Overpriced, underwhelmed

Fare Well was my list of vegan places to try. I REALLY wanted to like it too because Sticky Fingers is wonderful! Alas it came up short. I ordered the Tofu Sweet Potato Curry. It was more peppers and onions with well-hidden sweet potato bits and oversized nondescript tofu squares. For the record, rice is not included with this curry dish. I requested utensils, as stated on the receipt, but they were not provided. The only saving grace was that I could use my $15 credit for Uber towards the meal because it was not worth the $17 before tax, tip, and fees. I finished the meal for obvious reasons but I was disappointed because I had high expectations.

Cons: Expensive

Delicious Vegan Brunch

Great brunch place for a date or group of friends. I’ve been countless times already and have enjoyed everything I’ve ordered so far - burrata, wings, benedict florentine, polenta fries, etc.

Service can be a little slow. Prices are high, but not completely unreasonable for downtown DC. Good size portions. Overall, excellent experience.

Pros: Portion size, Variety of vegan food, Taste

Cons: Slow service, Pricey

Tasty food, super sized portions.

Visiting from out of town and went with family. I’m vegetarian, mom is vegan, and uncle is an omnivore. We all enjoyed our meals and finished the large portions.

Pros: Large portions, Vegan , Low key atmosphere

Cons: Can have limited seating

So many brunch options!

During a short trip to DC, we came to Fare Well for dinner & then returned the next morning for brunch. The highlights for me were the Hot Chocolate - decadent drink! - and Benedict Florentine, especially since it's a rare vegan find! Banana Hazel Pancakes were also a unique treat - super fluffy with chocolate Hazelnut spread that melted like butter! Also unique was the shawarma made with spiced cauliflower instead of the typical gluten-packed seitan. Very fresh! Breakfast sandwich was yummy but could use more Just Egg (or less sausage) cause you really couldn't taste the egg. Cheesy Mac is good but not the best. Tiramisu would probably be better at room temp. It was so cold that it was more pastey than creamy. Staff was friendly and the plethora of options makes it a must visit.

Pros: Variety! Old diner atmosphere. Friendly staff.

Solidly "meh"

I've been here 3 times and have never been impressed. I think that some newer vegans have really low expectations when eating out and don't come across many fully vegan restaurants so they think this place is GREAT....lol. I would tell those people that they should visit other cities (or even a few of the other really good places in DC) and see how good plant-based food can be. Cause this ain't it. If this is your idea of AMAZING food, raise your standards, please.

The fact that this place is so hyped up is disappointing. It gives vegan food a bad name. I mean yeah I'd rather eat here than eat dead animals, but that doesn't mean we can't do better.

Accommodation issues for Deaf goers

Saturday, January 25th at 6 pm. Seven of us, deaf consumers (three of friends from Columbia, Ohio are new Vegan) were looking forward to attending that restaurant again. All of seven us went there during Thanksgiving weekend. It was no problem until last Saturday. They forced us to sit the bar table instead of the tables. We did make a suggestion for the possible two tables together like a table of four and another table for three for face-to-face communication through our American Sign Language. After 45 minutes of waiting, we appalled when we received a message from both hostee and manager that they could not provide accommodations for the table together for seven of us and asked us to get out. Totally unacceptable from the hostee and manager for being discriminated against us. They were disrespectful and unprofessional. We will never go there again. Dismayed and disappointed, Don

Pros: Wonderful foods, Convenient location near the Union Station

Cons: Discriminatory from the host and manager, Long bar table should be removed, needmore tables

Love this place!!

I really love the food here. I respect and appreciate their use of chickpea flour! It makes some of the dishes that much healthier and nutritious. You can feel extra good eating their chickpea wings haha. Great service too. Travis is my favorite waiter here. He is super attentive and personable. Such a good attitude and a hard worker! He was banging out milkshake after milkshake on a busy Friday night, making it look easy! The milkshakes are delicious and beautiful. I can’t wait to try the s’mores shake next time I come.

The chickpea seitan wings are sooo good, they compete with the regular seitan wings I’ve had in Denver that I loved just as much. The sauces are so delicious including the bbq and buffalo wing sauces, then the blue cheese that goes with it. Everything here is vegan so you can relax and try whatever you desire.

Pros: All vegan , Homemade , Delicious

Solid choice

Got the bbq chickn wings and they were amazing, I regret only ordering one. Breaded, crispy with excellent sauce and delicious ranch, pierogis were amazing with fluffy yummy dip, buffalo dip was very good but a little dry, both cookies were yummy, Mac and cheese was mediocre, had better and had worse. And burger was very good! Overall would eat here again !

Pros: Sauces yummy, Chicken wings excellent !!!!!

Cons: Mac and cheese - mediocre

So nice we ate there twice!

This place is so cute and everything we tried on the menu was amazing! Plus, it’s rare to find a vegan restaurant with a full bar and they had some neat specialty drinks.

Pros: Diverse menu, Friendly staff, Based on whole foods instead of mock meats

Great cafe

My wife and I recently had an event in Alexandria and stopped by farewell on our way. It was such an enjoyable experience, I would suggest calling ahead there is typically a wait since the food is so great.

Pros: Tons of vegan desserts, Lots of seating

Superb

All the food was impressive and delicious! Devon was a great waiter too! We had Shiitake salad, buffalo cauliflower dip, mac & cheese, Benedict florentine, chickpea steak, impossible burger and carrot cake pancake and would recommend them all. Really deserves the five stars- highly recommend.

Awful Experience

Sticky Fingers is also owned by the same person

*** Last Update: Final interaction with the owner was being bullied/blackmailed into taking this and any other review down in exchange for replacing my pants. I refused as my morals are worth more than a pair of pants. Yet to receive a refund as promised***

**Update: The owner reached out to ask how to make it right. After waiting over a month for a reply to have a respectful conversation, I was once again ignored and dismissed. The lack of customer service stems from management and it shows. **

The food is over priced at best which I normally wouldn’t mind since it’s all vegan however I was stabbed in the [censored] by the metal chair at our table. Not only did it hurt me but it ripped my pants! Nothing was done, no one has responded to the multiple emails (asked for a manager multiple times and was denied) and FB messages regarding the incident and how it was handled. I wouldn’t suggest going to a place that doesn’t actually care about customers when they claim the opposite. I’ll include the photo of the stabby chair if I can but exclude my rear (you’re welcome).

As for the food, steer clear of the cheesy Mac - it’s not cheesy at all and just orange colored orecchiette. The southern fried wings are dry and only saved by the sauce you choose, the chickpea steak platter is the same dry fried “meat” as the wings however the greens and gravy were flavored well. The Benedict Florentine was just alright, it wasn’t seasoned well at all and the tofu portion was very wet and soggy. After eating at many vegan places, I wouldn’t say the food here stands out. We packed our food to go after the incident, paid the bill (with tip because I’m classy like that) and left.

*can’t give 1 star because HappyCow doesn’t allow it for vegan restaurants

Pros: Vegan restaurant

Cons: Duplicitous , Callous , Greedy

Entry level Vegetarian

Great for someone transitioning into a vegetarian diet but not dissimilar enough to satisfy most vegetarians. Clean and cozy; a great date place where a vegetarian can take a non-vegetarian and both will see it as ok.

So so

Had high expectations after reading the reviews.
My Omni partner and I had the impossible burger which was ok, nothing amazing, after the burger at Galaxy Hut last nite it paled in comparison!
We also had polenta fries which were nice enough but again not amazingly wow. Wish I’d ordered the Mac n cheese instead dammit.
We shared a skillet cookie, the ice cream stayed rock hard and didn’t even start to melt.
Service pretty slowed/uninterested.

Loved this place my first time here!

I had to pick a vegan place after getting in from Phoenix. My sister (an omni), was reluctant to try. We both had the BBQ Bacon Pineapple Beyond Burger and it was DELICIOUS! She was even surprised at how much she liked her burger! Sorry no photo, but we ate the heck out of the food as soon as we got them. Had the rosemary fries also- they were delicious and a bit crispy, not overdone - just right. The fries came out fairly late after the burgers which was odd so I dropped a star only for that. Atmosphere, seating, staff - all fantastic. Would visit again!

Pros: All vegan, Great atmosphere, Welcoming / inclusive 🏳️‍🌈

Yum!!

My boyfriend and I were pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. It was so good! I 10000000% recommend the french toast sticks. They were amazing. The potatoes with gravy were really good as well. The taste reminded me of thanksgiving.

Pros: all vegan, very flavorful, fair prices for the amount of food given

Cons: tight seating arrangement

Tasty

Hi! I came here for bunch with two non vegan friend and my boyfriend whoms vegan. We loved the polenta fries but burnt out mouth which was a bummer for the meal. We all enjoyed our food except my friend that got the breakfast sandwich, it looked really hard to chew and lacked the same wow as the other fresher dishes . Our service was kinda slow , drinks(mimosas) came out the same time as our food .

Pros: Lots of options , Tasty recreations , Affordable

Cons: Some food not flavorful/ fresh , Busy location - REALLY tiny place . , Unable to split the check 4 shared item- petpeeve

Come back soon

The dinner was incredible. Wonderful service from a very attentive and professional server. Room looks small but cozy and great decor😉. The food was amazing! Hands down the best vegan chicken tenders I have ever had. Even my meat-eating friends that I dragged along with me enjoyed them so much. There was too much food and not enough space to fit it all in one sitting but I would go back for more.

Pros: Chicken tenders, Mac n cheese, Take reservations

Cons: Bit pricy, Have to have all guests to be seated

Nice Vegan Option

We came for brunch. Food was okay, lacking a bit in flavor especially for the price. Service was okay and venue was nicely decorated but small.

BRUNCH
Entrees are about $10 - $12
Appetizers are about: $6 - $10
Milkshakes $8
Coffee: $2.50 free refills
Specialty coffee drinks $3.50 - $4.50

What we ordered:

$2.50 Coffee: Delicious diner coffee. Had oat milk and sugar. They had soy, coconut and oat milk available, no vegan creamer.

$4.50 Affogato: This is an espresso and ice cream. The ice cream and espresso tasted average, but the espresso was cold when it was served.

$10 Egg sandwich and roasted potatoes appetizer: Not sure why it was listed as an appetizer. Kind of disappointed. I can make it better at home. I couldn't taste the vegan cheese, the seitan had just an okay flavor, the English muffin wasn't that great and the egg actually tasted a bit chickpea-ish.

$12 Benedict: Again disappointed. The sauce was not very good. The tofu egg was just okay and overall not a good flavor profile.

Roasted potatoes: they were cooked well but very bland. It would be nice if they were flavored with herbs and garlic. Our server gave us garlic aoli to dip the potatoes in which helped with the bland flavor but the aoli was still bland.

I think they have gravy even though I didn't see it on the menu. I was sad after I got my meal bc I love gravy.

Service: Hostess was not very friendly and when we asked about a wait time for a table she responded that she doesn't know when people will be done eating their food but probably soon... She clearly wanted us to sit at the counter rather than do any work. We ended up sitting at the counter and had a friendly server.

We travel a lot and have tried a lot of vegan type diners like this and few actually deliver. Overall this place is average. Really good diner coffee though. Difficult to find gluten free options, junk food vegan. Price is average, we paid $30 for two meals and two drinks. We left full. We would probably try other places in the area before thinking about returning.

I think, like many other vegans, we are often disappointed by places like this because we have had to cook our own food for years and can make better food than a lot of places we visit. We are still happy there are vegan restaurants, we just wish they'd try a bit harder.

Cons: Meals were disappointing
