We were trying to find something everyone could agree on. We all like Thai and we weren’t disappointed. I ordered the Gang Ga Li (yellow curry) with tofu, medium heat. It tasted like our favorite Thai place at home and lunch portions were quite filling. Kids chose Pad Thai and my wife really enjoyed her Massamun curry. We both would have like a bit more heat, but we enjoyed this place and will definitely be back when we come back to this side is the state.
This was our first time going and we were blown away! First off, the service was great. Our waiter was attentive and answered all of our questions. The manager (owner's son) came out and talked to us. Like, actually talked, not just the standard "How was your food?" He asked our names, commented on what we had ordered, and was just very gracious. Made us feel like VIPs.
Second, the food. As a West Michigan vegan or vegetarian, this place is your new best friend. They have over 20 vegan options on the menu! In addition, my favorite menu feature was the veggie option. They had the usual tofu meat substitute option OR you could get vegetables. Oh man! The veggie mix was abundant and delicious! Carrots, broccoli, asparagus, etc. all cooked to perfect crisp-tender and overflowing on the plate. Fresh and absolutely delicious!
We ordered the vegetarian egg rolls (tasty), fried tofu with peanut sauce and cucumber salad (peanut sauce was divine, cucumber salad was fresh and a kid-favorite), veggie pad thai for my 3 kids to split (they gobbled it up and we still brought home a ton), veggie peanut curry (ordered mild and actually cooked mild! Spice level was exactly as stated), veggie ginger stir fry (ordered medium, again spice level perfect - fresh ginger in the dish was awesome!), and the mango sticky rice for dessert (to die for!! Mango was beautifully ripe, sticky rice and coconut sauce were perfect).
Overall, we decided next time we will skip the appetizers (not because they weren't good, just to save room) and opt for the cucumber salad to start and then dive right into entrees. Definitely portioned for 2 people to share or to bring home leftovers. Price was super reasonable. With the price and portion sizes, my family of 5 could easily eat here on the cheap for $30 if we didn't want dessert or leftovers (except we do and you better believe we will be fighting over them).
We are so sad it took us a whole year to discover this hidden gem in our own backyard. Sorry China Inn and Blue Ginger, you've lost customers! Thai Avenue is our new destination for Asian cuisine!!
