🇻🇳 Huong is where the heart is 🇻🇳 - Edit
[Sep 2, 2022] First time visitor with my not-vegan-yet friend who is "eating less meat because it's good for the planet".... don't judge, if she continues on this trajectory, she'll be vegan 🌱 one day! We arrived in time for Blunch, which is the same time as Brunch (eg 10 or 11-ish am) but you just eat normal food, not muffins or pancakes. I got the spring rolls and the Hai Nan mock chicken 🍗. Spring rolls were OK, not fantastic, but not awful, ie average, maybe just above average. The mock chicken 🐔 was succulent, juicy and authentic. Came with a nice tangy sauce and a bowl of brothey liquid that I didn't really know what to do with, but they both tasted great poured over the rice n chicken... come to think of it, there's not much else you can do other than a pour over, so that's a sound strategy. My not-yet-vegan friend got the pork 🐖 n duck 🦆 dumplings 🥟 and the garlic plant based tofu 🧇 and an iced coffee ☕. I got one of the dumplings in exchange for a mock chicken 🦤 chunk. It was super good with the chili n soy dipping sauce. I forgot to sneak some of the tofu while she wasn't looking 👀... Or just politely ask. But she was very impressed for someone who doesn't eat much tofu. I had a little sip of the coffee and it was super strong. Really nice n relaxing atmosphere with authentic contemporary Vietnamese pop n rock songs. Lovely staff too. #aloimaak #ijwtt.

A weekly regular - Edit
We literally go every week because it’s so good! I love the spicy lemongrass noodle soup, the combination pho, Mongolian beef, rice paper rolls, spring rolls, Peking duck rolls! Literally everything is amazing.

Food is OK! - Edit
The restaurant didn't follow my order with special request. I specifically asked for pho with no mock meat, less noodles and more veggies. The order was full of noodles, 2 pieces of mini brocolli, 2 pieces of mini bok choy stem, 2 slices of carrot, 1 mushroom sliced in half and 1 piece of not fresh cauliflower mini floret. Just noodles! Even some invisible pieces of chinese cabbage were not fresh either! Not coming back!
Read moreJust visited as I am vegan and love to support vegan restaurants. If they ask me to pay extra for veggies, I do not mind at all!
I missed to take picture of cauliflower floret.

Enjoyable food and atmosphere - Edit
I enjoyed my lunch here. We ordered to share the salt and pepper tofu, mock duck with rice and Chinese broccoli, and pho. Good flavors in each dish and the mock meats had their own consistency and flavor to represent the meat they were replacing. The service was great too.

Mock meat aplenty - Edit
Delicious vegan Vietnamese - offers a wide range of mock meat dishes. Some are a little unusual tasting, definitely for an acquired taste. They offer many dishes that are vegetable based

Disappointed. Crispy garlic mushroom was ok but the rest???. - Edit
Cheap vegan food but not really tasty.
Read moreMust cater to a certain crowd but just not for everyone, especially if you have tastebuds. I won’t be going back and if I do, I must find and install my tastebuds first.
Maybe I just went in with too much expectations. Hmm
The worst part is she charged for containers that I was initially led to believe was free. Annoying.
Staff are friendly though.

Nice option in Footscray - Edit
Nice option in Footscray where the menu is varied. Always up for a big, hot Vietnamese soup and mine was particularly packed with assorted mock meats, noodles and flavour.

A little dissapointed. Awful/loud music - Edit
After so many good reviews and having it on the list, we finally tried this place. It was for lunch on a sunday.
Read moreAfter all was said and done, we were a little dissapointed. Vege Mama is better in my opinion. Food wise and in general.
The biggest put off is the extra loud, Asian ballad music, pumping out. It's terrible and really doesnt make for a comfortable and relaxing experience. Even worse if your seat is close to the counter area.
The service was also dissapointing. We were waited on by a younger man/teen. He couldnt be any less helpful. Didn't know anything about the menu at all and couldnt recommend anything. He clearly had no interest in being there. So that was strike two
The food wasn't too bad. It maybe depends on what you get. The Sate 'goat' ended up being really oily and just big chunks of mock meat in an oily sauce. The noodles with 'duck' was quite good. The mixed mock meat claypot was also fairly average. With way too much bok choy in it. Have the calamari and at $10 for a few pieces, they were tasteless. The other items are a little overpriced compared to other Asian vegan. Probably won't return and especially don't want to sit though that loud elevator music again. We tried Vegie mama in Doncaster a few weeks ago and felt it was better, for this type of vegan food.
Pros: All vegan
Cons: Awful and too loud music playing , A little expensive.

Bad music - Edit
Lovely people and good service. However, everytime I come here the music is super painful. Cheesy & cuts to youtube blogs and business ads audio. Really detracts from eating. The lemongrass soup is good & the spring rolls are super tasty with mint and lettuce. Soups need thin rice noodles, like 2min noodle noodles. The fat ones are impossible to pick up & splash on your face. I dont like the mock meat combinations in dishes like the soups or rice paper rolls. The satay is not satay anywhere on the menu its lemongrass. They dont use peanuts. Nice jelly dessert in shapes. Some dishes are good!
Read morePros: Big soup, Yummy spring rolls, Happy to please - lovely people
Cons: Too much weird mock meat, Dishes are hit & miss, Not full vegan. A couple of dishes with egg.

Cannot speak highly enough - Edit
I'm relatively new to the area, so I'm trying to find new places to go to regularly. I've found one here! I'm obsessed with their BBQ fried rice, it's soooooo good. Also loving the salt and pepper tofu, and the Mongolian "beef". Even the soup that comes as a free side to some dishes is incredible. It's liquid coriander gold.

Friendly and accommodating service - Edit
Staff was fantastic, recommended the “goat”, but my bf didn't like spicy foods, so they split the dish into 2 hotpots for us so I could have it spicy and he mild. How's that for service? Also had bbq fried rice and combination hotpot. Ghost was favourite! The tofu custard dessert is delicious and only $3!

Love this place - Edit
Huong Viet is awesome and the staff are super friendly. When I leave Footscray I will surely miss it. They are very fast, I usually pick up my order within 10 minutes. I recommend the gỏi cuốn (rice paper rolls) and the bún (vermicelli noodle salad). I usually order $20 worth of food and I can't finish it. Value for money for sure.

Delicious *and* FODMAP friendly!! Great mock meat for those who miss the flavour, or those attending with staunch meat-eaters. No onion or garlic for those lacking intestinal fortitude (like me). Am obsessed with this place.

Ditto to almost all the other reviews: food extremely fresh and flavoursome; service friendly; and portion sizes H-U-U-U-U-U-GE, I’ve never been short on appetite, but the noodle soups here serve a family.
Read moreI’ve only had the noodle soup (Bun Bo Hue, to be precise - what else is there?!) so can’t speak to the other dishes, but - on that basis alone - I’d give the restaurant 4.8 stars (5 if it were fully vegan).
Not sure what people meant about the waiting times - presumably when busy in the evenings? - but my two lunch attendances have been exceedingly speedy (mind, I *was* the only customer). Nor the ‘loud music’ or whatever....I find the place great value, only wish it were located a little further north!
Pros: massive servings, super-dooper cheap, central location, fresh delicious food, friendly service
Cons: not 100% vegan, too far west 😝
