Traditional house, great food - Edit
Such a cute traditional place. Duck a few times if you are 5’8” or taller 😅. But we were there for lunch and it was very quiet. The staff were nice and the food was great and priced well. Definitely recommend a visit.

Lovely food, lovely service - Edit
I visited in 2019 with a friend, we were a little early and it was pouring down with rain. They let us in early and served us early. I had a great chat with someone who worked there as I mentioned my favourite restaurant was the Itadakizen branch in London. She mentioned their daughter was working there at the time. I’m very chatty so I love having conversations with people!
Read moreThe food and drink was the highlight of my trip to Japan. I ordered a course of food that seemed to be themed around by products of tofu production. Okara, yuba etc. I also ordered a local, organic beer which was delicious.
The location was a bit off the beaten path but it meant I visited a temple/shrine location that wasn’t busy and touristy.

Kyoto Restaurant from Itadakizen Brand - Edit
Itadakizen Kyoto is part of a big group that manage professionally different restaurant around the world and considering the huge investment for the place, the training of the staff and the marketing, they really can't go wrong! Very standard and easy to make food, but i understand that for many tourist is the perfect place for vegan Japanese food in Kyoto.

One of the best vegan food I’ve had so far! The place is an old Japanese house which gives you a nice and cozy atmosphere. The food is amazing and with a homemade taste. They also have English menu and a delicious bamboo leaf tea.

Amazing vegan traditional Japanese cuisine - Edit
This was the best restaurant we went to in Kyoto; just so good!! I can’t wait to go back! The atmosphere was also really wonderful, all wood, tastefully decorated. Best to make a reservation on weekends, though not entirely necessary. Great food!

Taste diversity in a dimly-lit setting - Edit
The restaurant has a lovely rustic interior with dim lighting (go after 6pm!) which really made for an even lovelier meal. We ordered the set meal (1 each) and were presented with an array of some of the tastiest food we've had in Japan yet. The grilled tofu is to die for as was the Korea-style pancake; portion sizes are perfect and we left feeling totally satiated but not over full: perfect!

Amazing food - Edit
Every dish was delicious, setting was delightful, and service was impeccable. Highly recommend the set dinner - worked out to 1700 per person and it was delicious. Particular stand outs were the tofu steak and the Korean pancake. Only negative note was that there were two very loud American men at the table next to us who kept on speaking on their phones. Shame as the atmosphere was lovely until they arrived.

Japanese vegan at it’s best! - Edit
We’ve found some good vegan restaurants in japan but they tend to have a western influence, burgers etc. rather than traditional Japanese. Itadaki Zen provided the first vegan meal that we felt was authentically Japanese. One of the best meals I have had, would recommend travelling to visit. To make it better, the drinks are very reasonably priced.

We arrived around 2:30 for a late lunch and the place was pretty empty, food came out quick and was delicious. They have set lunch options or you can choose from the menu. Really glad we found this place, worth a trip.

Worth the journey for delicious food in a peaceful setting - Edit
Itadakizen is a charming little place in a quiet neighborhood. It was a bit of a journey from where I was staying, but very well worth it! The food was delicious and well prepared, and service was very pleasant. I had the Bibimbap set, which provided a well-balanced variety of flavors and textures.

Small menu - Edit
We walked here across town and I can't really recommend that. Food was good but I was expecting more options that I wouldn't be able to find elsewhere. Sushi was basic for me, ramen I can also find close by. Otherwise if you are willing to walk or take the bus or you happen to be around it is a very good place to go to!

Best vegan japanese restaurant - Edit
I can't express how happy I was after eating here. There are surprisingly many vegan restaurants in kyoto that are vegan. This one offers traditional dishes also from the buddhist cuisine. Everything I ordered was perfect, highly recommended!

Heartwarming Ramen - Edit
The soy milk ramen was quite filling, and delicious. I love a deep ramen. I highly recommend the croquettes for appetizers. The “meat” balls were okay. The atmosphere, music (soft jazz), and decors are outstanding, and the staff were really nice. The woman who served us also speaks perfect English.

Perfection - Edit
This is hands down the best place I have ever eaten at in my life. I left this place with a happy stomach and a heart full of love. The restaurant itself is in a quiet little neighbourhood. Inside, the furnishing is wooden, with a cute attention to detail as observed by the various Knick-knacks places everywhere. I took my parents with me as they were visiting from Australia.
Read moreFor drinks, I had an amazake cocktail that was made with fresh apples. We also shared some red wine, which was delicious. For dinner, we had a 3 dish appetiser, korean pancake, tofu croquette, seasonal tempura (veggies only available for 3 weeks in spring), and soy sauce ramen. I think 4-5 plates between 2 people is perfect, unless you want one main meal.
For dessert, we had a date and raisin brownie, and a matcha and azuki bean cake. Both were served with a tofu-based cream, which was delicious. Everything is made in-house by the 3 chefs who work there.
To top this all off, the staff were so welcoming. One of the ladies was very conversational. I am able to speak Japanese, so we had a lovely conversation, but she also conversed with my parents in English. The male who works there speaks English, French and Japanese. He has worked in France for 7 years as a chef. There was another lady as well who was responsible for the desserts who was very lovely.
I seriously can’t recommend this place enough. From the bottom of my heart, I truly appreciate the experience I had here. I would come back every day if I could if only just for the service.
Pros: Exceptional food , Incredibly friendly , Lovely location
