eggplant, drunken noodles, and Thai tea (can be made with coconut milk instead of dairy cream). You order at the counter, find a table, and they bring the food and silverware to your table. Water and condiments are self serve across from the front counter. If you order any drinks they will be ready to pick up from the counter after you order.

My go to order is their Vegan Pad Thai prepared Medium Spicy, with tofu and mixed veggies as the protein. The portion is large and the flavors are well-balanced, though a bit on the spicier side. The noodles are coated in the perfect amount of sauce. They are very generous with the tofu and veggies. The meal was around $16 before tip which is great because it served as two meals.

Pros: Large Portions, Tasty food

Tasty, vegan options

I really like how the food can be altered to be made vegan and gluten-free!

The food isn’t the most amazing, but it’s decent and affordable.

Pros: Vegan options, Gluten-free options

Cons: Can get pretty crowded

Misleading menu

A few items are marked vegan, and are. But more items are marked Vegetarian but contain fish sauce. When I complained about that, the person taking my order said 'people have different definitions of vegetarian.'

Cons: Their menu lists foods with fish sauce as 'vegetar

Great Downtown Thai

Great Thai food with nice flavor. First of what will be many visits. Had a creative vegan appetizer from the Happy Hour menu (they were chive filled round discs cut into fourths with a sweet chili type dipping sauce). Ordered two other mains that were great and big enough to take a little home. Also had a vegan Thai iced tea which was excellent. Will remember to request brown rice going forward as we forgot to specify when we ordered and the default was white.

Pros: Creative specials with at least one vegan option, Nice open restaurant with a few tables outside, Well informed staff able to help veganize orders

Tasty, well-marked vegan options

Thai Canteen has outdoor and indoor seating and is very popular among Davisites. They serve Thai noodle and rice dishes with tofu as the option for a protein, and salads. The menu on the chalk board is not marked, but the printed menu and on line menu is color coded with dots for the options that can be prepared vegan. You need to ask for them vegan. If you do not like food deep fried in shared fryers, ask for the tofu to be regular, not fried. We had the Pad Priew Wan and Pad Kee Mao and they were very flavorful and delicious. There are 3 types of rice (brown, sticky, white). They have a full bar. We saw a group of college kids playing cards at the back of the room and enjoying hanging out.

Pros: Great flavor, Fast service, Outdoor seating option

Cons: Wish there were a few more options
