A great experience! $$$$ - Edit
Very cool restaurant with a beautiful side garden to eat in. Our service was awesome and the server took extra time to tell us about the food and the culture. A lot of vegan options and the server knew what it was which is always nice. Super expensive but the food had a lot of flavor. I left happy.

Authetic experience - Edit
They really go a long way to make you feel welcome and the food is superb. If you sit outside, sit far away from the traditional oven though or you will smell like bonfire😄

Vegan Options a Bit Weak - Edit
This restaurant has unique and authentic food. The non-vegans in my group loved this place and said their dishes were incredible.
Read moreThe vegan options were not bad but felt underwhelming compared to the non-vegan options. They seemed a bit bland and like they hadn’t received as much attention.

Very exciting experience - Edit
I’m so happy we decided to go to Ix Cat Ik when in Valladolid. We had a late lunch/early dinner so we were almost alone which meant that we got great attention and exceptional service. We got a table outside, just by the little hut where the maya women prepared the tortillas and bean patties. They also had some of their main produce on display, and where happy to show how the chocolate grinder for example worked. Our waiter - Angel - was also very good at explaining what food we had and how it had been prepared. Loved to be able to learn more about the Mayan culture through food.
Read moreThe food was also very, very nice and we very much appreciated the hand craft beer they offered. As with most of my vegan meals in Mexico I could have wished for some more seasoning, according to my non-vegan husband his food tasted way more than mine which was a bit plain. But the whole experience made the visit well worth, and if I ever return to Mexico and Valladolid I will definitely go back to Ix Cat Ik.
Pros: We’ll thought through vegan option, Lovely, friendly and educational staff , Very unique experience
Cons: Could have wished for some more seasoning/flavour

One of the best meals - Edit
This was one of the best meals of our three weeks in Mexico. All focused on local ingredients and classic Mayan preparation. Enough vegan options to satisfy us - get the empanadas without cheese. Sadly, the chaya caldo isn’t vegan so we didn’t get that. The garden is lovely. Service was warm and friendly. And there was even a little Mayan ceremony/drumming. #Veganuary

Delicious Authentic Mexican Food - Edit
I gave the food five stars, as everything was delicious. Vegan options are clearly marked, and some vegetarian options can be made vegan easily. The waitress was very knowledgeable about vegan options. Authentic Mexican, pre-Hispanic food. The house appetizer was amazing and they even have a vegan habanero sauce upon request. The chaya empanada (minus cheese) is a must try. They had four vegan/vegan option appetizers and two main dishes. Would definitely recommend.

Making an effort but not all there yet - Edit
Whilst the fact that they are making some small effort to be vegan friendly is appreciated, unfortunately my partner’s vegan empanada came with a slice of dairy cheese on top which put a dampener on the evening. The atmosphere was very friendly and it’s clearly a family business, and there were two vegan mains on offer. The tortillas were excellent although I would have been happy with a bit more flavour in my food generally. We did have some excellent wine though and enjoyed the tour of the garden and tortilla hut.

Best Restaurant in Valliadolid! - Edit
Great authentic mayan restaurant in a beautiful town. The layout is very open, so even if you choose to sit "inside," you still feel like you are out on a terrace. They grow their own herbs and other ingredients. While we were there, our server gave us a little tour of the garden and the hut that the tortillas are made in in the traditional style. Those tortillas were amazing! I could have just eaten those and been happy. I also had some chips and a tomato& squash seed dip, chaya soup, and a gordita with rice & beans. All were delicious! They have vegan options marked on the online menu, so it's best to look at that before going. The in house menu only marks vegetarian options, so you have to ask which ones are specifically vegan. The staff is super friendly and accommodating.
Read morePros: Excellent food, Local ingredients and from scratch food, Friendly staff
Cons: In store menu does not specify vegan vs vegetarian
