Worthy of the hype - Edit
We tried to walk in on a Saturday night and the place was booked our and we were turned away. So we made a reservation for Tuesday and our booking was cancelled due to a function. We were however contacted and invited in for lunch so we changed our plans to suit. It was worth it!
Read moreThink traditional Japanese counter meals more modern and with table service. I had the tempura noodle meal and the chef was attentive and understanding of vegans needs. A beautiful array of veges were provided and the noodles were amazing. My partner had the kitsune and the tofu was so flavourful.
Cheap, delicious and worth checking out. We even got complementary strawberries and tea after our meal

Vegan broth udon - Edit
Nice restaurant with a separate vegan (English) menu. Udon made using vegan dashi, tasted very good. Also lot of other vegan (side) dishes (e.g., tempura, potatoes, onigiri). Free tea and sweets afterwards.

Good udon - Edit
First place I went when I got to Hiroshima, they have a menu with vegan options: tempura and udon. I had the udon with fried tofu. Good meal, but not a lot of flavor. Tempura was great. Kitchen takes last order 1 hour before the restaurant closes.

Taiko udon FTW - Edit
Anyone who knows my reviews can see I have very basic - but uncompromising - standards. I don't need or want fancy anything, or a bunch of pomp and circumstance. Fresh, at least marginally creative whole foods, prepared in a pleasing way and delivered with some attention to the customer is pretty much a bang on way to get me to give a good review.
Read moreTaiko hits all the right notes in all the right spots. They have quite a few vegan selections, which means they at least sort of "get it." I ordered the vegan oroshi which is udon with grated daikon and ginger. For kicks I also ordered their vegan tempura. Both were pretty much perfect. Hard to do a really great vegan "dashi" but they've managed to somehow make something delicate and flavorful. The tempura was just right. Not an extraneous drop of oil. The staff were outgoing and helpful from the moment I stepped in until the moment I left.
I don't give too many "don't miss this" reviews, but yeah, don't miss this. Definitely a highlight of my food experiences in Japan.
Pros: Best vegan udon around, for my money, Service excellence, Good menu for the veg among us
Cons: Shame it's not an exclusively veg restaurant! :-)

Yummy - Edit
There are a lot of vegan options and I really enjoyed the udon with fried tofu and some vegan springrolls.
Read moreThe service is really good and they offer tea and japanese style kanten jelly dessert after the food.
You can have a large portion for 100 Yen extra. The bowl was huge and even my boyfriend who always hates japanese portions was satisfied.
Pros: Lord of vegan options, Friendly staff, Large portions possible

AMAZING - Edit
We were asked if we were vegan as we sat down (do we look like that lol?) and the waiter gave us a tablet and showed us the vegan section on the digital menue. You can easily scroll through it, click on the pictures and read the description. The food was so good! We will definitely go there again. Highly recommend!

Taiko Udon Hiroshima - Edit
Taiko Udon was absolutely fantastic. Whilst we were in Hiroshima, we struggled to find an udon redtaurant that offered proper vegetarian options other than Kitsune udon. Taiko Udon offers really unique udon dishes that you wont find anywhere else! They have a proper English menu and the staff speak English. The atmosphere is really nice and the meals are cheaper than you would expect. I definitely recommend this place!
