Serves meat, vegan options available. More upscale dining. Menu is meat-centric but reported has one vegan main (a cripsy seitan) plus a few sides that are vegan suitable. Main comes with 2 sides of your choice. Open Mon-Sun 5:00pm-10:00pm.
Was at Maya in Summer of '21 and they had dropped their seitan in lieu of a mushroom lentil cake. The seitan was passable (albeit their vegan sides are severely limited and not great as most of the flavor in Maya's sides comes from butter, cheese, or meat). The lentil cake was atrocious. It was bland, small, and mushy (in a really bad way). They also got rid of their fries (so there's no sweet potato or regular as a fallback). Maya is my wife's favorite restaurant (she eats meat/dairy) so before I would at least try to make the effort with the so-so seitan. But now there's basically nothing left on the menu that's vegan, and what is left isn't palatable.
Okay, as a vegan I don't like to complain a lot. It's amazing that this upscale southern food restaurant has a vegan entree at all. However, they changed their menu frequently but there vegan entree has been the same for 10 years! if you're from out of town and passing through, and you eat gluten, then I would go and get the chicken fried seitan here, and usually at least several of their sides can be made vegan or are vegan already such as the sweet potato fries and some of the sauteed greens. however, if you're like me and you're a local, this restaurant doesn't have a lot of repeat appeal because you know exactly what you're going to get if you're a vegan. They do make their seitan homemade, and it'[censored] or miss how good it is. I have had it when it is kind of gooey like the other review says. I have had it other nights when it is out-of-this-world delicious.
I went here and got the vegan seitan entree with a side of sweet potato fries and steamed broccoli. As soon as I asked the server about vegan options, she knew exactly what I meant, and told me everything that could be made vegan. While I enjoyed my meal, the seitan was in my opinion not cooked completely, as it was chewy and overly damp. Restaurant atmosphere was accommodating, sat on the heated patio which was very warm and cozy.
This was pricey but really well worth the money. The southern fried seitan was absolutely delicious. It did not taste like store bought seitan. It tasted home made. I got green beans and sweet potato fries as my side. I had a salad app without cheese-very good. The virgin cocktails were sooo good I highly recommend them. This is a great place to have a wonderful meal. They even let our small, well behaved dog dine with us on the patio. I was really impressed because this is a non vegan restaurant.
