Worth the wait.

Main Street Bistro is the place to go for breakfast in New Paltz - and apparently everyone thinks so, because there is always a long wait to be seated. And if you have a party of six, as we did yesterday, you can expect to wait outside for a good 45-50 minutes! It's well worth the wait, though. The food is great, and the coffee is excellent - strong and full-bodied, the way a good cup of coffee should be (soy milk is available). The menu is varied, creative, and extremely vegetarian friendly; they even offer veggie bacon and sausage. Vegan selections are very limited, but there are a few on the menu... and I'd be willing to bet that they would substitute tofu scramble for eggs in many of their dishes, if asked nicely.

This was my second visit to Main Street Bistro. On my first visit, I had a Frittata Skillet from their specials board; if memory serves me, it was two eggs scrambled with some sort of veggies, served in a little skillet on a bed of home fries, and topped with melted cheddar and jack cheeses. It was a year ago, so the specifics are hazy - but I do remember enjoying it thoroughly.

Yesterday I decided on the Veggie Benedict - two poached eggs, sautéed spinach and tomatoes, and cheddar cheese, sitting atop a toasted English muffin, and topped with hollandaise. The eggs were perfectly poached, with the yolks just barely runny, and the accompanying home fries were nice and crispy. My only complaint about the dish is that the English muffin could have been toastier; other than that, it was superb. The two other vegetarians in our party each ordered the Breakfast Club Sandwich - a hulking triple-decker thing on 12-grain bread, which consists of scrambled eggs, pesto, sprouts, red onion, tomato, avocado, and muenster cheese, also served with home fries. Neither of their sandwiches were served with the avocado on it, though, which was hugely disappointing. Still tasty, but when you're looking forward to avocado and the avocado isn't there... sadness ensues. (In defense of the Bistro, neither party bothered to complain about the missing avocado, so the restaurant wasn't given the opportunity to make good on it.) Our omnivorous friends enjoyed their meals, as well; this is a great place to go when you're with a "mixed crowd".

All in all, this place serves a tasty, memorable breakfast. When I next return to New Paltz, I will definitely wait outside for as long as it takes to eat here again.

Pros: Creative, varied menu, Extremely Veg Friendly, Casual atmosphere with an edgy vibe

Cons: Way too small..., Way too popular!

Great decor and atmosphere, OK food

I’ve been coming here for years—every time I’m in New Paltz—but I finally have to admit that it’s not that great. Sure the rock ‘n’ roll decor and the vibe are fun, but the food is only meh, and the vegan options are limited. I finally realized that I used to love this place mainly because it was the only game in town, but now there are plenty of better options for vegans in New Paltz. I’m not sure I’ll be back.

There are lots of non-vegan vegetarian options, like an old-school veggie place, if that’s your thang.

Pretty yummy, but better options locally!

I had been wanting to try this place for awhile because they have quite a few vegan options, including vegan breakfasts! The atmosphere is very cute, but very busy so wait time was longer. It’s a popular spot!

The staff member who waited on me was very knowledgeable about vegan dietary restrictions, even steering me away from the Morningstar breakfast sausage they had (it’s vegetarian, not vegan!!)

We got the tofu scramble and a “Tofu Today” sandwich. The tofu scramble was not scrambled at all, but instead blocks of unseasoned baked tofu served with veggies and hashbrowns. The texture was good but not what you expect with a scramble! The sandwich also had a big chunk of unseasoned baked tofu for the main protein. They were both served with fresh, yummy veggies.

Overall decent options and good experience, but probably isn’t somewhere I’d go on my own as a vegan and instead somewhere I’d go with omnivorous friends. B-Side Grill is across the street and has better options, including a real tofu scramble 😉

Good food, a few options

The food was ok- nothing spectacular in my opinion. Our waiter was SO nice. I got the fried tofu appetizer (tofu tornado) without blue cheese. It was decently. Most options seem to be vegetarian rather than vegan, but they have a few things. Nothing I’d jump to go back to

Pros: Affordable , Place to go with omnis, Friendly staff

Fresh & Yummy

Main Street Bistro is a New Paltz staple & gem 💎

Tons of vegan options, with the option to veganize items by leaving off items or substituting/adding tofu for $2. Staff is knowledgeable on menu items and ask when they’re not sure 👍🏽

Some of the vegan menu items include tofu tornado app, a tofu burrito, jambalaya, plus their veggie chili is vegan 🙌🏿

Pros: Vegan options, Knowledgeable & helpful staff

Cons: Slow-ish service

Love this place!

Main Street bistro is one of my favorite diners. Anything in the menu can be adjusted to be vegetarian/vegan for a none to a small price. Many menu options are already vegetarian and SO good. Fairly priced as well and has a great atmosphere. Definitely recommend.

Pros: great food, good atmosphere , fairly priced
