Tasty Japanese food

Everything was good here. We ordered a ton of food and it was well worth it. Kinda pricy but good for special occasions.

Great Japanese food

We stopped in for a great meal. Karaage, miso glazed tofu, pickles, kakiage and chamomile panna cotta for dessert.

Nice spot

The lobster udon special and hojicha latte were really good. Tofu Katsu and giant tots I could’ve done without. Food came out quickly after ordering.

Great Food and Service

The food was really great and so was the service. We felt bad coming in about a half hour before closing but we were still treated very nicely. Daemyn was friendly and kind.

My girlfriend got the Curry Udon, and I got the Katsu Curry Meal

- ginger pistachio miso onigiri - great 8.5/10
- okonomiyaki - excellent 10/10, very unique

Fully vegan place! One piece of the only vegan Japanese places I've been to where the food was just like the vegan food in japan

Good Japanese

Tried the tofu katsu sandwich with side potato salad. Potato salad was excellent. The sandwich was a little under seasoned and would have been great with a Japanese mayo and a sprinkle of sea salt. The kale and seaweed salad on the burger was lemony and light. The bun I think was made out brown rice .

Pros: Good cocktails, Friendly service , Nice space

Cons: Small portions , Expensive

Exceptional on all the levels

We so enjoy this sweet place--it's exceptional on all the levels. First, the food is just so delicious and well-crafted. And then there is the service and the vibe: it elevates every visit from the sweet lust of the mouth/belly to the warmth of heart bliss. Choose anything that calls you from the menu--you can't go wrong! We'll be back as soon as we find Portland under our feet again!

Like being in Japan!

Tons of Japanese flavor! Friendly staff. They ferment a bunch of their own food, including all their miso. Creative flavors and plenty of options.

Pros: All vegan, Friendly staff, Great tastes

Creative Japanese

If you are looking for typical Japanese fare found in most US restaurants - this is not that. If you are looking for creative comfort food — this is your place! Lots of healthy choices and interesting flavors. Interesting specials along with a nice selection of regular items.

mixed reviews/ hard vibes

I think the food was 'fine' nothing I would ever seek again.
What's odd to me was the hard vibes. I saw these two when they were at the Gresham festival, a food truck in Portland weekly and always encouraged others to try them, and gave positive vibes before the brick n mortar. This was strange. We got hard vibes, but it was selective, as she would go around to other tables to good vibe and then kind of scowl at us. We were unwanted guests, maybe it was that we were with a child and they don't want kids in their cafe. I can't really say.
The $10 cheezcake was not good. The nettle gyoza had positive review from those at the table. My dish was weak, but food for face.
meh

Pros: vegan, location

Cons: hard vibes, cheezcake, the rice ball i had was meh

Heavenly vegan Japanese food

I've been waiting YEARS to visit Obon Shokudo as I haven't been to Portland since they opened. I love ramen and sushi is fine but I've longed for a wider selection of vegan Japanese food and those are almost always the only two things I can find. I finally got to visit Obon Shokudo and it didn't disappoint. My husband and I split the combo (with the addition of two extra onigiri) and everything was sooo good. My favorites were the curried korroke, the potato salad, and the yuzu onigiri. I also got a seasonal namazake flight that was phenomenal, and their current seasonal dessert: matcha Sakura panna cotta. The panna clouds was a feast for the senses, beautifully presented in a glass cloche and absolutely delicious. We'll be in Portland for less than a week but I've already told my husband we're going back before we leave!

Not for us.

We tried this restaurant after seeing a few really good reviews on youtube. We were greeted and sat quickly. The menu can be ordered through a QR code. It was busy and stayed busy while we were there.

We got the food items shown below and the texture was not it for me. The mixed green salad and dressing were really good so we got a regular sized salad after trying it as a side. We didn’t finish any of the other food items. Really none of them taste good to us.

Pros: Clean, Fast, Salad

Cons: The food

I enjoyed it

This was the first food stop on my portland visit. I enjoyed the rice roll (I forget what it’s called) I got and the croquettes. The ramen, in my opinion, could have been better. It tasted good but I would of liked it to be more flavorful. The portion size was also a little small for the price. I’d definitely like to visit here again and try other things.

100% Vegan Restaurant!

Obon Shokudo offers a rarity in the Portland dining scene--100% vegan Japanese fare. While the majority of the food may be a bit salty & fried for my taste, I appreciate their seasonal focus & the opportunity to try dishes I simply can't find elsewhere. I look forward to visiting occasionally.

Agree that some of their stuff really is salty, but I appreciate the selection nonetheless

Definitely! I need to give them another try, as vegan Japanese is hard to come by in Portland.

Pleasantly surprised vegan Japanese food

This is my first time here the food looks great authentic seeming Japanese vegan food. try multiple dishes to get a feel of the menu. We really liked it from the appetizer type tofu dish that wasn’t on the menu but was recommended by the server to that different. Vegan gluten-free dishes. Everything seems good.

Great service and food

We asked for recommendations and were not disappointed. We had the onigiri with garlic, Aleppo, and pickled carrot/ginger. We had the tater tots w dill side salad, the potato, and the leek soup. We also got the chocolate amaretto cheesecake and loved it. My sister left her water bottle and they kindly gave us a call so we could grab it. They also gave us recommendations for 3 other vegan restaurants which were amazing too. Would return and recommend!

Comforting and Filling

Everything I've had here has been amazing. It's a nice cozy vibe. I always order too much and make (allow) my poor partner finish off my order. Everyone please think of their sacrifice in these trying times. #Veganuary

Pros: Udon, Onigiri, Atmosphere
