Delicious tacos - Edit
I had the three tacos dish and my favorite were definitely the soy chorizo tacos. One thing that I didn't love was the fact that the tortillas were fried. Overall the dish was fried so it didn't feel like the healthiest of things to enjoy. That said it tasted great and I appreciated the side of rice and beans. The price was fair. I'm open to going back and trying something else on the menu.

Amazing vegan traditional food - Edit
It took a while to find this place because it’s not in the main area.
Read moreThe food is freshly prepared there, tastes like Mexican heaven and the care of the two woman working there is absolutely amazing! We ordered meatballs which are made of lentils and gringas. The sauces are super spicy and it’s an explosion of taste in your mouth! A MUST TRY if you are in playa del Carmen
Pros: Blue curaçao margarita , Crunchy nachos and guacamole , Gringas de pastor!
Cons: I think the location on maps is not correct, No other cons!!!

Good nachos - all freshly made - Edit
Adding my agreement to the other positive reviews. It’s worth going here rather than the vegan option at various other places. Relaxed environment and all vegan. Nachos were great. Tacos and quesadilla also good.

You must try La Vieja Escuela!!! Delicious, authentic Mexican food with a great vibe!!!!! - Edit
We absolutely loved La Vieja Escuela!! We ate there twice while we were in Playa del Carmen and cannot recommend it more highly (even for carnivores)!!! The food was absolutely delicious, the service was incredibly warm, and the vibe was fantastic.
Read moreThis is authentic Mexican cuisine (adapted for vegans), prepared to order. The warm and caring owner, Jimena, opened the restaurant about a year ago with financial help from her mother. Tragically, Jimena’s mother recently passed away, and the restaurant is a tribute to her. The restaurant’s name means “Old School” and is a reference to the fantastic, old school music videos from the 80s and 90s that are constantly playing in the very chill, laid-back atmosphere of the restaurant.
While it is only 100 meters (about 100 yards) from Playa del Carmen’s main drag of Fifth Avenue (La Quinta Avenida), La Vieja Escuela is worlds away from the fake, commercial and overpriced tourist trap restaurants there.
You MUST try this restaurant!

Affordable and delicious! - Edit
Most affordable meal we had in Playa and especially on Avenida Quinta. The nachos are bomb and a good portion size! The gringa de pastor was very tasty but also small - go for the nachos if you’re really hungry. Also, the carrot cake is delicious, crazy good frosting! Apple Maps took us to the completely wrong location when we searched by the restaurant name, so here is a good address to help others : Av. 22 Entre 1era y Calle Quinta Avenida

Incredible traditional Mexican Food in Playa del Carmen - Edit
On a recent trip to Playa Del Carmen we had the honor of being hosted at a delicious vegan restaurant and bar, La Vieja Escuela 🌱📀
Read moreJimena, the owner, opened up last May and has done an amazing job bringing freshness and local flavors to every dish with a crisp and clean presentation.
A few items we swooned over were:
🍅 homemade salsa: spicy and kicks a punch in every bite.
🍈 cantaloupe juice was so fresh and delicious our 8-year-old nearly finished in one gulp
🌮 the tacos were a delightful combination of fresh vegetables and flavor-packed beans that left us satisfied yet craving more
🫓🥑 the sopes were perfection topped with savory goodness
The menu is extensive and is sure to satisfy any flavor palette and desire. 😋 It’s a fantastic location in the heart of the city with a short walk to the beach as well. The vibe is calm and hip, with plenty of fresh air, beats and flavors. 💥
This kitchen has done a lovely job veganizing cultural cuisine packed with freshness and flavor. We highly recommend 👏🏻
…

Come early - Edit
We really wanted to like this place but unfortunately we got here a bit late on an evening they'd been very busy and had almost nothing left to sell. We ended up having the meatballs which were okay but came with a very tiny portion of cold rice. They didn't have enough fillings left to make 3 different tacos, and the ones we had were very bland. Two staff working but no customers besides us, and after they cooked, one was smoking in the seats out front which is not a great look. They were very apologetic about our bad experience though and they didn't even add the tacos to our bill. That was kind, but honestly it was fair as well.
Read moreIt might be a very different experience if you come for lunch, but we didn't want to go back.
Cons: Food was cold and not tasty, Very few things to choose from at night , The guy who cooked was smoking out front after
