Excellent! - Edit
I was looking for somewhere out of the way after leaving the train station and heading into York, popped into here just before 4pm and had an oat matcha latte and a brownie with miso caramel, absolutely gorgeous. Potentially the best brownie I've had. I will return as it's a lovely little place and staff are friendly, the food/drinks are great!

Fabulous lunch - Edit
We had a fabulous lunch at the Ippuku Tea House in York. Although they serve meat, there was plenty of vegan options- and as an added bonus, virtually every option on the menu was gluten free and the few items that were not GF were clearly marked. Great dessert options, all GF and vegan clearly marked. Charming and pleasant waitresses who were helpful and knowledgeable about the menu. I would definitely recommend this place for a delicious lunch, and it is great for vegans and coeliacs as well. Note that it is very small and, particularly if you want a table for 4 or more, you do need to book. There is a small outdoor area at the back for eating as well.

A lovely little tea house with clear vegan options. The matcha pancake is fluffy and delicious. The added strawberry and biscuit on top were delicious. Matcha was very good and they have different milks.

Popped in for quick bite - Edit
We explained we didn’t have much time so couldn’t really go for anything on the full menu and chose to go for the Onigri filled rice balls. We’d said we didn’t have much time and got very nervous about how long it was taking. When it arrived we had the throw it down our necks so couldn’t fully appreciate it but did enjoy it nevertheless, especially the pickled plum filling! Maybe I’ll just have to come back to try something else at my leisure. Staff were very friendly and pleasant

Great place - Edit
Great atmosphere and very much like the way a Japanese cafe runs- more peace and less loud chatting.
Read moreLovely drink options.
I didn’t get food though as I’m soy intolerant and there wasn’t an option that I could get for this.
I was told Japanese cuisine isn’t something I should go for due to that, but I use coconut aminos sauce at home instead of soy as it’s healthier and tastes even more nice in my opinion.
I would love for them to be able to cater well for soy free options, using coconut aminos and instead of tofu- use mushrooms for one option for soy free people.
Mushrooms are so diverse and there are even mock meats made from pea protein now that can be used.
Pros: Drinks, Staff, Atmosphere/ decore
Cons: No soy free vegan options , Not having coconut aminos on hand

So yummy! - Edit
Tried Ippuku for the first time today and had a great experience. There are lots of interesting and unusual vegan options which are clearly labelled, including the regular menu, a set vegan menu, specials, drinks, and several desserts. Everything we had was delicious (especially the matcha blondie for pudding!). The food felt light and healthy, not too sweet, oily or artificial. The staff were all very friendly and the service was quick despite having a full house. The atmosphere was nice and quiet.
Read moreThe only downside is that it is very expensive (we spent £70 on lunch for 2 people). Note that you do need to call at least a day in advance to make a booking - we tried walking in on a Saturday right at opening time but they were already fully booked for the whole day, so we made a booking for Sunday lunch instead.
We will definitely go back and try more of the menu!
Pros: Delicious, healthy food, Quiet atmosphere, Friendly staff
Cons: Expensive

Brilliant little find - Edit
Would give this place 5 stars if I could! Really tasty food, at least 50% of the menu is vegan all the time, loads of vegan cakes, friendly staff and a really authentic experience. You can also but Japanese products here.
Read moreWe have eaten the donburi before, which is very tasty. Today we went for cake and the chocolate and yuzu and raspberry and yuzu did not disappoint. A range of teas and coffees are also available (they even go so far as offering vegan whipped cream on the top of iced coffee).
To add to the uniqueness of Ippuku, downstairs there is a small library where you can borrow Japanese books.
Update: went back, had the tofu teriyaki mayo donburi bowl, which was delicious, and the chocolate brownie with a side of peach sorbet. Total YUM.
