No Longer All Veg

Guru's briefly attempted an all vegetarian/vegan menu but has recently changed hands and gone back to including meet.

Some of my old favorites at this restaurant are vegetable jal frezi, the daals, samosas, and rajma masala. The new menu has some different options. I especially enjoyed the vegetable Manchurian.

This is a very family friendly restaurant that is welcoming to all ages. The owners make everyone feel like family and are very active in supporting their local community and the international community.

No apology needed!

We were greeted with an apology that they didn't have meat. Of course we were there because of that fact! Ambiance is NICE restaurant, clean and pretty. (We all know some of our beloved places are a bit like dives). If you take a meat-eater you won't be mortified. Spice levels are solicited and can be specified. Labeling on the menu for vegan and gluten free are clear. The staff is happy be welcoming to all. We are thrilled to have another solid choice in our area.

Pros: Food and a bar! Wooo, Lovely decor. Quite upscale for vegetarians., Clearly and thoughtfully labeled menu

Go here now

I wish I could give this place 5*. The owner was so helpful with walking me thru the vegan options, which were plenty. The korma with tofu & veg was delicious. Lasooni Gobi was sooo freaking tasty. Proper comfort food. Masala mushrooms app so good. Sat at the bar and honestly felt like I was eating at a friend's house. Definitely stop by this place if you're in the area.

Favorite restaurant in Newtown!

Guru’s is a gem. They have many vegan options, including when they have buffet lunches. Note that their plain naan (without butter) is vegan! Just when I thought I couldn’t love this place any more I learned that I can eat their naan! They also special made us vegan rice pudding because there was no vegan dessert out at the buffet. If you aren’t sure or have questions about the menu - ask! The family that runs the restaurant is so nice and accommodating. I wish I could rate it 5 stars on here (only fully vegan/veg places can be rated 5 stars).

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Vegan options in lunch buffet, Can request a dish be made vegan

Great find

There are many vegetarian options that can be made vegan, and they’re all delicious! Our favorites are the Chole bhature and the Navratan Korma. Both of them are fantastic! The lasooni gobi is also great for an app or side. So happy we found this place!

Pros: Plenty of vegan options , Great service, Delicious food

fancy and delicious

this place really makes you feel like you’re going out to a fancy dinner, but it has a very casual atmosphere about it. the food is lovely, the staff is a kind family.
we went there kind of late, (hour and a half before closing) and they started to push us out the door by 930.
drinks are delicious and fair priced. would definitely go again.

Pros: good veg options , fair price

Cons: closes at 10, wants you out by 930

Guru's moved

The fantastic Indian gem in Newtown moved just down the street to the old Saloon. They now have a bar and serve beer, wine and cocktails. The food is always amazing but the new menu has been simplified with a lot of small side options. Of course eating vegan here is really easy as almost all the veg dishes are already vegan or can be ordered that way. As a vegan I can also bring my non-vegan family and friends and everyone loves the food. I give it 5 stars but HC only allows 4 stars.

Pros: The owners and staff are just so nice!!, Very Vegan friendly, There price and portions can't be beat.

Awesome Indian Restaurant w/ Lots of Vegan Options

Solid Indian food, very friendly staff, warm and cozy decor. I had the Chana Masala (chickpeas) and my wife had the Baignan Bharta (eggplant and peas). Delicious, savory, and spiced to our liking. We asked for “medium” heat. My favorite thing about the whole experience was that the hostess who sat us told me “if you see anything on the menu that isn’t vegan, just ask for it to prepared vegan — challenge our chef.” I truly love this attitude as oftentimes restaurants basically seem to think “you should be grateful that we have more than one vegan option on our menu.” Highly recommend this place. We will be back for sure.

Pros: Many vegan options, Menu calls our vegan options very clearly, Friendly staff
