Something new to try

While ive had mochi before, I understand that manju is slightly different and I'd never had one before visiting this store. Overall it's a 3.5 stars for me. It's certainly better than the grocery store mochi with red bean paste. I liked the rice flour ones better than cake ones. The green tea one did not really taste of green tea. Ive gone to this place once before and they were all sold out at that time, so if you want to sample, make sure to call ahead and place an order.

Pros: Plenty of vegan options, Vegan items clearly marked on their fb page

Cons: Need to call ahead else may not get what you want

Soft, Chewy Manju Snacks

Manju are soft, pillowy flour desserts that are similar to mochi (but swap out the rice for flour). You often find them in Japanese confectionary shops or markets, but they're almost never fresh. Here's where Shuei-Do delivers and they deliver it very, very well.

Manju is naturally vegan friendly so there were a lot of options to choose from while we waited. They had a whole range of fillings from azuki red beans to matcha. You can choose a few ($2 each) to fill a tray and they'll be ready in less than 10 minutes.

OMG, each of the ones we ordered were simply divine. So incredibly fluffy and much fresher than the mochi or manju you'd find in the market. The little bit of powdered sugar on top adds to the overall aesthetics too.

These are also not super sweet - Japanese desserts don't tend to be as sweet as western goods, but are just as tasty. If you have some time, it's definitely worth the wait to enjoy fresh manju here in Japantown.

Pros: Great bargain for fresh manju, Many vegan friendly options

Amazing Traditional Mochi

The BEST mochi in San Jose. If you’ve never experienced Mochi this is the place to start. They have about 25 options available. If you’re just starting out I recommend the Habutai and the Green Tea flavor, as these are the most “traditional” variants of mochi and a good gateway.

Or you can do what we did our first time and get a variety pack!

We call ahead at least a day in advance to put our order in. Their menu is available on their Instagram and their Facebook Page.

Prepare to be addicted!

Pros: The vast majority of their mochi is vegan, Super friendly staff, Can order ahead to avoid lines

Cons: Only 4 days a week
