Fantastic food and service - Edit
Makan requires patrons to opt for a set menu when sitting a group of 6 . The vegan plates were delicious and portions substantial. The service was handled efficiently and pleasantly. Makan boasts an elegant atmosphere, and is perfect for both a date night and group celebration.

I looked this place up after reading the listing on Happy Cow and saw they have some delicious looking vegan options on their lunch specials. I guess these are only available during the week as we came on a Saturday and had to order from the a la carte menu. It’s a pretty flash place. I was expecting a more casual dining experience. The service was really lovely although when we first arrived I felt the waitress went a bit over the top filling our water glasses every few minutes. It interrupted our conversation a bit.
Read moreWe ordered the coconut rice steamed in banana leaf stuffed with tempeh. It was served with pickled vegetables any the rice had taken on the subtle smoky flavour of the banana leaf. We also enjoyed the eggplant 3 ways with sambal and the salad with peanut sauce. The eggplant was grilled, topped with eggplant purée combined with the sambal and topped with eggplant chips. These were both really tasty but not particularly creative in the context of Indonesian food. The “3 way” preparation was a bit of a gimmick, imo. It didn’t really add anything to my enjoyment of the dish.
We finished off our meal with the only vegan desert on the menu, black rice with salted coconut cream, some crispy elements, coconut and kaffir lime ice cream. It was very sweet and made me feel slightly queezy afterwards. Again, I felt that the “creative” take on this dish lifted it slightly above warung style Indonesian food in Melbourne but not enough to justify the price.
I might go back to try some of the express lunch specials during the week as it’s not too far from work for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the meal but didn’t really think it was worth splashing out on.
