Nice little place but served me a non-vegan dish by mistake - Edit
Ippuko Tea House is a nice little place serving a range of Japanese dishes. There's a good selection of vegan options so I was excited about visiting. I was really enjoying my meal... and then I bit into an onigiri rice ball & found it was filled with tuna rather than pickled plum! I was obviously very upset about this error but they were very apologetic about it. It nonetheless really spoilt the experience for me. Would I return? Probably as it's a small business that's worth supporting. Just make sure you have got what you ordered before tucking in.

Very cute & tasty! - Edit
Quiet & quaint tea shop. The tables were full when we went so we took some cakes and a tea away - it was hard to choose as most options were vegan! We ended up having Yuzu chocolate cake and Matcha blondie - such unique flavours!

Amazing little traditional Japanese tea house - Edit
Absolutely loved this quiet little tea house just around the corner from the Minister & just up from the main shops; an ideal location. Most options were vegan on the mains menu, nearly all drinks could be made vegan & most of the cakes on the daily cakes board were also vegan...so many options it was hard to choose! I got the tofu teriyaki mayo donburi bowl (with miso soup of course!) which was super tasty & a really good size portion, then I couldn't resist a vegan matcha blondie, which was yummy, although I think you'd have to be a bit of a matcha addict like me to appreciate it. Will definitely be going again.

Was super excited to hear they were doing a Veganuary 3 course set menu & it did not disappoint! For a very fair £20, we had the most delicious traditional Japanese food unlike anything else I've ever tasted. For mains I had the Umami spaghetti; was better than any Italian pasta I've ever had! And for dessert the matcha zenzai, which was so bizarre to me, but really nice (though as in my previous review, I'm just a teeny bit biased towards matcha things!) Would definitely recommend & actually they're running the Veganuary menu into March so still plenty of time to try it!

Gorgeous food - Edit
There is plenty of vegan fare here - it feels like a vegan place that does meat if you insist (unlike most places that are omni but will include a vegan dish or two on sufferance). Beautifully presented, really tasty

Beautiful Authentic Experience - Edit
I ordered the Teriyaki Tofu Teishoku dish and wasn’t disappointed, in my opinion the best dish to order if you want a variety of different taste experiences. The aesthetic of the restaurant and cafe is extremely welcoming and has an authentic & home cooking vibe. I also ordered a flat white which was equally as delicious I just regret not choosing some tea to have, they have a super wide variety of tea to choose from! Overall, easily one of my favourite places visited in York.

Amazing food - Edit
The food way amazing, so many vegan options! Even as a picky vegan I managed to have plenty to choose from. Definitely recommend if you’re in the area and don’t mind a non vegan place. Staff didn’t seem as friendly though.

Amazing Japanese food! - Edit
So great and to be honest I’d give 5 stars despite them serving meat if I could. Delicious food, really nice little place with lots of vegan options and a whole dessert board full of vegan options too! Staff were lovely and you could book ahead of time which is useful since I was coming from out of town. COVID conscious too.

i have been to ippuku twice and thoroughly enjoyed both of my visits, the staff are really friendly and the menu is varied. the teriyaki tofu is so good and comes with a bunch of sides. the gyoza are also fantastic and their iced coffee is great. they used to have a vegan curry on the menu which i really miss because it was so tasty, i hope they bring it back! the prices are really reasonable for the amount and quality of food you get, really want to visit again soon and would recommend to anyone :)

Japanese love - Edit
I'd give them 5 stars if I could.
Read moreWe had our 3rd date here not long after they opened and have been back to visit many times since. The food is lovely with lots of vegan choice. I love tofu and there's so many tasty ways to eat it here. We love sitting out back in the courtyard although last time we went they were having work done outside so we sat in the restaurant. The restaurant is super clean and the staff very friendly. Go try their great selection of tea! Ooo and the cocktails, the delicious cocktails.
Pros: Yummy food, cute location, friendly staff.

Favorite Restaurant in York - Edit
I WISH I could rate this 5 star (or even higher, but due to that being reserved for fully vegan restaurants the app would let me). Ippuku is one of the BEST places you could visit. The staff are some of the friendliest people I've ever met and are so willing to help adjust just about anything on the menu to make it suitable for vegans. There is a large variety of drinks and cakes if that's what you're in the mood for or a full range of dishes and sets for lunch/dinner. You couldn't go wrong with anything ordered here.

A Taste of Japan - Edit
Myself and the family had a lovely evening meal here. The staff were very friendly and the service and ambience were excellent. There are lots of vegan optons including specials and we decided upon the teriyaki tofu, veg gyozas and zaru soba noodles to share. All the dishes were beautifully presented and flavoursome. The tofu being my personal favourite. We also ordered a refreshIng kuromamecha non-caffeine tea and a delicious peanut butter chocolate crunch to bring an end to a lovely meal. I highly recommend.

Deserves 5 stars! - Edit
I understand why HappyCow reserves 5 star ratings for vegetarian and vegan restaurants, but this place is seriously GOOD! They serve authentic Japanese food (a lot of comfort food, like home cooking, but they have fancier dishes too) that is very hard to find anywhere in the UK.
Read moreLots of vegan and vegetarian options, and unlike most Japanese restaurants, they fully understand what we do and don’t eat. No sneaky bonito when they say it’s veggie!
Food can take a while to be prepared, but to me this is a good thing. It’s lovingly made for you and that comes through.
Portions are satisfying, service is friendly and, as you’d expect from a Japanese restaurant, polite. :)
