Non-veg

Serves meat, vegan options available. The menu is separated into a vegetarian and non-vegetarian section, and the vegetarian items are all vegan suitable. Everything comes in sets, with the cheapest set at approx. 2100+ yen and the most expensive approx. 7500 yen. Expect a wait if you do not have a reservation. There is a crowded dining room downstairs and a quiet tatami room upstairs. Open Mon-Sun 11:00am-6:00pm.

5/5 So delicious

Great shojin ryori, one of the best we tried! Especially the eggplant was heavenly. High quality ingredients. Very much recommended! They have different sizes of shojin ryori menus to choose from, we had the smallest ones and it was definitely enough for lunch!

Pros: Delicious

YUMMY shojinryori

There are two set options for vegans. One is 2,000¥ and the other is 5,000¥. We went for lunch so we went for the 2,000 set which has less food than the more expensive one. This set was plenty of food IMO, it came with many dishes that were all delicious and vegan plus it came with two teas, a little glass of sake, and a soy dessert. The aubergine/eggplant dish called nasu dengaku that is in the middle is one of my fave Japanese foods so I really enjoyed this meal. I’m sure the larger more expensive meal is also great and would recommend it to anyone wanting to try good monks food. I personally think it’s worth the price for this special meal, you can’t get this kind of food anywhere. Plus it’s made up of so many tiny different dishes with various flavours and textures that I can only imagine takes TIME to prepare.

Pros: Clear vegan options, Great flavours, Lots of little dishes

Great food

Even at a low 2000 yen, the cheaper vegan set menu was delicious. If you enjoy -or want to discover- traditional Japanese cuisine, go for it!

Excellent traditional cuisine (Shojin Ryori)

Found this place thanks to Happy Cow
When we arrived we were asked to wait in line for a table; but were quickly seated at the only free table once I indicated, using Google Translate, that we had a reservation. As with most places in Japan their spoken English was rather rudimentary
Being the only vegan I chose the the vegetarian menu (Shojin Ryori) which in fact is vegan.
I opted for the second of the three set menus (5000 yen). Expensive compared to the set menus chosen by my family (2800 yen) but so worth it. The food was refined, tasty and plentiful. HIGHLY recommended. Definitely deserves five stars

Wonderful lunch!

I wish it was possible to give Hanabishi five stars because the food here is incredible. If you know you're coming, it's best to make a reservation; I showed up solo at open and was seated in 30 minutes, but it's possible I got lucky, since other people in line said this restaurant is famous. They have an English menu with a "vegetable only" section that is vegan, with a few set meals ranging from 2000 to 6000 yen. They also have some extra items on the a la carte menu that can be made vegan, like vegetable tempura and agedashi tofu, but it may be best to ask and clarify vegan when ordering these. The food can quickly get pricey, but the flavors are amazing and the portion sizes are reasonable, so I can't recommend it enough.

Pros: Delicious shojin ryori

Cons: On the expensive side
