I’ve been eating Rios food since they started and I love it. They have a new stand on Mai street downtown that has new options available that I’m really enjoying. I prefer the open faced triangle things to the empanadas personally.
Read moreI like the new 1mil basil only mini pizza. My hack is to take them home to add a couple toppings and dinner is done. Fast n cheap. What a great idea for them to open the stand. Before every grocery store was sold out by 11am. I prefer for not to support the local grocery stores with their high margins.
Also love that you put out salsa that I can add. That’s the best. Please don’t up the prices like everyone else does :)

You HAVE to go to Rio’s Vegan food. I’m so grateful that this place exists. We bought a few different vegan empanadas and they were delicious. We also tried the pain au chocolat and they were just as we remembered them from being vegetarian. Honestly, just go here. It’s incredible!

Their hours aren’t completely set yet but we were told they open around 9-9:30am Monday-Friday until they finish everything. Saturday they are at the market and Sunday they are closed. I tried a chocolate croissant and a passion fruit croissant. Both were 👌🏼. I had a spicy empanada with a side of this spicy sauce the woman recommended to me as well as a piece of pizza. It’s great if you need something quick and on the go. Staff was so kind and provided recommendations. We picked up parmigiana we haven’t cooked up yet but we can’t wait.

You MUST try their jackfruit salad (it’s served as a burger). Their empanadas are delicious and also available in a few shops near Cahuita and Puerto Veijo (example: Super Negro). We really liked their focaccia, the cheese was not made from cashews but from coconut. We were just not a big fan of the nuggets, they were a bit dry, but their mayo made up for that! In short, go find them on the Saturday market in Puerto Viejo!

Despues de leer las reseñas, fui en busca del puesto de Rios Vegan en el mercado del sábado. La focaccia y la lasaña de berenjenas están muy buenas y las empanadillas son esponjosas y con sabor. La ensalada de jackfruit y el bannana bread no me encantaron, pero si no puedes ir el sábado sin duda vale la pena pasar entre semana (los lunes no hay) por alguno de los puntos de venta de las empanadillas para comer algo rápido y rico.

Wow!! We were so blessed and grateful to have found this wonderful and lovely couple in Puerto Viejo. We were looking for vegan food and we stumbled upon Rios Vegan Food and contacted the owners. They replied within minutes and it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. They have items for sale at some of the local shops and they are at the Saturday Market in town but they also do orders for pickup. We took advantage and ended up ordering from them at least a dozen times while we were there. We ordered empanadas of all flavors including our favorite mushroom, zucchini and béchamel sauce, the curry chickpea, and the eggplant. But every single one was amazing and the filling and dough was perfection. We also loved their gnocchi which was gluten free and made from yucca! So delicious! We even got inspired and made some at home hoping to recreate the experience. They offer all types of dishes and platters even burgers, salads, tortillas, desserts and lots of authentic Italian meals like eggplant Parmesan and lasagna. And every single thing they do is so incredible that you always want more. They are truly passionate about good food and people and it’s obvious in everything from the presentation to the portions to the very reasonable and affordable prices! They are a beautiful couple inside and out and we were so lucky to have met them and to have experienced their cooking. They are kind, genuine, warm and definitely cook with love! I only wish they shipped internationally! Thank you for everything and we wish you tremendous success and hope to see you soon! Don’t miss out. So so so good. I went to their stall at the Saturday farmers market and was definitely not let down. I tried the Bean and carrot sauce taco, the empanada and the zucchini/ cheese pastry. They were all so great but the Zuchinni cheese was probably our favorite. Love the owners too, they were so sweet and happy. This is a MUST TRY if your coming through town- love supporting these types of businesses.
