Amazing food - why is no one talking about the crab?!

We came here after trying to eat at the china town stalls and leaving hungry when we couldn’t find anything savoury and vegan. Thank goodness the food was great and is a local place/ no frills.

Don’t sleep on the deep fried crab with sweet chilli, order it, it was AMAZING - we had to check it wasn’t actually crab. I wish we’d had time to return and have it again.

We also ordered the cashew chicken, tom yum and spring rolls - all of which were great.

The food is msg based, watch out if you’re allergic to it!

For years this has been my absolute no 1 best vegan restaurant in Bangkok. I really loved this place.
The food is delicious, staff is very friendly, restaurant is authentic (which gives it a charm) and the prices are low.

Unfortunately I often felt unwell after having eaten. During our last visit, because it was rather busy, we sat in their extended restaurant, which also functions as their shop. There we saw a jar containing Tom yum paste. Among the ingredients we noticed that monosodium glutamate/Ajinomoto/MSG/ve tsin is one of the ingredients. For me it was a valid explanation as to why I always got unwell after I had dinner at this place since I get an allergic reaction to this ingredient. Unfortunately, due to that, I will probably not go back again. So sorry about that 🥺

If you can prove an MSG allergy I’m sure there’s a lot of doctors who would love to see you, because decades and decades of testing have proved MSG allergies aren’t a myth since there are not antibodies that react with it. MSG is in pretty much all restaurant food in Asia as well as in common western foods like Doritos.

Very tasty!

This place is worth trying! Soo many options! Most are vegan and they only have egg noodles clearly labelled. We ordered the vegan fish curry, vegan chicken with cashews and fried chicken on the side. The vegan chicken was very good! They also have free iced tea.
It's quite small but we managed to get a seat :)

Made us unwell

This is so sad because the food was really delicious but 4/5 of our group got sick after eating here. The staff are lovely and I hope that this was a one off situation for them as other reviews are great.

Train station Chinese

Chinese restaurant by Hua Lamphong train station. Predominantly vegan, in fact I couldn’t find anything on their menu that wasn’t. Food was very tasty and portions are generous. A bit higher price than your average Jay food places in the area, but still very reasonable. The place is small but has a proper clean sit down dining area with AC. I Had their “meat-ball” salad and the “sea-food” curry, both were excellent. I will definitely go back to try more

A piece of heaven in the Sin city of Asia

This restaurant is a paradise for any vegetarian. Great chinese food with "mock meat" for a good price. Redemption might be possible after all...

Great vegan options in Chinatown

Cheap and delicious food - it is a bit confusing the menu because it says ‘fish/meat’ but these are all made of tofu - really good prices as well and big portions

Disappointed - Expected Thai food, but got Chinese food

Summary:
This is not to say that the food wasn't good (it was ok), but simply not what I had hoped.
>>> Would I come back? If I take a train in Bangkok again, for sure. And I strongly recommend getting a smoothie to go (we had mango and coconut and enjoyed them on the train).
>>> Do I recommend coming here without taking a train: If you have never been to Taiwan / eaten Chinese veggie food, maybe. In case you do, definitely not.

Detailed version:
This restaurant is probably the best option for anybody taking a train from Hua Lamphong train station. So five stars for the location (relaxed 10 minute walk from the station to the restaurant).

Food-wise, I live in Taiwan, and may therefore be biased, but for me this was typical Chinese vegetarian food and therefore not special at all. To be fair, this was to be expected since the restaurant name is actually Chinese. But considering how many people in the reviews praised the "authentic Thai food", I had hoped for something else.

We had two rice dishes (I think the curry and tomato rice) and one curry dish, The curry we had, again, tasted exactly like those one can find in any Taiwanese veggie restaurant and not like Thai curry at all.

Pros: Large menu, Tasty smoothies, Non-vegan food is labelled (egg noodles)

Cons: Chinese, not Thai flavour (at least rice dishes)

If you want to experience an authentic Thai meal - this is the place to come!

The food here was great and the restaurant itself had a real authentic feel about it; which is what I was looking for coming to Thailand. The majority of customers in the restaurant were locals; which says it all.

We ordered Fried Chicken, spicy mushroom salad, spicy stir fried duck and chicken and cashews. The fried chicken was unbelievable, and my partner and I both agreed that it was the best vegan fried chicken alternative we have ever tried. The chicken and cashew was fantastic, and came in a very moreish sauce. The spicy mushroom salad was had a great selection of mushrooms and native herbs which I love.

The food did take a long time to come but it is all cooked fresh (as is most food in Thailand), which is the main thing.

Vegetarian or vegan?

They’re advertised as a vegetarian restaurant yet everyone seems confident that they’re being served vegan food, despite owners knowing little English (and customers likely knowing little Thai). They have the “jae”symbol aka vegan symbol, but reviews have reported being served egg. I’m not really sure what’s vegan, but what I ate was good and there’s lots of options.

Pros: Not clear what’s vegan

Based on your review, I asked the staff when we went there two weeks ago. Other than the dishes stating "egg noodles", everything else is supposedly vegan.

Must go if in the area

It‘s soo good for such a low price! The staff are hard-working and they offer such a variety of food and mock fish/meat, it was hard to choose what to eat. I came here twice during my stay in Bangkok because I loved the fried duck, it was so crispy and meaty. Seems like this place is popular among foreigners and locals, it was always full.

Its a nice restaurant

But so many 5 star reviews don‘t set realistic expectations. The staff is really nice, but we had much tastier food for even cheaper prices.

Pros: Helpful staff

Disappointing Experience at Ruyi Vegetarian: Mixed Review Despite High Expectations

Food: 2/5
Service: 2/5
Atmosphere: 2/5
Value for Money: 3/5
Location: 2/5
Extras: 1/5

Given the numerous positive reviews, our expectations were elevated due to the abundance of 5-star ratings. However, it seems we may have had an unfortunate experience with our menu choices, or the regular chef might have been absent during our visit. From our perspective, we cannot recommend this restaurant.

The surroundings of the restaurant gave us the impression of being relatively unkempt.

The "Chinese Iced Tea" had a strong chlorine smell and otherwise lacked any discernible taste.

For starters, we ordered seaweed and vegetarian spring rolls. The seaweed was still frozen and emitted a strong fishy smell, while the spring rolls were doughy and tasteless.

As a main course, we opted for Pad Thai. During our travels in Thailand, we had enjoyed better Pad Thai at other locations.

The service staff did not convey a motivated impression, actively avoiding eye contact.

IMPORTANT: Our aim is by no means to harm restaurants through our reviews. Our primary concern is to share honest opinions to enable a realistic assessment and prevent false expectations for potential guests. This transparency promotes an objective evaluation while simultaneously supporting outstanding performance in the hospitality industry.

Local vibe, excellent food!

Tucked down a street close to Hua Lamphong MRT. Popular with locals when I went, only a few tables and almost full at 6pm.

I had the Deep Fried Spring Rolls (70 THB) and the Tom Yum Soup (80 THB). Both absolutely incredible! The mock meats are something else. The spring rolls are filled with mock meats too making them even better than your usual veggie ones. So cheap too, I’d go back again and again!

Cash only.

Delicious Thai food, best Tom Yum

Ruyi is our go-to option for Thai food, simple and welcoming restaurant, or for take-away, Ruyi never fails to be delicious. The Tom Yum Hed is aroi maak maak, excellent spice. One of (if not THE) best Tom Yum vegan in Thailand. I also would recommend the fried chicken, morning glory, wontos, and fried rice.

Good food for low prices

It’s a bit tucked away in a locals area which might feel a little intimidating as a tourist but the staff were very welcoming and the food was great. Some of the most affordable veggie/vegan food in the area

Pros: Tasty, Cheap!, Friendly staff who spoke English

Cons: Locals area, not many tourists
