Hello Shinyclefairy,
Read moreMy name is Julie and I work with HappyCow's editing team. Thank you so much for the information that Rip's Malt Shop is permanently closed, I've updated the listing. If you find other problems with HappyCow listings in the future (closures, hours, offerings), please do send an official update form so our editing team will be sure to see it, as we do not always see reviews. 😄 Thank you so much for your help!

Delicious NYC classics made vegan - Edit
Yum!!! So excited to finally try this place. We got the chopped cheese (made with Beyond meat) and BEC (made with just egg patty). Both were delicious!! Cool spot with a large outdoor space for warmer weather.
Read moreStaff was super nice and helpful, and they were more than happy to put our order in our own containers (we try to reduce our waste this way when places don't have reusable plateware).
Will definitely be back!
Pros: Great food, Great staff

What a lovely experience! Not only did these guys make me the most delicious chopped cheese ever, they also gave me great recommendations for where to eat for the rest of my time in NYC! I love that they were so happy to promote other small vegan businesses. Such lovely guys, such great food 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I was recommended the chopped cheese and it did not disappoint. This place also satisfied all my milkshake cravings! They also have a backyard that you can sit in privately with your friends. Great experience 🥰

No stabilizers! (except in some condiments) - Edit
For a young business, Rip's is doing a great job dealing with rushes of orders. They use a third-party delivery system, which has its own issues. I tried to order delivery on a windy day and got a message that delivery was not available to my area after having ordered for delivery in the past. It was just as well walking a mile to the restaurant and having warm food in front of me within a half hour.
Read moreThe best part about Rip's is that none of the burgers or cheese have xanthan gum, carrageenan or any of those laxative-like stabilizers that take the joy out of vegan food. Some of the condiments have it, though. You have to ask because I don't remember which.
Oh yeah, and they make the BEST vegan shakes, imo. Fresh-tasting, limited-ingredient Van Leeuwen vegan ice cream with a little texture and not overly sweet, it's the perfect dessert after a burger and fries.
For a once-in-a-while treat, Rip's is my go-to comfort source. Too bad it's fattening or I'd be eating there every week.
Rip's is also conscious of the environment and of the use of plastics. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals can leach from plastics into our food and drinks and go into our bodies! ...and then into our water supply when it goes in the trash. So, don't get a lid if you're eating in. And kindly refuse the fork if you're getting delivery.
Pros: No processed stabilizers, Tasty, Fresh
Cons: Third-party delivery changed the service area, Fattening, Burgers are messy

Mediocre - Edit
Ordered the meal for 3pm, arrived at 12pm. It was sent back with the driver as I was not home. When the order did arrive, it was luke warm. When restaurant was called to let them know, they gave the excuse that the driver had other orders that was probably delivered earlier causing the food to be luke warm.

Loved it. Went when they first opened. We tried the Coney Island and Chicago dogs - both were soooo good!! The macaroni and potato salads were on point.

Milkshake was amazing - Edit
Had a "bacon cheeseburger" which was excellent and one of the best vegan milkshakes I've ever had (coffee malt with house made cookie crumbles on top). Husband, an omni, thoroughly enjoyed his meal as well. Total for two burgers and two shakes was about $40, so not somewhere to eat often (if I lived here), but it was great for our vacation in NYC.

Slow service, tasty food - Edit
We waited about 20 mins for two sandwiches and a milkshake. But I had the ‘tuna melt’ and it tasted good. Tater tots were a little soggy, but overall, ok.

A very welcome addition to Fort Greene - Edit
I love that they use beyond meat for their burgers. My favorites so far are the Chopped Cheese Sandwich, the Rip’s burger, the loaded potato salad, and the oat milk milk shake. I look forward to trying the other items on the menu in the near future.

Tastes Just Like the Real Thing! - Edit
Context: I am not a true vegan, but I'm slowly converting. Rip's has given me the security of knowing I will never have to miss real hamburgers again. You can add lots of toppings just like at Five Guys, and you can also put them on tater tots (get the cheese sauce- it's just like real nacho cheese!). Same with the milkshakes, which you can add mix-ins to. Great backyard to hang in, and they serve beer and wine. Also got delivery from them once and it was still great! I'll be a regular for sure.
