Brunch and dinner

We arrived when they opened for brunch at 10 and there were maybe 4 other people waiting in the cold. Not bad compared to the lines I had been hearing about. The service was great, super friendly and attentive. The food was out of sight. I had the croque madame which was one of the best vegan breakfast meals I've ever had.
My partner's dish(the slam platter) was actually a bit cool, I think they made hers first. But it was still delicious. Plenty of coffee refills too!

My only complaint is my expectation of a "diner" is usually cheaper and more diverse fair -- see Chicago Diner. So I'm not a fan of the name, but whatever, the food is amazing.

**update for dinner**
I'm still debating if it was worth the 2 hour wait. Fortunately neither my partner or I were that hungry or else we would have bailed at the hour mark and went somewhere else. Personally I think the host was to blame in managing the list. They told everyone it would be 45 minutes. But everyone in line was so grumpy it really set the tone for a negative experience.
That being said, I had the NY strip and my partner had the reuben. The strip was a huge portion, definitely great value. It came on a large portion of garlic mashed potatoes with string beans and carrots. It was very delicious. However, it you really have to like seitan to enjoy it, because that's all it is. Just a huge slab of grilled setan. Very filling.
The reuben was the best I've ever had -- a lot of people made one these days. And it came with a boatload of fries.
We were too full for dessert or else we would have got the sunday. Though we were disappointed that they didn't have any pies like the classic diners I'd go to growing up.
The service still held up at dinner. Even though the wait to get in was almost 2 hours, the food and drinks all came out pretty fast.

great brunch spot

Cozy diner feel, but modern. Loved the classic music and animal art on the walls. Blown away by the food

mind blowing

A friend and I split the NY strip and Fish and Chips. The steak was so juicy and the fish was flaky and amazing. Doug McNish is a wizard.

Not Doug's Finest Hour

We went here for the first time last night. The food was exceedingly bland. The soy buffalo wings starter was very tasty, but the "Salisbury Steak" was mushy and not great. The special was a "Chickun Pot Pie". It tasted like nothing. We had the apple crumble for dessert. While the ice cream was very tasty we didn't see a single piece of apple in it. To finish it all off, my brother got me a gift certificate which the restaurant couldn't find, then we got hassled by the waitress for the tip as we got ready to leave.

Pros: Buffalo Wings, Atmosphere

Cons: Bland food, Ambivelent to hostile staff

inconsistent

I've tried a few things here and re-tried them again only to have two different experiences. The steak was good the first time, then dry and tough the second. The French onion soup was a bit bland and nothing special. The calamari were really good especially if you squeeze lemon on them. The blooming onion was boring and are really just a vehicle for whatever sauce you dip it in. The kale salad was good but not special. I want to like this place so will continue to try new dishes.

Cons: some items are pricey

A Vegandale gem!

Parkdale is fast becoming the place to find excellent vegan everything! Steaks, salads, sandwiches, wine! Delicious food and proof that vegans don’t live solely on green smoothies.

Creative Plant Based Cuisine in a Modern Atmosphere

This restaurant is a blast! Nice atmosphere, delicious and creative dishes, good drinks. Have been there twice and extremely pleased. Food was served in generous portions and staff were very friendly and helpful. Doug McNish is a wonderful chef who thinks outside of the box. We have had the Salisbury Steak, Reuben, and Meat Loaf Platter. It's amazing how these are prepared with no meat or dairy. We'll be back again!

Pros: Creative plant based dishes, Nice atmosphere, Delicious food

Cons: Often very busy so there is a wait, Wish it was a larger location with more seats

Another Good Option

Mythology is located right next to Doomies.
It is basically NOT a diner (dim lighting, very loud music).

I found half the food to be really good, and the other to be just ok. Baked potato was dry and not "loaded". The Cobber Salad was the best thing I ate/tried (which is funny because I'm not much of a salad person.) (It is also a way to experience the "the egg"!) I was excited by the lemon meringue pie and it was quite a treat. Not actually meringue, but close enough.

Honestly, if there wasn't already amazing vegan restaurants in the city, and a vegan diner even (Cosmic Treats!), I'd give more stars. But I was a little underwhelmed by much I tried/ate. I think I might choose Doomies or Mythology. Too bad you can't get a Cobber with your greasy burger there!

Pros: Interesting ideas in the food department, Great dessert options, Staff was friendly despite swarms of people

Cons: Some food only ok., Somewhat expensive, Not a diner
