Soul Vegan - Edit
The deli style ordering wasn’t the most convenient for someone who wanted to sit and enjoy a meal. Once I stood in line for about ten minutes, I placed my order and waited in a corner for my name to be called out. So it’s not really a restaurant I’d call, more of a fast food serving atmosphere. The food I ordered was wonderful. I got the Cajun pasta. I would have made it way spicer, but I rarely ever find a place spicy enough for me. The smoothie was also tasty and would recommend the food to anyone looking. The ambiance was welcoming. Typically I was to walk into an establishment and I would be the only non melanin dominant being, my empathetic vibrations would tense up from the stares and tension. Here was not the case. No one saw me as an intruder or a threat. As it should be.
Read morePros: Great energy, Good food, Lots of items I was wanting to try
Cons: Not a sit and serve type of place, Would have loved some sort of sampler entree, Music was too loud and most of it neg vibration

I expected better - Edit
We drove almost an hour just to try this place , the lady at the register was not very helpful, I’m not sure if everything is supposed to be boxed to go, but we said we were eating there and we got our food in boxes . I also asked for Mac n cheese instead of fries and got fries . As much as I wanted to love the food it was not very good , the nachos were soggy, and the burger was super greasy, not horrible , but not what I had expected at all. This place would be great if it was half the price . Drinks were good but the lemonade is 8$ , Smoothies are 9$! We ended up spending 50$ for two semi meals, if you count nachos as a meal, and two drinks... I’m not saying don’t give this place a shot, I like to believe in second chances . Maybe the cashier was just having a bad day but I had wished she was more attentive and didn’t mess up our order .

Words can’t describe how the cauliflower steak changed my life. Everything on the platter was amazing, but I wish I could’ve tried the jackfruit ribs & oyster mushrooms at the same time.

This place is Top Notch authentic and delicious - Edit
Been vegan for 20 years now so I've eaten vegan food throughout the world. Soul Food Vegan has to be the tastiest place I've ever visited. First off its not just soul food but it is also authentic Creole dishes and in my travels I have never enjoyed a vegan creole dish. Its hard to achieve because creole food has flavor that is unmatched. Somehow they got it right. I ordered everyday of my visit in Houston. The staff is very fun, light hearted, and family vibe. Don't go there expecting some fru fru pretentious wannabe vegan restaurant. They are all about the good quality food, good vibes, and just all around good time. The place is very authentically Houston located in the newly gentrified 3rdWard. I like them because they still work with the community. They are not just there to take your money. I've tried other vegan spots in houston and so far none of them compare.

- that I really appreciate: you have multiple meat substitutes, the place is 100% tofu free and that's major for me I wish other establishments would catch up.
-Tastes like home cooking
-flavor explodes in your mouth
-No matter how busy or packed they are the food comes out in a timely manner
Pros: Food, Staff, Genuine establishment

Deserves a 1 star. - Edit
Rude staff. Over priced. You'd think a vegan "soul" food place would have kind people working there. Tried to order and when I asked if that was enough for 4 people she rolled her eyes at me. She wasn't able to tell us prices, and just pointed to a chalk board menu and when I told her that I couldnt see them clearly cause the chalk is smudged she said she couldnt help me. My total ended up being $136, and when I asked what was so expensive, she said she could charge my card and then print out a receipt which would show me. Like what? Why would I pay for something when I dont know what's so expensive! Turns out the strawberry lemonade is $8! And was $32 for 4 people! And they dont see anything else! She told me she couldnt even give me a water cup. We ended up leaving and going to pepper tree, about 10 minutes away, with a vegan buffet, nicer people, better food, and cheaper options.

This place was good but overpriced. We ordered the platter, boudin balls and lemonade for $40. The dirty rice was horrible and looked more like stuffing than rice, the boudin balls were just fried dirty rice and weren’t good at all. Everything else was just okay and just wish they wouldn’t use so much plastic or styrofoam.

Neutral Vibes - Edit
We went on a somewhat busy day, so I'm not sure if our experience is the one to base any decisions on, but our visit was disappointing. They were out of water, so we had to pay $9 for smoothies, which we didn't enjoy the flavor of. They also forgot to give us our drinks in the first place, so we had to bother the staff for them. We tried a few pasta dishes; I didn't really like the mac 'n cheese or the pasta melt. Both were kind of dry and not very flavorful. The alfredo was okay but not excellent. My food partner had a burger, which was only okay as well. The fries weren't great. I had been excited to try this place, so I was pretty bummed out. I am giving it a mid-star review because maybe I went on an off day. I would give it one more shot.

Tough one to grade - Edit
I’ve yet to come across a place that has so many negatives. I’ll keep them to a bare minimum so I can focus on some positives. I found being in the place to be totally offensive. There was a video playing while I was eating there with crude language and racist jokes. There were children there as well. Can’t imagine why it would be playing. As a white Person, I was totally offended. So if I would ever return, I would do take out. I ordered the oyster mushroom platter. Ugh. Rubbery and flavorless Tried the cauliflower and it too was over cooked and a half stalk ugh. I did however love their Mac and cheese. One of the best I have ever had and their rice was great. The guys were really nice and super helpful. They saved the rating from a one star.

Vegan junk (soul) food - Edit
First, it's great that this restaurant is serving the emerging vegan market! Personally, though, my transition to vegan also meant that I would focus on high quality, healthy food. This restaurant seems true to its name insofar as the food seems to focus on the soul and not the body. Everything that I had was really second-rate from a healthy food standard. E.g., the fried mushrooms were incredibly greasy, as was the Cajun burger that was served on a white wheat bun (not whole grain). The french fries to accompany my burger were also greasy and not even good. They don't have any fresh-brewed tea, which is a staple in Houston especially during hot months, but they e.g., bottles of ginger tea sweetened with so much nectar (of something) that it made me gag. Finally, the place is way too small (it's extremely cramped) and the kitchen is very slow (like they only have one cook). For me it's not worth the drive to get there.

Cons: Menu not focus on healthy dishes, Cramped inside and out (in the parking lot), Slow kitchen

I’ve tried quiet a few dishes here and they are all fantastic. It tastes like a home cooked meal more than food from a restaurant, which is a huge plus in my book.

Vegan Southern comfort soul food - Edit
100% vegan restaurant dishing up delicious southern comfort in ample sized portions at reasonable prices in Houston's historic 3rd ward. Across from Emancipation Park, just southeast of downtown. Free parking in small lot, and on surrounding streets. Compact venue, service spotty when busy. Highly recommend the sampler platter; Mac & cheese, dirty rice, collard greens, & cauliflower balls; well seasoned, though the greens were a bit salty to my taste. Creamy pasta Alfredo, gumbo were both good. We arrived late in the day so they were out of boudin balls. Platter served in styrofoam container, plastic utensils; ok my California sustainable self is showing...
