Asian fusion restaurant with nightclub vibe

Saw someone post in a local vegan group so decided to give it a shot. Immediately as you walk in, you get a hip nightclub vibe. We went on a Tuesday evening, so it wasn't very crowded. We ordered 2 appetizers - the wakame salad and the spring rolls. The wakame salad was simple, but delicious and the springs rolls (1 order is 4 big rolls) were perfectly crispy and the sweet black bean sauce was the perfect complement. We then looked at the menu and decided to try the Cucu roll, Green Giant roll, and the El Vegano roll. The El Couch had grilled shallots, eggplant, asparagus, avocado, miso shiitake mushrooms, rolled in cucumber. This was just ok. The Green Giant roll was a bit strange - it had veggies inside the roll, but it was also served with Brussels sprouts and carrots as garnishes. This also was just ok. The "winner at dinner" was definitely the El Vegano roll with Japanese eggplant, zucchini, yellow squash, sweet plantain, avocado and deep-fried topped with pico de gallo. This had some great flavors all melded together. Would have ordered another serving if we weren't so full. The last to arrive was the "Wild Asian Mushrooms" - which was basically big portobello pieces prepared with teriyaki sauce. I was hoping for actual asian mushrooms, but this was something else I would order again. This is a franchise with 4 other locations in NYC. There are definitely some great dishes to try, while others I would stay away from. Glad to see small restaurants trying to offer vegan options. They also have veggie tempura. Note: the menu says the tuna or salmon tartare is vegan - it's not.

UPDATE: Someone went the night before me and they were told that any of the dishes with chicken can be substituted with tofu. Just be sure to ask about preparation/sauce ingredients.

Pros: lots of well-priced starters, good place to go with friends, all food is beautifully plated

Cons: some of the rolls could have a little more flavor, rolls are on the expensive side
