Get most of my bulk and specialty vegan good here

Title says it all. I only come here once every couple of months to stock up on particular items, since much of the day-to-day stuff is a lot more expensive here than elsewhere, but everything here is high-quality & there are plenty of specialty vegan options that you probably won't find anywhere else within 100 miles!

Eh.

By definition not a real cooperative, and unsurprisingly has a history of workplace toxicity, especially after leadership from Price Chopper came in. Certainly not somewhere unionizing would be easy, ironically enough.

There are many specialty vegan items here that I’ll occasionally stop in to splurge on, but the prices are unjustifiable. I’ve seen items available elsewhere a mile away cost an extra $5 here. In 2022, their so-called “member owners” collectively “invested” over 52,000 hours of unpaid labor, while the store made over $28.5 million dollars. The discounts you get as a member are negligible because the mark-ups here are so high that working just brings them down to something comparable to other local stores. A large selection of the inventory is local. Workers are still not being paid an actual living wage. So what’s the deal?

And to plop such an expensive bougie “co-op” in the ‘hood where people like me rely on food stamps? It just isn’t right. There are some good produce programs for SNAP users, but the low-income people who live near it should be able to enjoy the other stuff, too.

Also, very disturbing for them to have pictures of living cows being pet directly above a section of locally murdered cows’ gory body parts.

The best ever

This is the best co-op that I have ever been to. This is also the only one I've been to but I assume it's the best in the world.
Super friendly staff to start off.
They have a wide variety of fresh fruits, veggies, and fungi(Many of which are organic). The vegan options in the grab and go section and the deli/hot foods area were off the charts. The choices in the bulk area were again, better than I have ever seen. The non dairy milks and cheese section was incredible as well. Don't get me started about the frozen food options and dry goods/ sauces section haha.
I didn't even get to venture to a few parts of the store because we were on our way through town.
Anyways, killer store. Shop here if you like good food and other cool stuff.

So good!

I love the variety of vegan baked goods and candy, as well as some hard to find items (e.g., May Wah products). Their grab and go cooler also has many great vegan options. We picked up an Easter cake on Saturday, and it was amazing!

Pros: Hard to find products, Delicious in-house bakery and kitchen, Good prices when compared with similar stores

Cons: Still selling animal products 😢

A favorite

Many vegan items in retail products, prepared foods, and the cafe. The vegan breakfast sandwich is delicious, and there are always vegan baked treats (love the fluffernutter cookie bar!). Ample parking, and a couple of electric car charging stations.

Okay but they sell DEAD DOMESTIC RABBITS

I liked the co-op. Really. They have a lot of tasty food prepared daily and it’s a co-op business. Neat.

But tell me why when my boyfriend and I approached them about the truly upsetting practice of selling whole, skinned domestic “meat rabbits”— the only difference between ‘meat’ and ‘pet’ bunnies is whether you eat them!—we were told that yes, they had received “a lot of complaints” because it “upset a lot of customers” and they would not be ordering any more rabbits. We heard this from at least six “member-owners.” We were told they would sell the last and not renew the order. My friends were told the same. Okay. This was August 2019.

So then I go in two weeks later and there is at least ten dead rabbits in the freezer section. I was lied to, my Houserabbit Society former-customer friends were lied to, my boyfriend was lied to, and frankly I’m done with the co-op. They lost me as a customer. The four bunnies who are NOT meat who live with me are worth having to make my own tofu egg salad.

Pros: Vegan options daily, Co-op

Cons: Dead rabbits, Deceptive practices, Rabbits are pets

Nice Stop

We stopped here twice on a road trip (Sunday). It was great to see so many vegan and gluten free options. Everything was labeled really well. The staff also seemed knowledgeable.

There was a seating area after checkout with a microwave and both plastic utensils to go and regular silverware to eat there.

Everything we had was pretty good. We really liked the breakfast sandwich, the kale salad and the dill dip.

We did order a mocha but didn't drink it bc it was pretty bad.

Definitely recommend for anyone to check out. We were glad we stopped.

The bathrooms were fairly clean, wheelchair accessible and non gendered.

Lots of Vegan Options

Grocery store with a hot bar and desserts. Many hot food vegan options and desserts. The only place I can buy in Albany ready made vegan cakes, donuts, bagels, and even vegan mac and cheese. The food varies from day to day but there's always at least one good vegan option. There's and dining area and free wifi. Clean bathrooms and friendly service.
It's a little pricey but vegan food is so worth it. If in Albany defiantly check out this place.

Pros: lots of vegan ready to eat food

Cons: pricy

The best!!!

This place is like Whole Foods but better! We ordered an amazing vegan birthday cake from there, found all the newest vegan brands and products, and felt completely welcomed by every employee. Everything is labeled GF or vegan, and the food court is loaded with delicious vegan lunches and meals. Really, if you haven't stopped by, you should!

Pros: Great staff, A vegan's paradise , Perfect place to eat as well as shop

Good selection on a road trip

We stayed at the Ramada Inn next door on a road trip through NY so that we could go to this co-op in the morning before getting back on the road. We stocked up on simple car-friendly snacks like rice cakes, fruit, nuts, carrots and hummus and I got some coconut milk yogurt. I guess you could get most of those at any grocery store but it was nice to have the vegan and organic options!

large selection

as a vegan living in Albany, NY the honest weight food co-op is a lifesaver. You can find anything, and if you can't find it, they'll order it for you. if you live locally you can also become a member which gets you a pretty sweet discount. The staff is always willing to help and their products are local, fresh and affordable. YES they may be more expensive in some areas (compared to Walmart, Price Chopper and Hannaford are around the same prices) but you are getting what you are paying for.. which is quality. All their meat is local, and so are their eggs. You have an opportunity to recycle your used egg cartons, grocery bags, batteries, paper and used electronics up by the front desk. During the summer they have an array of beautiful plants which are displayed out front.

Pros: varity, large deli selection, vegan options

Cons: expensive, location

Home Sweet Home

This place is my health food haven! There is such a wide variety of produce that ranges from conventional, organic, local, or a combination of one or the other. There are aisles of snacks, sauces, alternative milks, etc( usually they have great deals on tinned organic tomatoes, you better bulk up on that lycopene goodness!). The coop stocks many items that can be consumed by those with food allergies/intolerances.(They have this beautiful gluten-free lavash that I must confess my love and addiction to!) There is an aisle with some raw food products in it, health and beauty section, and many nice eco-friendly, organic versions of items found in regular markets. Unfortunately, their hot bar isn't always vegan D: ; I've never tried their sandwiches, but they do know how to make a rootin-tootin soup! The co-op has expanded and they moved their bulk section to a different area in the store, they are also moving their store to a different location in the near future! Great vegan options, but you must pass through the macabre layer of meat and flesh to get to the bulk section. It can be pricey, but if you're a member and volunteer for a certain amount of hours you will get 26% off.

Pros: great selection, vegan friendly, knowledgeable staff

Cons: pricey

Not a bad little co-op

Met some really nice people. Store is small but has a pretty diverse selection of produce. Plenty of vegan options. Can't be sure on price as I am not from New York but compared to Colorado its high.

Pros: Selection, Vegan, Friendly

Cons: Price

If you come through again you'll see Honest Weight has moved to a huge new space - lots more vegan and gluten free options in the deli and hot bar always, and a nice cafe area to eat in if you are not taking out. They also have an expanded bulk section - expanded everything, really. People still nice too! Some prices have come down since the move, and sales & coupons are good too.
