it is not always easy to find vegan food in the countryside. fortunately there are many potatoes, onions and pulses in this region, from which they make very delicious vegan options. 💚

Super tasty tamale! - Edit
I had the vegan Tamale at Mercado Municipal. It was incredibly tasty. Food is a bit pricey but ok given the beautiful location.

Great option in Villa de Leyva - Edit
Mercado Municipal is a beautiful restaurant, with lots of tables to sit inside or in the garden area. Staff is super friendly and the menu has a few clearly labeled vegan options. The guacamole was a great starter. I'd never seen one with broccoli inside, so that was interesting - and tasty! I had the tamal as a main dish and it was also quite good. It was missing salt for my taste, but after I added some, it was delicious! Food is pricey, but comparable to other restaurants in Villa de Leyva. It is probably the best option for vegans in town, so I'd recommend a visit!

Best in Villa de Leyva by far - Edit
There were two absolutely delicious Vegan Entre plates on the menu, and we each had one. Tasty, well prepared and presented like a gourmet restaurant. We had already tried the Vegan restaurants and were somewhat disappointed in not finding great food for a week long stay in VDL.

Best food in Villa de Leyva - Edit
On the first visit we thought it was good. We went back again because of the poor quality of other veggie places in Villa de Leyva - and the second time it was fabulous. We made a tapas meal for two out of the veggie starters and they were all totally delicious -including artichoke, a guacamole like you’ve never had before, and a veggie cervices. All those things were gluten free too. The menu is very pretentiously written so you need good Spanish to understand it. Nice setting - and the background music was some great blues.

Superb - Edit
Just had the vegan ‘stir fry de la coope’- loads of veggies including palm hearts, artichokes, amazing local oyster type mushrooms, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans and local veg I never heard of, with quinoa & miso. Amazing flavours, good size portion. Well worth 32k. Compliments to the chef. Definitely recommend for vegans.

Delicious - Edit
We had the Boyaca salad, good dressing and good cheese, and the guacamole with vegetable chips which came with some nice pickles. Everything was absolutely delicious.
Read moreVery nice courtyard, great waiter. This is an upscale place in a touristy Colombian town, so prices are rather high for Colombia.
Pros: Delicious, Interesting tastes and combinations, Friendly waiters
Cons: Price if you're price-conscious, Trigger warning if you can't stand grilled meat

Beautiful courtyard; some vegan options, mostly delicious - Edit
Vegan starters were a very yummy guacamole with dipping chips made of plantains and root vegetables, and a dish of mushrooms (we had it twice, the first delicious, the second a bit less so: less flavour and too much chilli). For the main we had a pizza without cheese, the dough is really nice as is the tomato sauce.

pricy - Edit
They have freshly prepared food and also some vegan options. The Quinoa Salad, or I should say the Quinoa with Salad was tasty but the pumpkin was burnt and the beetroot was cut so thickly, that it was hard to eat. I would not pay 26'000$ again for it, also because I was not full at all after it.

They know the difference between Vegan and Veg - Edit
This is a cute little (non-veg) restaurant in Villa de Leyva with actual vegan options. I had the guacamole a cuchillo which means guacamole dip with delicious veggie chips made from plantain and beets. For my main meal I had the Crema vegana de ajiaco and I veganized a salad which they are willing to do because they understand the difference between vegan and vegetarian. The bread they bring to the table is an Arab bread, no eggs or milk but happens to be made with honey.
