Yummy udon 🍜

Edit: we revisited Marugame for a second time and I have changed my first review from a 3 to a 4/5. We tried the Veganuary Aubergine Katsu Curry Udon which was really delicious! Great value for money and great service. My original review below I do put down to the fact it was training week with regards to the slow service, so have changed my review to reflect our latest experience!

Original review: I enjoyed my trip to Marugame, and went because on opening week they were offering 50% off food. I ordered the large Kimchi Yaki Udon, and picked out some tempura including veggie gyozas, sweet potato, pumpkin korokke and kakiage. The food was really good, it was on the spicy side which was great for me but not so much for my fiancé who isn’t as much of a fan of spice! The tempura bits were yummy, although had gone a bit cold by the time we queued to pay and sat down to eat. I also liked the condiments station which had a few extra bits to add to the udon.

Overall good food, but would like to have seen more vegan options (e.g. a vegan version of their Katsu).

Tasty and great value

Note: the following review is for the first time we came and I gave them 3/5 but after the second visit I've upped it to 4/5 and I've explained why in the ‘Edit’ section at the bottom of this review.

We came here during their opening training week so we got 50% off on all our food (worth noting if you see any other branches about to open!)

Marugame is unusual in that you order food a bit like a canteen – you take a tray, order the udon dish you’d like (which is then prepped in front of you) then you move along helping yourself to any tempura you’d like. Then you pick up any drinks and desserts and pay at the end of the counter.

Although this is fun and a bit different, if it’s busy and you’re in a queue your food may not be so hot when you sit down. My udon did stay hot but my tempura was mostly lukewarm by the time I sat down which was a bit disappointing.

There wasn’t a huge selection of vegan dishes and I was disappointed that they didn’t have a vegan version of their katsu udon, but it still wasn’t a bad selection. We went for the large Kimchi Yaki Udon and a selection of tempura including sweet potato, pumpkin korokke, kakiage and a few gyozas. The pumpkin korokke was my favourite - it was really tasty! I enjoyed the others too even if they were not that hot. The udon itself was decent – I enjoyed it but I wasn’t blown away.

Something else I liked was that they had a counter with a selection of toppings (all of which were vegan) that you could add to your meal (I added spring onion and tempura pieces to mine).

The restaurant was also nicely decorated and spacious, and the staff were helpful and friendly.
All in all it was a pretty enjoyable experience but I wouldn’t rush back.

Edit: We went again to try their Veganuary Special - the Aubergine Katsu Curry Udon - and it was delicious! It was served really hot and fresh, and the Aubergine Katsu was lovely and crispy. The whole dish was really delicious and at only £10 for a large was really great value. In hindsight 3/5 was perhaps harsh given that it was their training week the first time we went so I've upped my score to 4/5 to reflect the great experience we had this time.

Pros: A different experience, Friendly staff, Decent vegan selection

Cons: Order process means food can get a bit cold, No vegan Katsu Udon option (except in Veganuary!)
