Vegetarian menu discontinued - Edit
No longer offering the separate vegetarian menu. Everything just on one meat based menu. They'll make it vegetarian (braised tofu or fried rice) but the woman didn't seem pleased when I showed her the online vegetarian menu

Many vegan and vegetarian options - Edit
There is a special vegetarian menu accessible via QR code which can be displayed in English. There are no explicit vegan vs vegetarian labels, but the dish names are very descriptive so it's fairly easy to tell what is likely to be non-vegan. The staff member I interacted with spoke excellent English. The dishes themselves were tasty but plain.

Pretty good - Edit
The family that owned it were super nice, we came in after they opened and they turned the lights on and let us order anyway. They have a QR code english vegetarian menu which is super handy. The fern greens was a nice salad, mushrooms and tofu dish was nice. Not amazing food but good.

Veggie options but be careful - Edit
Food was nice but on the expensive side compared to other meals we’ve had in Taiwan. We ordered off of the vegetarian menu and two of the dishes initially came out with meat in them, but they did quickly swap these when I said I was vegan - would just double check when ordering

Very welcoming and lovely tofu dishes - Edit
We were welcomed in and found a separate vegetarian menu available by scanning the QR code stuck to the table. There was a nice variety of tofu dishes and you can order a small or large portion, although it didn't feel like there was a huge difference between the two when they arrived. Both were big!
Read moreWe went for tofu in black bean sauce (small) and mapo tofu (large) with rice and a small spring onion omelette. The omelette was excellent and tasted really good mixed in with the rice and black bean sauce.
Both tofu dishes were very nice, with the mapo tofu giving a reassuring fizz on the tongue as we ate.
The rice portions weren't huge, but at only 10 dollars it was very easy to order an extra portion. I think we ordered a good amount of food for two people.
Pros: Black bean tofu, Omelette

Not bad - Edit
I got the tie ban tofu and some mushrooms. The mushrooms were good but the tofu was just ok. There is a vegetarian menu in English but the vegan items are not labeled clearly.

Friendly. Don’t miss the fern salad! - Edit
A small, casual, friendly place where we ate two nights in a row. Host very welcoming. Some dishes a little bland eg tofu in black bean sauce. Others really excellent eg king oyster mushrooms with basil and the fern salad (don’t miss it - the dressing is fantastic). Mapo tofu good - on the spicier side. Make sure you ask for the separate vegetarian menu - everything other than the omelettes is vegan. Water only, although people brought their own drinks. Opening hours are flexible - usually closes around 8pm but dependant on how many customers there are so could be earlier or later.

Very pleasant and COMPLETELY VEG - Edit
We came here hungry after a magnificent bike ride and we weren’t disappointed. The service was extremely friendly and fast. The noodle soups were really tasty and great value at NT$80. Our vegetarian son demolished the dried radish omelette which must have had at least 4 eggs. My partner and I, both vegan, shared portions of the handmade mapo tofu and the stir friend king oyster mushrooms. The flavor was great in both - each dish had quite a lot of ginger, the mushrooms had beautiful fresh basil and the chili in the tofu was not overpowering. We rolled out of there with our wallets NT$760 lighter - not the cheapest meal to be had in taiwan, but very affordable compared to home, and absolutely worth it.

Lots of vegan dishes - Edit
This restaurant has a very good range of vegetarian dishes, most of which are vegan. They have a separate vegetarian menu (in Chinese and English) with lots of vegetable dishes, as well as tofu dishes, rice, noodles, and soups.
Read moreAs others have said, the food is quite simple and the portions generous. The tofu dishes all use silken tofu, which I’m not such a fan of, and I found the ones I tried (the sizzling tofu and the tofu in black bean sauce) a bit bland.
The vegetable dishes were much better, with flavourful crunchy vegetables. The fern salad with a mustardy dressing was really excellent – definitely worth trying!
Pros: Lots of vegan options, Great vegetable dishes, Fern salad is amazing!
Cons: Tofu dishes a bit bland

As for April 2018, it is still open. Very good local food. Portions are big - be mindful of this and do not order too much. I ordered two dishes and left almost half of each.

Good surprise in such a touristic spot - Edit
The place is very simple but the food is really fresh and good. The 'meatballs' in the soup were amazing. Plus, the price is good for being such a touristic place. They have a notebook with all the menu translated in english so it's great.

Basic, friendly restaurant - Edit
Although no English menu was available and neither of the staff spoke more than a few words of English, our server (and chef) was eager to help and make recommendations. We ended up with a bowl of hot noodles each and a plate of tasty morsels made from mushrooms, tofu, gluten and beans, accompanied by a chilli sauce. It was all very tasty and excellent value.

One of the many small vegetarian restaurants - Edit
Even in rather small places there are vegetarian restaurants in Taiwan. I was eating the other day at this place, next to the Visitor Center of Shueishe in Yuchih Township, where the bus stop for Sun Moon Lake is.
Read moreEven if you only speak like 5 words of Chinese as I do, you can order. At least one of their menu cards is in English. Grab it on the table and write down on a piece of paper what you want to eat.
I had a soup with rice and the small cabbage dish. The cabbage was very delicious. The soup had some tasty crunchy-like things in it and lot's of rice of course. The broth wasn't that tasty though - to add something salty helps.
I payed for each dish NT$ 100.
Sun Moon Lake is very touristy and therefore rather "expensive" compared to other places in Taiwan.
Since this restaurant doesn't close the door it can get kind of chilly on a January evening to sit there: bring your jacket and a sweather ;)
It seems to be ok to bring your own drink with you at cheap places when they don't sell beverages in Taiwan as far as I noticed.
Please note, that the 3rd shop on the left, counted from the visitor center (Wu Sho Si Hai is the second one), also has the chinese charakters 附設素食 written in green on the sign (the last two are for vegetarian food). Google translate shows "vegetarian attached" for this combination (please correct it, if it's wrong).
They have a couple of vegetarian dishes, but there is also meat served. There is an English menu available but it is not complete as I found out.
The nice thing was, at this place they can close the door.
At the moment in January it is like 17°C/63°F during the day, but at night it gets well below 10°C/50°F.
If you like a sweet fruits dessert, I can recommend to buy an Atemoya (don't confuse it with the sugar-apple!)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atemoya
at one of the different fruit places at the same street (I payed NT$ 70 for one). If it's kind of soft, it's ready to eat. Just peel it with a knive and eventually cut it They might do it for you when you buy it. You also can cut it in half to eat the inside with a spoon.
My second favorite ist passion fruit (cut it in half and eat with a spoon) and ripe Guava.
Pros: English menu, quite delicious, close to bus stop in Shueishe

Better Than Expected! - Edit
We had dinner in this small restaurant, it has red letters on yellow ground as a sign saying vegetarian. They open at 5pm for dinner - until about 8 pm - and for lunch probably as well. We had the 3 dish 1 soup set for two (400ntd) which was enough. [09:46, 12/27/2014] Clary: The dishes included tofu & edamame beans in a little spicy sauce, stir fried cabbage and sweet potato leaves (I fell in love with the latter - they tasted like baby spinach which is quite rare in Asia!). It came with rice. The miso soup with coriander leaves was a bit boring in the beginning but we asked for some soy sauce and then it was fine :)
Read more[09:48, 12/27/2014] Clary: Everything was quite tasty. They have an english menu and one younger women can speak some as well, so it's no problem if you don't speak Chinese.

It helps if you know Mandarin. - Edit
It's a very casual restaurant that seems to be mom & pop owned with an old man serving as the waiter (You should find him planted in front of the restaurant just 1 store away from the Visitor Center) and an old lady doing the cooking in the back. Most dishes (rice and noodles) seem to range from 100-200 NWD (around $3-6 USD)with multiple people orders at a higher price. The menu was completely in chinese and you could just write down your order if you're like me speaks Cantonese and not Mandarin. I think if you don't speak Chinese at all and feeling a bit adventurous, you should still be ok. There seems to be no drinks available so I don't know if it's alright to BYO or you'll just have until you finished to get something from the various vendors a few shops away. I thought my noodle was slightly bland but the portion was quite large and filled with various veggies. There's also no air condition but then lots of restaurants don't seem to have them either.
