Fantastic food, growing options - Edit
The food here was so good, some of the best I found in Yucatán, which is saying something! The breakfast menu has a few vegan options and the lunch menu changes daily. When I was there, there were two different vegan options but they were customizable so as to have more variety. One was vegan enchiladas with one of four sauces and the other was a vegan taquitos plate. We got two different styles of enchiladas and both were beyond excellent. I cannot recommend the food enough.
Read moreAnd if that weren’t enough the place is adorable and the women working the kitchen and serving were so nice. They don’t speak much English but are patient with those who have mediocre Spanish. Those with no Spanish at all might have trouble ordering off the lunch menu if you can’t understand the specials. If that’s the case, don’t let it deter you. Either stick to the printed breakfast menu or just ask the server to bring you “almuerzo vegano” and enjoy whatever you wind up getting. You won’t be sorry.

Yummaiz but not enough vegan options - Edit
Nice family kitchen ambience. The vegan sandwich was excellent but the vegan porridge was terrible so chose carefully - it would be good to have more vegan options on the menu. Pina y Chaya juice was lovely, vegan milk was a bit weird.

Homemade style - Edit
The place itself is really nice, feels like home. The food is fresh and homemade style. I got Enchiladas guajillo with vegan cheese and was very tasty. I didn't even get to see the menu, just sat and said I was vegan, the waitress explained what they had vegan for the day. Super recommend!

Favorite vegan enchiladas in Mexico. - Edit
Cute little place, friendly staff. Three enchilada versions stuffed with vegetables. They are not on the menu - just ask for vegan option. Served with beans and/or rice, and bread and salsa.

Decent Veggie Breakfast Option, But Was Hoping for the Set Lunch - Edit
Maiz, Canela y Cilantro is a local, family-owned small restaurant in Merida, with vegetarian and vegan options.
Read moreI visited here for lunch during my stay in Merida and was presented with a breakfast menu. It featured lots of egg options and some veggie options. Perhaps because I arrived at 11:30 am, breakfast was still being served, but I had read about the set lunch of the day in which they had a vegetarian and regular version. This lunch option was not presented to me, which was unfortunate, as I had really wanted to try it and had heard good things. I’m not sure what time their lunch menu starts being served at, but if would be nice if this information was available.
Anyways, I ended up ordering the roasted vegetables and the juice of the day which was Chaya. The roasted vegetables were pretty good though lacking in some flavour. They came with fresh tortillas and refried beans which were delicious! The salsa that the meal came with, was SOO spicy. I was not warned ahead of time by the staff, though I probably should have sampled it first before putting an entire spoonful on my tortilla. My mouth was on fire for the rest of my meal.
The staff were friendly and gracious. There was an open style kitchen situated at the back of the restaurant where you could see the food being prepared fresh by the local women. The decor was nice and there were lots of wooden tables and various local art on the walls. The restaurant had a peaceful, cozy and welcoming atmosphere. I would return again but would try to catch the set lunch of the day! I also wish there had been more veggie options that didn’t include eggs.
Pros: Family owned, Freshly prepared food , Nice atmosphere
Cons: Few vegan options , Lunch of the day was not offered during my visit

Cute little arty place - Edit
What a cute little find in Mérida. We came here for breakfast just as they were gearing up for the day. So the food took a little while. Lots of veggie options but not many vegan options on the menu. Im also intolerant to gluten so ordered the vegetables with refried beans, salsa and corn tortillas. However some toasted looking bread was brought out in lieu of corn tortillas - my bad for not telling them I couldn’t eat wheat I suppose.

Great Experience + Healthy Food + CHEAP - Edit
We walked in and immediately felt like we were in someone’s kitchen! This restaurant was tiny and the only employees were a mother and her daughter. We told her we were vegan and that was all she needed to hear! You can't select what you want to eat, but we enjoyed that factor! The food was fresh, healthy, and we left feeling great! If you're looking for a funky and adventurous meal, this isn't the place but we really enjoyed the experience!

Liked it!! - Edit
Really nice place for going out with your omni friends. They don't have menu so you'll have to listen carefully to what the waiter is explaining. There were 3 meat options and one vegetarian, which could be turned into vegan on request. Was really yummy, at $500 pesos (incl tip) for 4 persons.

What a special place! - Edit
We came for breakfast shortly after they opened, and we’re the only ones here for our meal. We wandered into the back garden, which was adorable, and they brought our meal to us there to enjoy outside. We had the French Toast and sautéed veggies, which came with hand made tortillas, beans and salsa, and the food was outstanding. Gorgeous coffees to top off the meal as well! Absolutely LOVED this place!

Lovely restaurant but not much choice - Edit
Maiz, Canela y Cilantro is such a nice place! It is not an impersonal restaurant , but a smaller place, seemingly in the owner’s home! You can see the elderly women prepare the food in the kitchen, and they don’t have a menu but tell you what’s on offer on that day. So, you are not spoilt for choice, but have to eat the vegan option of the day. But the food is authentic and good home cooking, so I’m pretty sure that it is always at least good. On the day we ate there I had a soup and some plantain-patties with rice, it was delicious and cheap, too (I think it was only 70 pesos). Also have good coffee, which, strangely, you have to order and pay separately.

Best breakfast! - Edit
This place feels like eating in someone’s house. It’s bright, homely and friendly. You can see right through to the colourful kitchen and there is a gorgeous little courtyard to sit in too. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating to our vegan needs.
Read moreNow to the food: absolutely hands down the best breakfast we’ve had so far in Mexico (including fancy hotels). We had the fruit bowl (without yogurt) and whole wheat banana pancakes. They made them vegan especially for us and they were delicious and gooey. There is a coffee bar inside the restaurant as well and their espresso is strong and fragrant. Definitely recommend this place. Will come bask for breakfast and try it for lunch as well.
Ps they have cats!

Delicious lunch - Edit
(I would have given this 5 star but the max rating for a non veg restaurant is 4 stars!)
Read moreDec 2016: Restaurant is a semi open air, colourful and clean restaurant with local artists' work displayed. The server spoke only Spanish but was patient with my rudimentary Spanish. With my sister translating, I was assured my meal contained no animal products. I had a vegetable soup followed by a veg mole with rice and salad, and a fresh squeezed papaya juice (requested without added sugar) and a good coffee.
Pros: tasty food, inexpensive , good service (in Spanish only in Dec 2016)
