Delicious and relaxing

Had the noodle lunch dish. Soba noodles, tempura veg, salad, and dashi broth. Tea at start and soba water at end. A very nice setting. You need to book for lunch or dinner via the Visit Kinosaki website (under the vegetarian dining section). The food was light but very tasty.

One of the finest meals of my life

Eating vegan in Kinosaki Onsen isn’t cheap. But my experience at Sanpou Nishimuraya is one of the finest dining experiences of my life.

We were treated to an eight course vegan degustation of locally sourced organic ingredients. The highlight was, surprisingly enough, charcoal grilled vegetables that the chef prepared on the central grill in front of us. The vegetables soaked in the flavours and aromas of the charcoal, and when mixed with the side of soy sauce, fresh miso paste and sea salt, the flavours became complex and surprising. You’d have never expected grilled vegetables to be this good.

Runner up best dish goes to the Onigiri with unrefined soy glaze. The attendant explained (in Japanese) that the onigiri was made from 38 different strains of rice and explained the origins. This, plus the soy sauce, created a complex and complete flavour.

Overall the vegetarian (which is also vegan) course didn’t feel like an afterthought or like it was pandering to tourists. It felt like a considered celebration of vegetables and how they can be the star of the show.

I struggle to find a con for this restaurant outside of the price. But even then, I feel like it’s absolutely worth it. I feel like in the future this restaurant will appear in the Michelin guide

Note: If other customers order the meat degustation you will likely see the meat being grilled in front of you. This isn’t a consideration for me, but it might be for you.

Pros: Luxurious feel, Organic fresh ingredients , Complex flavours
