This is not a vegan benny - Edit
We ordered came here because they purportedly have vegan brunch options. We ordered the veganized option for the sweet yam benedict and shakshuka. There is another vegan Benedict on the menu with a chickpea cake and mushrooms.
Read moreThe flavours were great but the benny did not resemble a vegan eggs benny in any way. It was just 2 yam slices of roasted yam with a fried plantain on it and guacamole type sauce. There are a lot of pick me vegans out there that will be grateful to have and eat any options. That’s not me. I’ve had a lot of great vegan food all over North America and dishes like this make vegan food seem sad and weird.
The last time I checked the key components of an Eggs Benedict were English muffins, egg or egg analogue, and hollandaise sauce other garnish/flavour. This had none of those things. It was just two stacked vegetables with a sauce. The sauce was good and so was the hot sauce.
There were not enough calories in this dish to call it a meal and the taste does not really make up for the fact that the dish lacked a high protein element and should not be the same price as eggs/dairy/meat version.
Calling it a “benny” of any kind is misleading.
Similarly, the shakshuka subbed two poached eggs and feta cheese with 3 strips of tempeh. Tempeh strips are usually used as a sub for bacon while flavoured soft tofu gets used for poached eggs and vegan cheese, especially vegan feta, exists and is in basically every grocery store in Victoria. So confusing.
They didn’t have soy milk here either.
At least there were lots of chickpeas in the shakshuka and the tomato sauce was nice. The bread was grocery store bought sandwich white. A sourdough might have made more sense. Three sad strands of pea shoots as garnish.
I wouldn’t go out of my way to go here again. The menu is confusing to navigate as a vegan since most of the vegan options are “adaptable” versions you end up paying the same fee for less food.
I suggest all the staff try eating the veganized versions of the dishes they offer and if they wouldn’t order it themselves and pay full price for it, time to rework.
Pros: A few strange adapted vegan lunch , Drinks were good
Cons: Someone needs to google a vegan benny recipe, Expensive for the small amount of food served

Good brunch spot - Edit
Had the vegan Benny with some of their housemade curry hot sauce and it was just so amazing! My husband had the smoked tofu sandwich, he said it was good but not all that smoky. The potatoes were so delicious. I loved the creamy heaven that was my London fog and our sampling of the vegan baked goods they had that day. A fantastic brunch and we look forward to coming back when we are next in town.

Good effort, but fanned the shot - Edit
My husband ordered the smoked tofu sandwich and enjoyed it. I ordered a flat white with oat milk (which was delicious) and the vegan Benny which was a disappointment because no hollandaise (it’s easy to veganize sauce, and isn’t the sauce what makes it a benny?) The chickpea fritter was good and arrived hot, but they tried to top the fritter with a meat-alternative which was flavourless and colder than the rest of the dish. The potatoes were cooked to perfection, so I ate the fritters and potatoes and left the toppings.

Cons: Taste was meh, The vegan Benny has no sauce

Unique twist - Edit
I really wanted to try House of Boateng and went in for a weekend brunch. Beautifully plated food with a different taste. I wasn't too keen on what I ordered (Vegan Benny) but I think that is more due to my palate rather than the food not being good. I am looking forward to trying the vegan version of the roasted yam benny next time.
