Pure water... more like pure winner! - Edit
For those who don't know Japanese, "shimizu" translates roughly to pure water.
Read moreWent here on a Saturday night for dinner with my non-veg sister. She pointed this place out to me in particular because it had a large number of noodle dishes that were able to be veg*nised. Note that the prices aren't actually on website's menu but the noodle dishes range from about $13 to $17. Main meals/dons are a bit more expensive, probably ranging from about $15 to $18 maybe? Bentos are $27 but quite large. Most of the serving sizes are decent in fact, so not bad for the price.
Was craving something deep-fried so ordered the veganised version of tempura udon. Tempura was beautifully crisp with decent sized cuts of veggies. The udon stock was noticeably shiitake flavoured... a bit sweet actually, which fooled me at first into thinking it was bonito stock. The shiitake mushrooms topping the udon had that canned taste, but I didn't mind this because it didn't spoil the flavours or anything like that.
Mochi was excellent! Particularly the sakura flavoured one, as the sakura leaf that the mochi was wrapped in was soaked in cherry liqueur and had a sweet aftertaste. Don't make the mistake of trying to eat it like we did though!
Sis and I were discussing a rating for this restaurant and at the time I couldn't figure out why I wouldn't give this place more than 75%. Now that I'm writing the review, I think the reason is because although there are veg options, the original menu items are not designed with veg*ns in mind. Thus the veg*n options lack a bit of creativity in that they're essentially the non-veg options with the non-veg components taken out but nothing to replace it. In saying that, if creativity is not a priority for you and you're just looking for some hearty reliable Japanese, this place is a winner.
Pros: If you like noodles, lots of veganisable options
Cons: Veg options lack creativity
