Italian vegetarian restaurant with a large menu: pizza, pasta, main dishes, and antipasti different to other Italian restaurants. Better make a reservation. Note that on Saturday a reservation might be difficult as it's open at 6pm and only answer the telephone staring at 5:15pm. Accepts EC-Karte. Directions: take U1 till the Hallerstrasse stop and walk 5 minutes west. Reported closed, Sep 2021.

Sehr lecker - Edit

Wow - excellent food and super friendly - Edit
I really liked the food and the very friendly Italian service. I was a bit confused though about the reviews on happy cow stating that the food is not correctly labeled as vegan. I would recommend not to visit an authentic Italian restaurant if you do not like this kind of style - in the end it is important that they will create the vegetarian dishes also as vegan - if you just ask! They are very flexible (like in Italy..) and can create a lot of dishes in a vegan version and even offer things which are not on the menu. So, very nice and authentic Italian place, I like! And has many tables outside.

Leckerer Italiener! - Edit
Toller vegetarischer Italiener, viele vegane Optionen. Leider steht nur beim Nachtisch konkret auf der Karte, was vegan ist. Alles andere muss man erfragen.

Okay - Edit

Nothing special - Edit
We had read the reviews of this restaurant and it sounded like they would be able to make a great vegan meal but we were disappointed. No items on the menu are marked as vegan and when asking about it the waiter had to really think about what could be made vegan. The dish I got was nothing special and I get a better one at a Vapiano chain restaurant. They were nice though and fixed something for us, but my experience there was the same as if I would go into a random non-veg restaurant and ask them to make a vegan meal for me. I expected more from a vegetarian place with good reviews.

Not very vegan-friendly - Edit
We saw some reviews on here that this place would be very vegan-friendly, but I would not agree with that. Sure, you can get something vegan here, but they don't really have any vegan dishes on the menu. You have to ask what is vegan or if they can adjust any of their non-vegan dishes, and they waiter had to think a while before he knew what to offer us. I had one of the specials for the evening (peppers filled with potatoes and chanterelles with an artichoke cream) which was quite good. My husband had a pasta dish that they improvised because they didn't have any vegan pasta dishes in the menu. It was pretty average. Also, the service was quite slow. We had to wait a while before we even got the menus, then before we could order and then quite a while before we got the food. If you want to eat here and want to be sure to get a table, my advice is to make a reservation. The place was quite full and it seemed as if we were lucky to get a table without a reservation.

They don't really care about vegans... - Edit
As a vegetarian I would give them 3 stars for their "solid-not-special" menu.
Read moreBut as for the vegan part - they just offer it without knowing how to make it. Not even 1 star for that part.
On two occasions my wife complaint about her food - not tasty, no spices at all - and the waiter, in a ridiculous over the top Italian accent (some Germans seem to love that) told her in all earnest: "it's not tasty, signora? It's because it's vegan, you know!"
No excuse, no refund - two times in a row.
Not recommended!!

Pros: The starters are great, The Bread is very tasty
Cons: too many seats near the entrance door - draft, the staff doesn't engage with the needs of the cos, cook doesn't really know to cook vegan

good but Timbuktu communication - Edit
Great choice, good dishes, good wines, decent prices.
Read moreYes indeed as already stated it is difficult on Saturdays to make an advance booking as they only open at 6 pm and only answer the telephone staring at 5.15 pm.
I succeeded in making a reservation by putting a note between their door and door-post. It is astonishing, and rude, that such a restaurant bluntly does not answer a telephone for reservation when closed. And no email either. A veggie Italian going Timbuktu-style anno 2014!
Pros: good food , nice restaurant, nice and interesting surroundings
Cons: Timbuktu style communication

Great food, nice atmosphere - Edit
This restaurant is definetely one of the places to go if you want to have special dinner. The atmosphere and staff are all welcoming and friendly. They have a daily as well as a fixed menu, both completely vegetarian. In the menu there's a remark that almost any meal can be served vegan and some of the desserts are even vegan. The antipasti are delicious as was the main dish I had.

Best vegetarian Italian restaurant in Hamburg - Edit
La Monella is the best vegetarian Italian restaurant in Hamburg and can be well recommended. We're regulars and can say the quality is always at top level.
Read moreThe menu is the usual you would find at any other Italian restaurant but without the dead animals.
The specialties are on the wall behind the antipasti counter. It's always updated depending on the season and you'll find the most delicious dishes and compositions!
But, the best things you'll find in the antipasti counter - they are the best outside of Italy and are an art for themselves - outstanding!!!
Desserts are also very good - especially a liquorice parfait - my favourite.
The restaurant itself is stylish and with three angels in the service nothing can go wrong for a fantastic evening.
Prices are good, as the quality is exceptional (organic!) and the wine prices are ridiculously low.

nothing special - Edit
The food you eat there, is the same food you can find in every Italian restaurant.
Read moreThere is nothing special: pasta, vegetables etc... there are no alternative to the meat (I mean proteinic food such as legumes, Tofu etc..).
It's the most expansive restaurant I've ever been. 2 plates of pasta (26 euro), one plate with 2 little spoonful of antipasti (4 euro) and one with 6 spoonful (almost 9 euro). a bottle of water: 43 euro and empty belly.
Ok, good atmosphere, friendly staff and well presented plates, but it's not enough.
And you have to take the s-bahn to get there (add 2.8 euro per person).
I don't recommend it.
Pros: friendly staff
Cons: price

Nothing special??? Fantastic antipasti, the best outside of Italy and the special dishes???
Read morePlease let me know what restaurant in Hamburg you would consider being able to serve these kind of dishes! Looking very much forward to the information!!!
And the price always depends on the perspective - if you're used to chip shop food, yes it's expensive, if you know Hamburg, it's well, very well, in a most sensible price range!
We don't have to take the S-Bahn there as there's enough parking spaces near the restaurant... the location is in a very good part of town.
Somehow your review sounds very destructive - or you're just not used to going to restaurants... or you just don't like going to this part of town - as it is quite upmarket and maybe you just don't feel "at home"...

Ooh La La (Monella) - Edit
Beautiful restaurant, absolutely top class interior, very professional but friendly with an atmosphere of warm welcoming. This is a superb place delightfully arranged and presented. The food is delicious with huge vegan choice. We had aubergine bruschetta which were sublime followed by a spaghetti arrabiatta and pomodoro which were both amazing. The house white at 15 EUR went down extremely well. I would suggest going here for a meal if you happen to be in Hamburg especially if Italian is a favourite of yours. It's run by Italians and they make you feel at home.

Nothing special - Edit
We were attracted by the news that it was a vegetarian restaurant with good gluten-free options, but in the end my girlfriend had to settle for a risotto, because the gluten free pasta was not home made and could not be applied in all dishes. Myself being vegan, there was not a lot of choice, so I had apasta with tomato sauce.
Read moreIn the end we left a little bit disappointed, though the food was good, we didn't feel it was so much better than what we make at home.
Not recommended for vegans or gluten free vegetarians, but maybe the place for vegetarians who love Italian food.
Pros: nice staff
Cons: few vegan options, fewer gluten free options than expected

Italian moments in Hambug - Edit
If you visit Hamburg and you're hungry, you cannot miss this nice and cosy restaurant in one of the best Hamburg's neighborhoods. No matter if you are vegetarian or not, you'll fall in love with "La Monella" food. I had selfmade Ravioli with Mushrooms in Parmesansauce, a dream, and my boyfriend had a pizza....sooooo delicious!Wine was also good and the desserts were just awesome...tiramisu and pannacotta..so yummy!!!!And the people who work tehre, so crazy and funny..simply Italian!!!
