Yummy !

This was my best meal in Tunis. I chose the fennel couscous with the vegetables, chick peas and beans. Just delicious and very generous servings. Couldn’t have the vegetarian « meat »balls (egg) but didn’t need them anyway. Owner, Gerard, very welcoming. Quick service.

Pros: Choice between four semolinas, Great variety of vegetables, Friendly staff

Simple et bon

Un restaurant sans chichi qui propose un couscous végétarien avec plusieurs choix de graine. Délicieuses boulettes végétariennes. Patron très sympathique. Spot wifi.

Vegan Couscous -- Delightful!

Located in a quiet street in La Marsa, The Couscous Tree (“L’Arbre à Couscous) offers a rare and welcome vegan twist on this traditional North African dish. The restaurant is small, with seating for about twenty-four, and everything appears neat and clean and comfortable. In two visits, one of which was on a Saturday, we had no trouble getting a table right away; it was popular but not crowded. After a warm greeting by the hostess, we were led to a buffet table at the back of the restaurant where she talked us through the menu and invited us to serve ourselves. Despite our limited French/Arabic, we were easily able to ascertain which dishes were vegan and which were not. On the buffet were several kinds of couscous, including spinach, whole wheat, and the traditional “harisa,” a highly spiced local favorite, all of which were prepared without animal products. Best toppings for vegans were the mixed stewed vegetables (potato, carrot, celery, squash, and zucchini), with a scoop of beans (garbanzo and fava), and one of the sauces, mild or spicy as you wish. Be sure to ask for the vegan spinach boulettes, which were delicious! As we sat down at our table, a waitperson brought three small side salads to share: thinly sliced radish, lemon peel, and diced cucumber/tomato. Soft pop music (Eva Cassidy, Eric Clapton, Adelle) played in the background as we enjoyed our meal. The owner came to check on us, and everyone was super friendly. For dessert we drank mint tea and ate a small dish of traditional date cookies (which may be made with honey – I was unable to confirm in French). The cost was moderate on the local economy but inexpensive by American/European standards. In a part of Tunis where vegan menu options are rare and vegan restaurants have yet to catch on, lunch at L’Arbre à Couscous is a welcome delight!

Pros: vegan friendly atmosphere, popular but not crowded, tasty, authentic Tunisian food
