Go volunteer - Edit
Joe's garage is great! The food serving is ran by volunteers and the meals are donation-based. The time I was there they were fundraising for a family in Gaza, and you can come there with friends and cook for a similar cause. It got other events on as well and foster a sense of community. I will definitely come back.

a great place in Amsterdam-Oost - Edit

But...... an independent political, social, squatted center (collectively run by volunteers & non-profit, that serves a vegan dinner on Mondays and Thursdays - Other days no food and other activities/Check the webpage or follow them at radar.squat.net for the program. Suggested minimum donation covers soup, bread, main course, and dessert. Minimum suggested donations for bio- beers, wine, and non-alcoholic drinks by the bottle. Quirky little place but such a great idea. - Edit
We stopped in here on our first night and it was the perfect place to start. The food was really well cooked and served with a smile. It has a real community feel and the volunteers were so friendly and welcoming. There is only one option for food but you get a starter, main and desert for only 4 euro. Nice cheap beers as well.

Amazing Place - Edit
The food was really delicious and cheap. If you donate 4€ you'll get a soup, a main dish and a dessert. The people were super welcoming and friendly. There were two musicians performing live music after the food. In general this place has a really cool vibe. It seemed like this squatted place also hosts other cool events, so you might want to check out their website.

Very different, beautiful place - Edit
This might not be the place for a fancy date, but if you want to experience a real, open and friendly squat in Amsterdam I highly recommend Joe's Garage. On the evenings that food is served you pay only 4 euros for a great, two- or three course hearty meal. This is a place where you can meet thriving and inspiring people, play cards, sit in the garden en always discover something new.
